Hey for some reason I never posted this here, and they've added a new AAA icon in an effort to try to trick me into watching AAA. Also realized with all the commisioner talk in this I failed to point out that the current Coliseo commisioner is Bello Greco. Bello Greco is the father of Super Calo and the Stone brothers but more importantly a really really great wrestler who worked an Exotico gimmick in the 70s and 80s. Well anyway he's now the commisioner and he comes out before and after the title match for the belt presentation and he looks exactly like current Pat Patterson. Really old heterosexual Mexican wrestler who used to work a homosexual heel gimmick looks almost identical to really old homosexual Canadian wrestler who used to work a heterosexual face gimmick.

PAS:Man alive on paper this looked like the worst CMLL show possible, one match amazingly exceeded expectations, one match lived right down to them

What Worked

TKG: Que Monito's Mistico cape was spectacular. I thought the deal with Amapola was that she was suposed to be too ugly to book after she lost her mask. EMLL must have great make up artists for their backstage segments as she looked way facially prettier than Marcela or Dark Angel. She could use some ProActiv I guess...although ummm. uh... not sure how to say this without coming off like some sort of Sweetseresque fan of Barely Legal movies but...the acne actually gives her an attractive young look.

PAS: We mentioned last week Hiroka was the worst wrestler wrestling on television. In previous trios matches she resembled when Russo made Nitro girls wrestle, and not even a Nitro girl who showed some promise, but whatever horseface Nitro girl who ended up bearding Micheals. Yet stick her in a singles match with Marcela, and somehow she has the best match since we have been doing this thing. This was built like a lucha title match, with a slow start and a big build to a super hot finish. There were parts where Hiroka looked off, but there was also sections where she would land nasty kicks and take big bumps. Marcela was amazing here, awesome near falls, big moves and great looking counters. This was as an impressive performance as I have seen in 2006.

TKG: Hiroka does bump for drop kicks really well and throws some stiff kicks (although she always looks like she looses her balance throwing them). Marcela’s three big moves: german, quebradora driller, and Michinoku Driver…are all really nasty big moves and paced well in the match. And that’s the real amazing thing about this match is stuff paced well. Yeah I was absolutely dreading this show. The thing about the match is how amazingly well this was laid out. I mean its Marcela vs. Hiroka in a one fall lucha title match…and well you have so many things that could keep this from being good: Hiroka sucks, it’s a one fall match which are hard to do (although one could argue that the luchadoras mostly do single caida matches…but this is high end “title match”as single caida so still) and it’s a title match in a current lucha environment where folks don’t do title matches all that well. Jose explained that “The deal was that title matches were regulated by a commission - a real sports commission - so you had to wrestle "for real". It was great - because you'd see a guy like Sangre Chicana, whose bread and butter obviously was wild and bloody brawls, compete in a title match, and he'd wrestle scientific style and be very good at it.” And so traditionally in lucha title matches were like Regal TV title matches (closest comparison I can make) in that it was all about the “wrestling”with none of the shortcuts. These days the commission isn’t watching the title matches as closely so instead of being worked as very scientific “wrestling”style they are often worked as a “workrate”match so you get lots of stuff, lots of elaborate double/triple teams…not “for real”. About the Flecha v. Stuka Jr match Phil wrote that” mask matches have enough built in drama, that they can take pedestrian wrestling to the next level.”. Lucha title matches don’t have that kind of inherent built in drama. And so the success or failure of title match is determined by the work. So yeah no reason to believe this would be any good and then it turns out to be pretty fucking great and laid out about as well as one could lay this kind of match out with me buying all the near falls and such. Best thing we’ve seen on GDR thus far.

What Didn't Work

PAS: I really can't think of more awful on paper Coliseo main event then Tarzan Boy/Ultimo Guerrerro and Olympico v. Mistico/Ultimo Dragon/Lizmark Jr., and this was as mailed in and bad as one might expect. With his red and black mask and Brady Anderson physique in is clear that Olympico is doing a East German Olympian gimmick. Mistico was mailing it in like this was his 4th show of the day. It is also pretty amusing to watch Lizmark Jr., who at one point was the king of all roid abusing heavyweights in lucha, now he looks less gassed then all of the rudos and arguably less gassed then Mistico.

TKG: Yikes! Their were parts of the third fall where Lizmark Jr went through his signature spots with some energy I guess. But Tarzan Boy didn't even do his "look at me I'm mailing it in "shtick. He just did nothing. Awful.

JUST SAY NO. We need to find an old school EMLL logo instead.

lucha title matches don’t have that kind of inherent built in drama. And so the success or failure of title match is determined by the work.

Lucha Title matches for a mostly fictional title even more so; I think there is inherent drama in Ultimo title defenses because he's held forever and done something with (possibly the same thing with Mistico/Warrior but that was more about the rivalary than the belt). But the CMLL Women's Title is a one they had a match for, and then sometimes Marcela remembers to bring it to the ring, and they got people caring about the finish like it meant something by the end.

So yeah no reason to believe this would be any good and then it turns out to be pretty fucking great and laid out about as well as one could lay this kind of match out with me buying all the near falls and such.

The one thing that stuck out badly for me is the middle->end of the match felt like a WWE layout; they had Hiroka work a bodypart for minutes, and then it was disregarded once the comeback started, like something straight out of a time killing match on Velocity.

I was somewhat bothered by that too. As really felt like a place where this match could have used multiple falls. hiroka winning first fall after arm work/Marcela recovering in second.

It didn't bother me too much as after all the arm wrenching in begining of match, Hiroka went out to taunt crowd for long enough that I bought time to recover and play possum for when hiroka got back in ring.

So true. I'd only look for the Vertebreaker to make an occasional appearence like the Tombstone.
