I've consistently seen arguments like this not just in this thread, but in other places wherein individuals express their displeasure with Bonds and his (okay, alleged) steroid use.

I don't understand exactly what any of it has to do with people being upset with Barry Bonds and steroids in baseball. If somebody presented the argument that this was the absolute worst thing that has EVER happened in the history of Major League Baseball, that'd be one thing. However, nobody here is making that argument, so any points about Howe, the Chicago Black Sox, Ty Cobb, or other past scandals you can throw out there is moot. I have my own personal opinion as to where it ranks in relation to specific scandals and wrongdoings in Major League Baseball, but I could be here awhile and I'll spare you all the lengthy rant.

I don't think this argument should be so much a question of who he is but exactly what he did. In a game where numbers are so important, and put in such high regard, you can bet that people are going to be upset when a player goes on the juice and then goes in the record books as having a higher number of career home runs than Babe Ruth, and is chasing after the number one slot currently held by Hammerin' Hank. Something like Ty Cobb fixing games doesn't negate from the importance of this issue.

I honestly don't care if he did or not...just show me the proof in the form of a positive test before we start slapping asterisks on everything.

He's breaking a record having played for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

That alone should wipe any asterisk away.

My whole opinion on this is who cares? It is not the record he will pass soon, it is second place. I have no intention of flipping to SC to watch his every at bat.

Barry is a jerk. Plain and simple. But even if he was a nice guy, it is still second place! When did it become the norm here to celebrate coming in second? This thread and discussion should be saved for if he comes close to Hammerin' Hank Aaron.

Of course, I think Barry retires this year. I think he passes the Babe and comes up short for hsi pursuit of aron, which I feel will be done on purpose. I think his plan all along was passing the Babe and leaving Baseball. And I for one will not miss him when he is gone.

Oh one thing is very clear as of late and that is he is not playing for anything but himself and the homers. Twice lately he has popped up and not even made a slight attempt to move toward first base. He doesn't seem to care at all about playing hard, just getting his hits. So I could honestly see him sticking around as long as they let him to slowly creep his way to the record. He's shown he is not above that sort of thing as it was (allegedly) his jealousy of Big Mac getting more repect that lead him to use steroids in the first place.

But let's not short change this. Yes it's second place but it's Babe Ruth. I mean come on now.

There was a hit very recently that any other player could've reached on when the pitcher tried to field a line and knocked off a pretty sloppy error. And there was good ol' Barry, barely jogging to first.

However, I argue that it's half him not caring about anything other than the Ruth Chase and half him being in horrific pain. The guy seems to wince when he blinks. Physically, he's broken down, and anyone like Skip Bayless who tells you he has two or more seasons left in him is out of his goddamn mind.

Emphasis mine. Really all that needs to be said to understand why second place in this instance is so important to people.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I love the "there was no rule against it" argument. Unless you count the actual FEDERAL STATUTES against steroids.

But, I guess baseballs rules are somehow ABOVE those of the United States.

Either way, Bonds is a prick. I wish Roger Clemens would come out of retiremet, and pop a 98 MPH fastball in his ear.

I'll counter that with this...

Although I wasn't there, I'm fairly certain Ruth drank during Prohibition, and I'm fairly certain he solicited prostitutes.

It's my understanding both of those things were/are illegal as well.

I could go on, but I haven't done enough research on those issues...

They also don't enhance your ability to hit a baseball a long long way. That's the difference.

People.....just please read it this time....

"In truth, steroids have been banned in baseball since 1991. A source provided a copy of the seven-page document to ESPN The Magazine on the condition of anonymity. Titled "Baseball's Drug Policy and Prevention Program," the memo was sent to all major-league clubs on June 7 of that year by then-commissioner Fay Vincent. He spelled out components of the program, and ordered, "This prohibition applies to all illegal drugs and controlled substances, including steroids."

On May 15, 1997, acting commissioner Bud Selig distributed a nearly identical version of the drug memo, again citing steroids and directing clubs to post the policy in clubhouses and distribute copies to players"

Then why hasn't Bonds been suspended for the years and years of steroid use??

I'm really happy you've read a book and everything, but could you please stop repeating yourself in this thread? FOUR posts was pushing it. You're now up to SEVEN.

(Bullitt, we're also painfully aware of YOUR opinion, so perhaps you could stop answering as well.)

Because while it was illegal, there was no testing for it. Much like a lot of laws passed by Congress, it was unenforcable, designed to make them look good without actually doing the tough work of actually testing for it.

Even though we don't like Bonds, I'm not disliking him enough to start throwing at him like Springer and others.

I'm also thinking people are not as pissed as Bonds as they would have you believe. During his last homerun in Philly he was widely cheered. People are just jumping on the anti-Bonds bandwagon now that it's trendy.

A good test of popularity will be to see if he gets voted into the Allstar game. While at Yankee stadium, I punched a chad for Carlos Lee, but I noticed most other people were clicking for Bonds. And these were AL/Yankee fans who would be voting in their own interest to see a weak NL team get beat for homefield.

Despite the public outcry, in private people want to see Bonds in the Allstar game.

But then you'd need someone else to plunk Clemens for being a surly steroid-user.

714.

Finally. Nine games and 29 at-bats without a homerun. Sheesh. At this rate, maybe he can catch Aaron by the time *I* turn 41.
