Looks like they're going for a Booker/Batista feud when Dave comes back...

From WWE.com:

"SmackDown Superstars Batista and Booker T got into a knockdown, drag-out fight Monday afternoon on the set of World Wrestling Entertainment’s SummerSlam commercial shoot in Encino, California. Director of WWE Television Promotions, John Gaburick, tells WWE.com the fight broke out during the filming of a scene in the commercial which will be used to promote SummerSlam later this year. “The fight lasted at least five minutes, it was a brutal, bloody, vicious affair,” says Gaburick. “It took JBL, Mark Henry, Chris Benoit, Finlay and road agent Ricky Steamboat to finally break things up.”

Gaburick says, “Both men were banged up pretty good, both men were bloodied up.” After the fight, Booker T and Batista went behind closed doors to try and clear the air. Gaburick says both Booker T and Batista finished their required work on the commercial before leaving the set. When asked what the fight was about, Gaburick would only say “it’s a personal issue between two men.”

The SummerSlam commercial was filmed Sunday using RAW Superstars and Monday using SmackDown competitors."

If this is true, I look forward tot he feud. Booker has been one of the few highlights on SD! the last few months, and they desperately need Dave back as soon as possible. That roster has been ravaged with injuries and other problems (Orton).

Hmmm ... interesting feud ... I wonder if this will match will be saved for Summerslam or it'll be one of the marquee matches at the Great American Bash in July.

I'm happy as long as Sharmell doesn't accuse Batista of rape.

Umm... I was just on the Torch site and they are implying that this thing is real. Here's what Wade Keller said (keep in mind that this is the same man that wrote an article about Steve Austin hurting his anti-authority character by endorsing the XFL and not being skeptical about the product):

- First reported through its mobile service Monday night, WWE.com reports that Booker T and Batista were involved in a fight at the Summerslam commercial shoot in California on Monday afternoon. They were on the set filming various shoots for the traditional "Summerslam-themed" video packages that will air in the weeks leading to the PPV on August 20.

The fight included blood and both men showed swelling later in the evening. Booker T's wife, Sharmell, became involved near the end of the fight, but not physically. Batista, who has not been traveling with the Smackdown roster while recovering from arm surgery, is expected to be back on TV by the Great American Bash in July.

More details on what led to the fight will be included in this week's Torch Newsletter.

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

I didnt wanna jump out and say "THIS ISNT A WORK!!!" right away like I always do (thus igniting the great "If it isnt on TV, can it really be a work?" debate), but I have a really hard time believing that WWE would use their website to work the fans like this.

It's pretty easy for them to mix storyline advancement with real news/interviews the way they are now, but to mix real news with fake news designed to start angles would do away with all of the work they've put into their website lately. I'm sure they're pretty tired of other sites breaking stories like this right under their noses, so they started reporting real stories like this one (releases, suspensions, injuries, etc) themselves. Faking us out with this "work" story just to start a storyline seems completely against what they're trying to do with their site.

Michael Cole took over the running of the site a few weeks back, and Meltz reported that they were returning it to a more storyline-adherent format once again. So despite the changes WWE started implementing last year, this has every chance of being a work.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Somehow the use of the phrase "knockdown, drag-out fight" makes me believe this is a work.

Also, the fact that it lasted five minutes. When's the last time you've seen an unplanned fight go longer than 30 seconds?

They wouldn't use the phrase 'knock-down, drag-out' or 'brutal, bloody, vicious affair' if it was real.

OK, now it gets stranger. From WWE.com

"It was simply about respect, that's all." Booker T, sporting a swollen left eye, commenting exclusively to WWE.com about the bloody and brutal fight he had with former World Heavyweight Champion Batista on the set of the SummerSlam commercial Monday in Encino, Calif. It took a number of SmackDown Superstars to pull Batista and Booker T off one another in a fight that lasted at least five minutes. "I'm not going to say anything else about it. The fight had to do with respect," says Booker.

"I have no ill will toward Dave, but I feel like he doesn't know the history of the business that's all. Maybe he should study the history. There's a lot of us who paved the way in this business for men like Batista," says Booker. "When I started, guys like Greg Gagne, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and countless others were in WCW. I walked in the locker room and had to earn their respect. It took me 16 long years, but I earned it. Respect isn't a right, it's a privilege."

When asked if the two men have buried the hatchet, Booker T pointedly says, "We'll never be friends. We'll never exchange Christmas cards. But I will work with Dave in the ring like nothing ever happened. It's not about us, it's about the company and more importantly it's about entertaining the fans. I'll never do anything to hurt our product."

WWE.com is attempting to reach Batista for more on this situation.

---

This doesn't sound like the build to a worked story.

Well, perhaps then a real-life happening that has been blown out of proportion? They seem to really be stressing this "at least five minutes" angle, which just doesn't make sense from any vantage point. Even if this was the rare "real" fight that went a long time, why would people wait THAT long to interfere? And why are they being interviewed about it, instead of suspended?

EDIT: Well okay, suspending Booker now would make Smackdown utterly unwatchable...

Keeping in mind the fact that Foley pretty much worked the angle between him and Edge (leading up to WM) in his 'blog' I would guess that most of this is a work as well.
If it didn't start out like one it became one the moment they reported it.

Hell, they turned the Edge-Lita-Hardy thing in one huge worked story..

These guys bump around the ring, and the fact that he has some cuts and scratches (or swelling or whatever) on his face makes you think it's real?

I'll amend the old saying to "If you see it on TV, or if they tell you about it, it's a work."

I didn't say on way or the other whether or not I thought it was real. However, Batista hasn't wrestled in 3 months.

Or it could be a make-up job.

Guess we'll never know.

From yesterday's Meltzer update (WrestlingObserver.com):

Originally posted by Tuesday update on WO website

Should also be noted that the headline for the update included "WWE Shoots Strange Angle." So apparently Meltzer's under the impression this is a work.

As am I. Especially making me skeptical:

Booker T's not necessarily a dumb guy, but he sure as Hell isn't that articulate. Also suspicious is the name-dropping of Greg Gagne, which has to be because he was just brought in as a road agent (I think). I mean really, would Booker T (or anyone in his/her right mind) really put Rambo in the same league with Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, and Arn Anderson? What, no love for Erik Watts? If it's not a work, at the very least those are NOT the words of Booker T.

Swollen eyes are easily done with stage make-up, and have been in the past in WWE. I'm sure the upper-lip scratch is easily done as well, and it doesn't surprise me that they're kayfabing at the premiere of "See No Evil" (since they've also turned the production of that movie into a kayfabe angle).

Oh, and if you're going to do an angle that's a pseudo-shoot and/or turn a real-life incident into an angle, then at least pretend to have some knowledge of what happens in a real fight. FIVE MINUTES?! What, were they filming the Summerslam commercial in an Octagon and an MMA bout broke out? Were the people waiting five minutes to pull them off each other John McCarthy and Herb Dean?
