After all these years of watchig wrestling why do I still fall for the hype of a great match when all I get is a bait and switch angle?

The Spirit Squad is still fun though

Edit: Oh yeah, Helmsley really looks smaller these days.

Deep metaphysical question: If Tommy Dreamer gets beat up anyplace outside of Philadelphia, does anyone actually care?
And, having someone turn on Tommy Dreamer is almost as cliche as someone turning on Sting.
Is Vince off thinking he is god and just back to Mr. McMahon?

He would have been better off turning on Joey Styles.

The opening segment was alright, but the best part was probably the standoff between RVD and Cena....Did Shelton not sell that diving dropkick by RVD on Shelton's pin attempt on Haas? Elsewise, the four-way was entertaining....I don't know what to say about the Kane segment, except, "they flew those actors in just to say the same stuff they said in the video package?"....

Looks like they're not turning Carltio a full-fledged face, which is a good idea, IMO. Match was okay....I guess Mick is siding with WWE. Interesting "match"....Another crazy chick added to the Mickie/Trish feud? I'm intrigued....The Big Show/Kane match was an interesting concept that didn't translate to a good match....The main event tag was better and longer than I expected.

Given that RAW was in Anaheim this week, I'm guessing it was more of a leisurely drive.

I watched Raw an hour & a half late due to hockey, and gave up after the fastest turn since Paul Ellering. Thanks for coming out, Tommy.

Some thoughts...

- I liked the Foley/Edge angle and turn on Dreamer. I was really hoping for an old-school backstage interview for Foley to go on a huge rant against ECW, everything it stands for, and why he did what he did. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll have to wait until next week.

- I understand they wanted to keep the ECW angle pertinent, but RVD cannot cut a serious promo to save his life.

- Kudos to the two enhancement guys who did the job for Umaga. They made him look like a million bucks.

- Man, did Jim Ross seem really bitter at times or what? I wonder if any of that's kayfabed, especially his mumbling and groaning when Lawler was making the usual comments about the women. I could see it being part of an angle, where he eventually comes out and outright states that Styles has a point...then again, I don't know quite where they'd go with it from there.

- Vince in small doses actually works. It's good to only have him appear in one segment on the show. Admittedly I flipped away a couple times, so maybe I just missed it, but his character is definitely a case of "less is more."

All in all, RAW was okay. Nothing too spectacular, but nothing offensive enough for me to complain.

Yes, and that's a good thing. A lot of his problems since returning from his quad injury a few years ago is from being too big. He's good enough that he doesn't need the Chris Masters, Lex Luger, or Hulk Hogan freakish muscles gimmick. And, a smaller HHH is still a very big man. Too bad Scott Steiner didn't have a wellness program to stop him from eliminating the good Scott Steiner several years ago.

I'm not very excited about the Mick Foley turn. Why would he suddenly join up with Edge. Also, why would the Edge character suddenly join up with Mick Foley. And, also, why are we supposed to care that they beat up a Tommy Dreamer that hasn't been on TV for such a long time, and even when he was on TV, he never meant anything in the WWE.

Also, why turn a part time worker (and that makes it sound like he works more than he does)? He's not around enough to tell a long term story. However, if anyone can pull something like that off, Mick might be the person to do so. It just seems to me that Mick would be a good spokesperson for the ECW product and someone that could add name value to the ECW shows and bring credibility to it on WWE's main show.

I'm guessing this leads to someone like Terry Funk, Sandman, or Sabu coming in to feud with Edge and Foley. Or, maybe Edge somehow wins the title from Cena (with help from Mick Foley) and RVD ends up feuding with Edge until using his Money in the Bank title shot vs. Edge at the ECW PPV with Mick Foley in Edge's corner.

The Kane storyline just keeps getting dumber and more boring to watch. Now, they are using kayfabe in the previews for that movie, which just makes the movie look more bush league. Then again, the movie will have to look better if compared to the terrible storyline on Raw.

What's the deal with the woman that stopped Mickie from attacking Trish? Mickie and this woman appeared to know each other. Will this be another member of Mickie's family that idolized Trish while watching the shows with Mickie's Pappy?

Jim Ross is back and in "mid-season form". He couldn't tell Maria and Mickie apart and he called the Spirit Squad member's attempted Swanton Bomb a Moonsault. Even with those mistakes, it's still good to hear JR on Raw again....and especially good to no longer have Coach cluttering the show.

I believe her name will be Nicky James.

The best part of the RVD speech was how the people who were going to chant ECW (and there weren't many of them) we're already doing it for him once he brought up Joey, but because he absolutely had to stick to script, he had to continue the long build to the letters, so no one cared any more by the time he was done.

Odd that Vince can instantly cut off Cena's mic, and yet Joey got to do that whole rant last week. Maybe he was busy with Candice and/or fixed things this week.

I can't really blame Mick for turning on Tommy Dreamer and beats him up - it looks so fun and easy, you can't help but want to do it yourself.

So if Foley/Edge/Dreamer was a "Classic ECW Style Triple Threat" is the match still going on?

I'm surprised that Vince isn't introducing her as Mickie's lesbian ex-girlfriend.

Not sure if that was a dead crowd tonite, or they just didn't have that much to cheer about.

Could the WWE gotten any further away from ECW country to do the Tommy Dreamer beat down ?

It's still playing on the West Coast, but thus far...

During the backstage Kane interview, the women couldn't even scream decently when Kane started "killing" that other guy. You know a horror movie's gonna suck if the female leads can't even scream right.

RVD's promo reminded me why I have a hard time buying into him. He's the Keanu Reeves of the WWE promo style. It's not even that he can't do a serious wrestling promo, because he cut an awesome one at One Night Stand. But when it's actually scripted, he has no idea what to do out there.

Mick Foley turning on Tommy Dreamer would mean more if the non-ECW crowd had a clue who he was. Anyone who missed One Night Stand last year would, at best, probably remember him as the guy who ate weird stuff and got his ass kicked a lot.

I figure it's because Dreamer, start to finish was essentially Mr. ECW. Also, if you need someone to show up, bleed like a sunuvabitch and then leave, he's your guy.

I'm sure next week we'll get an explanation for the turn that will make as much sense as (or at least, reference to) being lost in Cleveland. But if it's Foley and he looks like he believes it, I'll eat it up with a spoon and so will you.

Unless we get "I don't owe you fans an explanation!", which of course is French for, "Er, you caught us. We don't know why we did it either."

Foley would be a fun hardcore mentor for Edge, but then that basically leaves Lita with... I don't know, Conway?

Actually, I'm pretty sure that this is the angle Mick was aluding to a few weeks ago in "Foley Is Blog" that he was trying to sell to Vince, and if that's the case, I don't think Foley would do something like this without knowing ahead of time what he was trying to set up.

Yeah, Foley's got something up his sleeve here. This is the guy who made sense out of "Foley Is A Coward" in 2004, after all.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Was checking out the girl in question. She is Beth Phoenix (real name Elizabeth Carolan) from OVW. She appeared as in one of The Heart Throbs girls kissing segments a few months back.

Depending what you want to read, she is married to wrestler Joey Carolan, although OVW's site was listing her as the girlfriend of Chris Masters. It may be an out of date page by now.

It also says she's the cousin of Brent Albright (Gunner Scott).

Interestingly she has degrees in criminal justice and public relations.

The ex-girlfriend angle is possibly off the mark. I would guess she would be billed as Mickie's sister, if the Nicky James thing is true.

However, would they have another Nicky ? - The Spirit Squad already have one. I'm sure WWE don't like having many wrestlers with the same name.

Yeah, doing a big ECW angle in friggin' Anaheim was a mistake. That's about as far from ECW territory as you can get. Did ECW even air out there before its subpar TNN run?

All the same, I liked the Foley stuff. I said just last week that I wasn't interested in Foley anymore because he was getting stale. Obviously, somebody over there -- Foley himself? -- agreed with me. Heel Foley is pretty awesome and something we haven't seen in a long time.

My love for the Spirit Squad increases every week. They're really coming into their own, and I think I can identify them all now (though I still have a little trouble with Johnny vs. Nicky). I think Kenny, though oddly not portrayed as the "leader" (which I'd heard was the original plan), is becoming the real star of the group. He's a fine wrestler, and more importantly, he's got a certain charisma in there that's tough to come by, especially at his age. I also like that he's got this distinctive, unusual-but-not-implausible physique for a wrestler. So many of these OVW guys come up with the exact same brick-shithouse build. How old was Randy Orton when he won the world championship? Twenty-four? If Kenny is really 20, I'm guessing at this point that he's almost guaranteed to break that record.

God I can't wait for "that date" to get here so "this shit" with Kane will end. Although I have to admit, his movie doesn't look half bad. By that, I mean I might check it out when it comes to HBO. How long was that opening segment? And did it even accomplish anything, besides making HHH and Cena look like idiots? I will give Mick a chance to explain next week, but the whole Tommy thing could not have been more shoe horned in there. He really should have been on last week to set that up. If they tweaked Umaga a little more, and made him more of a bad ass (like Samoa Joe), instead of some 80's throwback, the gimmick might work. I think calling Cena "the most controversial champion of all time" while he was in the ring with HBK was stupid. Wasn't Shawn involved in some controversial title match once?
