The W - One Question... - What movie was highly reccomended by your friends that you just don't care for? (Page 2) This thread has 8 referrals leading to it
Although it did first stoke my intense hatred for Oliver Stone.

Now don't get me wrong, it was ok, but I didn't think it was as great as everyone made it seem to be.
I was okay with Batman Begins. It got the film series back on track after the Clooney garbage.
The director, Christopher Nolan, I think is a bit overrated and two of his films that were recommended to me, Insomnia and Momento, were just boring and confusing. I mentioned this in another thread.
I'm no scholar, but I wouldn't be putting myself down either by saying I don't know what the hell happened in Momento a.k.a. "that film that is told in reverse order, so the last scene is the first and the first scene is the last, with this subplot about this guy who suffers from the same condition as the protagonist, who is seeking revenge on the guys who killed his wife and left him with such a horrible condition". Get it? Yeah...
Insomnia was different, but I couldn't stay awake. Robin Williams was weird. Al Pacino was weird. Hillary Swank was weird. It was all just wierd. It's just a good thing she didn't die in this movie because any movie she dies, she gets an Oscar out of... I'd hate for people to think that this film was THAT good. It sinply wasn't.

Spoilers for Momento

Simply put, the main character (Leonard?) is the guy in the subplot. He accidentally killed his wife and then to deal with it made up a story that, thanks to his condition, he wouldn't remember was false. The entire revenge plot is a great big red herring.
The kid is all confused and thinks to himself "I'm not calling anyone mommy because the last time I did that, it led to this." -My Wife on adoption
You know what movie bugged me, but geez, I can't remember the name of it now - it was the one where the guy had no short-term memory so he had to rely on notes and tattoos and it was all backwards? Anybody else remember that one?

What's this on my hand...?

Lest anyone take Zundian's words as gospel, there are many other interpretations of this film and Leonard's plight. There is the "Leonard IS Sammy" theory, the "Teddy is lying" theory, the "story is presenting it to us straight and fucking with our heads and providing visual and contextual red herrings as a means to question the audience's culpability regarding the truth" theory, and the "Leonard is batshit insane" theory.
Just so we don't all accept one possibility. I'm actually working on my senior revenge tragedy course term paper on this film right now (due Friday).
And, in an effort not to derail the thread, I saw Dodgeball. Nothing aside from "Fuckin' Chuck Norris" was remotely funny. Ben Stiller = Supremely not funny

Awwww, come on...the money chest at the end was actually labeled the "Deux Ex Machina" box, that had to be good for a laugh at least!

That's my point! At the end, I was asking myself questions of the possibilities of everything you raised. There was no clear cut answer and that troubled me a bit. I "just didn't care for it".
On the other hand, I liked Dodgeball.:)
"Those who make mistakes blame themselves and close their hearts. It's impossible to fix the mistake; men can't return to the past. That's why they drink. Lushes, drunks, sliding alcohol down their throats to try to dilute the memories that can't be forgotten. Frank Marlon, the gunsmith, does nothing but drink, and questions the glass after it's empty. "Am I wrong? Was I wrong?"."
Sideways. Everybody talked about how great it was and it just didn't do it for me. It was good, for the most part, but I thought it was a little overbearing on the "bad stuff happens to Miles" thing.

The actor's commentary track is hilarious. The two guys mercilessly mock each other (and Virginia Madsen's chest) the entire time. It might change your perception of the film.

I had a great friend of mine tell me that Eyes Wide Shut would be one of Kubrick's greatest film before it was released. He had a buddy who was one of the supporting actors in it, who told him quite a bit about Kubrick while it was in production and raved about working for him and the project in general.
This was the second most excruciating film-going experience I've ever had behind The Thin Red Line (which was beyond awful with it's 9th grade level existentialism).

Proving our often similar tastes, this is one of the few films I have ever walked out on - and even though I felt sure there would be more exposed female flesh in it. Pointless, unsexy and predicatable.
and yes, I was told it was awesome....
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

More like Eyes Wide SUCK!
I was fascinated the first time I saw it...for about 45 seconds or so. I really wanted to be aroused and titillated and scandalized and moved to awe of Kubrick's genius...but instead it just felt like I was watching the work of someone who never was told "No" anymore but instead just told what a genius he was. Kind of like a certain wrestling promoter we all know...
I know this is one that is not going to exactly stun people, but after years and years of avoiding it I tried watching Titanic. And now I am even more confused as to how the hell that became the biggest movie of all time.

Hey I steal gags whole cloth from MST3k too, where's my development deal with Paramount?
