This article (http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002425363) lists most of the highlights. Man, I love Colbert. That takes some balls.

WOW. Colbert is my new favorite person in the world, at least for the rest of the day.

I enjoyed watching this on CSPAN, and give the guy a lot of credit for having the cajones to stick to his style. From what I've been reading, the room wasn't all that thrilled with him, especially compared to the President's self-deprecating bits. Then again, he was hitting pretty hard and pretty close to home.

Don't care much for the site, but it did provide video of the speech.

From CrooksandLiars.com:
EDIT: Apparently the video's aren't available through a direct link outside of the site. But here's the article where they're posted (Crooksandliars.com).

I think it was pretty interesting to see how the crowd reacted. You could tell somebody heard that Colbert does a "pro-Bush comedy show", and decided that he would be cool to have on the "roast". Obviously this person was out of touch with the fact that Colbert's show really isn't pro-Bush at all, and they miss the actual message of the Colbert Report. It was hilarious for me to see this kind of verbal beating. Colbert Report works because his audience is anti-Bush. Here, these guys were obviously lost on many of the jokes.

Also, I'm not one to get offended easily, but did anybody else get a weird feeling watching parts of this "roast" that kind of make jokes about Iraq, global warming, the stupidity of the President, etc....? You can joke about shit like how Courtney Love is a crackhead or that Pamela Anderson fucked 1000 guys, cause it's funny and inconsequential. You can watch it and say "ahhh those were some good times". It's kind of weird seeing a bunch of elite fucks sitting there laughing the same exact way at a "hey we don't know what to do with Iraq and people are dying....ah that's a good one!" as they would at a "Hey, remember the 80's?" Tommy Lee roast joke. There's people dying over there, it seems pretty....weird...seeing the President chuckle over guest speakers' "you are screwing shit up" jokes.

You.....are extremely unclear on the concept of who books the speakers at the White House Correspondents Association's (whca.net) dinner.

By the way, you may not have heard about this, but they had one of these LAST year, too - W's "Nope - no weapons here" sketch was hilarious and would probably send you into a lather.

Still surprised at the reaction. Maybe it's just uptight political expert people who don't get Colbert's humor? Eh, either way...didn't quite impress the way it does his younger "hip" crowd. I don't usually see Colbert's jokes get that kind of silent treatment (with few bright spots).

Me, myself...I don't get really "offended"....but I just think of a family who lost their son or daughter who went over there bravely to Iraq...and then turning this on and seeing the jokes about it to a laughing President Bush. Pretty much, I guess I'm just saying if *I* was the President....I probably wouldn't make that much of an effort to show I appreciate a good ol' "You fucked up Iraq" joke. Still may be funny, but I'd keep that kind of on the DL.

Clearly, they aren't viewers. A quck scan of Zap2it.com's cable ratings for last week does not place either The Daily Show or the Colbert Report in the top 20 on Cable TV, which means that no more than 3.5 million people could be watching it. I poked around briefly looking for its ratings and have seen no references - like I said, I did it briefly.

But let's guess 3 million views, although I supect it is much, much less (as a comparision, Leno's numbers are about double that). What are the chances many (most) of the people in the crowd had never heard Colbert? High, I'd say. Like me: I know about him, of course. I have seen some brief segments, but don't watch the Report, or for that matter, the Daily show. His style might surprise me.

Previous guests at the correspondents' dinner have included Jay leno in 2004, Ray Charles, Ray Romano, and Bob Hope. So controversial comedy might not be their thing.

I have said this in the past (use the search and you can look it up). The press guys aren't all that smart - they probably just didn't "get" the jokes.

"High School Musical" is on the Top 20, and I'm willing to bet a good number of the people in that room haven't heard of that, either.

"The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" both air daily from Monday through Thursday. That puts them (and other shows aimed at an older demographic that air four or five different episodes a week) at a disadvantage in terms of ratings for specific shows. For example: 2 million watch an episode one night, and then another 1.5 million watch a different episode at some point during the week when the other 2 million aren't watching. However, it wouldn't show up in the Top 20 ratings as having 3.5 million viewers during the week, since those ratings track individual episodes.

That's not to say it definitely has 3.5 million people who watch it on any given week, but I think that's why shows like that can be as well-known and watched by a good number of people but not crack the Top 20.

Hmmm... Spongebob Squarepants made it 4 times. Now, if they can make it, why can't Jon and Stephen?

Oh, yeah... Spongebob is funny.

Oh well, that's why they have different shows, for different folks.

I'd expect that they invited Colbert thinking that he would mock the media more than Bush. I don't know how much of the event aired in the video linked above, but the host for the evening mentioned how he was came to know Colbert through the 'truthiness' flap, since he works for the AP. It is possible they weren't expecting him to go after the President so relentlessly, but as the moderator warned during his introduction, "No one is safe."

As for the ratings, I can see Colbert getting less than 3 million viewers per night, but I don't know if you can equate him to Spongebob. For starters, Spongebob is on much earlier in the evening, when more eyes are watching tv. Second, Comedy Central replays the Daily Show and Colbert about four or five times a day, so unless they are aggregating the replays into the ratings, he could be getting as many as 15 million viewers for each episode and not make that list. Plus, I don't think the Daily Show or Colbert count as 'appointment television'. Its not inconcievable that some people will watch it when the happen to catch it (myself included), and thus, while his ratings may not crack the top 20, that isn't indicative of the size of his fanbase/viewership. Then again, I don't know how much of the same can apply to Spongebob.

Part of the problem in all of this is that tv/entertainment is becoming so fragmented, its hard to know how many viewers qualify something as a 'hit' or even a household name. Colbert may be getting a lot of buzz lately, and those of us on the board may be familiar with him, but that doesn't mean that he's really stepping out from his base demographic, and while Comedy Central may be regarding the show as a hit, it doesn't mean that the numbers are really all that big. It could just mean they are big for Comedy Central.

As for Colbert's performance itself, well, he clearly has balls as big as he tends to describe while in character. To be able to look directly at the President while mocking him like that during his speech... that's impressive. I don't know how insular Bush is, as far as ignoring criticism's levied at him, but at least we know he's heard it. It was also interesting to see the President make fun of himself with his doppleganger (and particularly focus on his simple nature and percieved lack of intellect), and then not be able to withstand the real shots directed his way. Colbert clearly struck a nerve with him, and that's certainly not a bad thing.

That was my point, though you probably made it much clearer than I did.

As for Spongebob...I have four nieces and they watch cartoons, particularly the Nick ones, ad nauseum (even the same episodes) during the day.

It's also worth noting that all instances of "Spongebob" and "Oddparents" appearing on Cable's Top 20 are in the 9-11am Saturday & Sunday block of programming, so maybe this is when they air the new episodes (rather than the reruns they show during the week)? Not sure.

By the way, link to Cable's Top 20 (Zap2it.com) so you guys know what we're talking about.

I've always felt that a major misconception of Bush was that he ignores criticism, or that his staff tries to prevent him from hearing it as many of my liberal (moreso than I am which is a bit much) friends would suggest. I'm sure despite the fact that he claims not to read the paper that he's fully aware of the criticism, but doesn't allow it to impede any of the decisions he or others in his Administration makes. More fitting with his self-described role as "the Decider."

Either that, or they take themselves way too seriously, which I wouldn't find too surprising either.

The press is like our political parties. I loathe much of what the Republican party stands for. However, I don't confuse it with what Joe and Jane Republican think and am easily able to respect their beliefs.

The press is the same way, don't confuse the "press", i.e. the big boys, with the press. Most have a pretty good sense of humor and don't take themselves too seriously. And they have very thick skins because the people are just a phone call or e-mail away. Don't confuse those pompus asses with the networks with the average journalist.

And please don't confuse me, a traditional liberal Democrat, with the asses in charge of the Democrat party.

The majority of The Daily Show and Colbert Report's viewers are a mostly college-age audience. A lot of their viewers don't get counted in ratings systems because they either live in dorms (The Neilson system doesn't put boxes in dorm rooms so no viewers are counted) or else people are downloading the show.

I have no idea how many people are watching the show, but no one really does. It is safe to say that they type of people normally at this type of dinner are NOT the type that watch either show.
