What is that one movie that all your friends just love that you don't see it is that big a deal?
Mine is "Tombstone". All my friends love it. I thought it was OK but nothing spectacular.

Wow. When I saw the commercials I thought to myself, "That is the stupidest thing I've ever seen advertised." I refused to see it in the theaters. I took no notice of it when it came out on DVD. Finally though, after hearing from multiple people at work how *FUNNY* it is, I decided to pay $2 and rent it.
This would be good time to tell everyone that their first instinct about a movie is usually right for them.
I watched the whole thing. I can't believe I watched the whole thing. When the credits rolled, I was pretty sure that I was stupiderer than before I watched it. THAT was painful to watch.
Strangely enough, I did like Dumb & Dumber, which a lot of my friends compared to ND. I just don't see the resemblance.
I wasn't sure what happened. Then I saw the train stopping up ahead. I thought, ‘Holy crap dude, you just got hit by a train.'

There really aren't any at all, IMO. The two movies go for completely different types of laugh (silly and awkward). I always tell people that it's one of those quirky movies that you will either really love or absolutely hate, and there's really no telling which way it'll go.
The one movie that my friends always seemed to love (and still do to this day) that I absolutely loathed was Adam Sandler's "The Water Boy." I didn't find a single moment of it funny in any sense of the word. Ditto for the vast majority of Adam Sandler films, actually.

Blair Witch Project. I'll give that is was original, but being original doesn't necessarily mean being great.
"Speaking of Thomases, I loved your recent Atrocious GM Summit column, although I think that you flatter Isiah Thomas far too much by suggesting that he is merely one of a number of atrocious GMs. The truth is that Rob Babcock and Billy King are Einstein next to him. The mess he is creating right now in New York will be studied by business school students 50 years from now alongside Enron and pets.com."
We still argue over that. For me, it's just a popcorn movie, but they argue that it won an Oscar. And then I say that the one actor who deserved it (Joaquin as the emperor) didn't get it.

I agree with you on "Gladiator". We watched it with some friends on DVD and at the end I was very underwhelmed. My friend said it was the ultimate macho movie and I was insane for night liking it. Umm OK...

Many of you likely wont remember this one, but "Out of Africa." Everyone said it was great. It was a great 2 hour nap. Also the New Narnina movie, eh. I blame that recommendation on my wife and daughter.
This one's incredibly easy, Starship Troopers. Several of my film studies friends in grad school absolutely loved it and thought it was a great movie. I thought it was absolute dreck and a bastardization of a really good book. As I recall, I used the line "Verhoeven's Starship Troopers - based on the back cover of a novel by Robert A. Heinlein" as my sig for a long time. I also used the movie as the basis for a really good paper on how not to do an adaptation in one of my film studies classes as well as part of a larger project involving science fiction and film. It's kind of funny, but I've written more about that movie than anything else by an order of magnitude (we're talking hundreds of pages of academic prose) and I absolutely hate the movie and can't believe I paid good money to see it.

An early girlfriend of mine insisted we see it and my response was about the same as yours. She loved it and I came out refreshed and single.

I totally agree about Napoleon Dynamite. I just don't see what everyone else sees in it.
I also have to bring up The Shawshank Redemption. I know everyone tends to say that it's the greatest movie ever made, but it's just really not something I can take too much interest in.
All I ever heard was how great the critics and my friends thought "Election" was. Well, I watched it multiple times, and I still find it cliched and boring.
I also agree with the sentiments about "Gladiator" being a popcorn movie more than an Oscar-worthy film. I was more emotionally invested in "Air Force One" than "Gladiator."
I just saw The Big Lebowski last weekend. Well, I started watching it and fell asleep. Then watched the end again and fought to stay awake.
It was funny in parts but the rest was tiring.
