Just a quick thought, but even with the announcers commenting on the urine test being ruined ... didn't the doctor dip the testing strip in before Shawn took the cup? I remember seeing him shaking it (the strip!!) and looking at it before the brouhaha. I wouldn't be too surprised to see the drug test pop back up again.

After Verne shut it down, does it count the same? I mean, Ric was the NWA heavyweight champ - is that the same as whatever is in TNA right now?

I'd say no. So that pretty much would make Lawler the last champ. Zbyszko and Saito we after the AWA under Verne had pretty much broke up. Well, I dunno now. Larry Legend apparently fought the Almighty Heat Machine for the title at least once during that period.

Oh, right now, it's Shinjiro Ohtani, who you may remember, beat Benoit for the WCW cruiser championship way back in '96.

Coach has really gotten worse. You almost get the vibe that he really doesn't like Joey Styles and is trying to sandbag him. Did you notice after VM announced JR was coming back, and Coach slapped Joey on the back and said 'nice knowing ya kid, cup of coffee.'
That was so out of character for the 'Coach' character. He's supposed to despise JR. I noticed several other times when they were talking over each other. Clearly, there's some serious problems and is going to need to be addressed because if the commentating is that bad at Mania even a disinterested Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn will flip out.

The show was okay, seemed like there was some serious pacing problems with the commercial breaks and the main event being rushed.

Trish Stratus had maybe the line of the year with the 'sorry to interrupt your workout...in the middle of the hallway.' That's how a character stays relevant, you have to no-sell the absurd.

Not really a shock that Mickie James is behind the attack on Mrs. Kidman. I'm glad that they're not ditching that storyline, I thought after Ashley went out and with the Mitchell Playboy spread, that James would get lost in the shuffle. This has really been a pretty fun storyline and James winning the belt at WM will be a great moment.

Say what you will about the McMahon v. Michaels stuff, but it's getting crowd heat. I think the Mania match won't be atrocious, though it's not the best use of Michaels.

I liked the HHH v. Cena stuff and hey, Cena wasn't booed (much).

WM is looking up.

Verne was still running it for the Zybszko winning the belt over Tom Zenk in the battle royale and flip-flop with Saito, so I would count them. Lawler was stripped in January '89 and the company ground to a halt after the Team Challegne Series in the summer of '90 when Slaughter jumped ship after his disputed win over Zybszko for the AWA Title. Now, if the theory is the belt lost its viability after Lawler was stripped post-Von Erich unification bout, then it could also be argued that the belt really became devalued when Earthquake Ferris raised Nick Bockwinkle's hand in June '86 and awarded him the AWA Title via forfeit from Stan Hansen. Under that scenario, Lawler's title reign is meaningless also, as he won it from Hennig who won it from Bockwinkle. Of course, if you want to go further, when Verne won the AWA Title in his retirement match from Bockwinkle and the belt reverted to Bockwinkle, that would break the lineage.

I got the exact same feeling, Coach seems like he's going out of his way to either make Joey look bad or to incessantly yammer over Joey's lines. He was pretty talkative during his brief stint with JR and King, but it's really become distracting now, as he's not allowing the play-by-play annoucer to do his job.

Of course, ultimately, if Vince wanted him to shut up, I'm sure he would.

I have no idea why they insist on having Coach in the booth. It destroys the announcing dynamic, and it's a waste of the guy himself. He'd make an excellent cornerman-cum-mouthpiece for a new tag team, and King and Joey could get on with their jobs unhindered. Coach is most definitely the problem-the other two, when left to their own devices as they have been in the past, have proven to be a fairly strong duo.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

I know I'm the minority opinion, but I don't even think Coach is a bad announcer, per say. I do agree that Coach talks over Joey way more than he ought to be allowed to. I don't know if he thinks he's making the booth more interesting or if he really is trying to sabotage Joey, but it just wrecks the announcing.

I think The Coach character is fine, and he's had some fun segments over the years (especially during the Bischoff days), but he's gone way over the top as an announcer. That's the problem when announcers become characters, Coach seems like he's more interested in getting himself over.

I mean, give him an interview segment on the show or something, have him manage the Spirit Squad, but get him out of the booth.

I can't remember who pointed it out (think it was a columnist on Pulse) but the last few months have seen Lawler have to go total babyface to counteract the over-the-top heelishness of Coach.

That's caused his work to go down as well. The King sounds seriously bored out there most of the time.

I mean, I'm no great fan of Joey, but this is a guy that made his mark as a solo announcer and now has to compete for airtime.

It says something about Raw, when the most interesting part of the show is dissecting the announcing.
