Puckett in critical condition after stroke, surgery (ESPN.com)

Sounds like it could be worse, but man, only 44-years-old. I'd forgotten how (relatively) young he was when he retired.

Here's hoping he pulls through.

Not to derail this, but the quote at the end about his weight worries me for Tony Gwynn. Tony was big while he was ending his career, and he's no small guy now. I hope Tony can avoid these problems, and that Kirby can pull through OK.

While I'm sure the excess weight didn't help, don't forget that Puckett suffered pretty severe head trauma a few years when he got beaned by El Presidente. I wonder if that contributed.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I'm sure if anyone can bounce back from this, it's him.

From WCCO.com
Kirby Puckett was expected to be taken off life support sometime Monday evening, two sources have told WCCO-TV's Mark Rosen.

It's good to see that the WWE isn't backing away from Batista or Cena. There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. The longer Triple H stays away is also a plus...

Wow. The last thing I expected when watching a game show on TV was for the Minnesota news to interupt and announce that Kirby Puckett has died. I grew up following the Twins and worshipped Puckett since I was 9 years old. With Puckett's time over, I am just glad I was able to see him play in person and watch him hit the game-winning home run in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series.

Take the plunge. Step into liquid.

RIP Kirby...

I had a small smile on my face though...I remembered playing an old NES baseball game...it had Kirby in it and I could always count on him to crush it out of the park.

You wanted the best, you got... Out of Context Quote of the Week.

"I know, I know you are saying "sure there was some bad calls, but Jake Gyllenhaal obviously dropped too many easy catches and Ang Lee had some horrible clock management at the end of each half!"" (krakken2000)

Ever since he had the stroke, I've been seeing people going on about how "it's probably just a Minnesota thing, but..." No, it isn't. Every team should have someone who plays with that energy and enthusiasm for the game, and you don't have to be a Twins fan to appreciate that. Vaya con dios, Kirb.

I didn't find out until about a half an hour ago that he had passed away. Too focused on getting 24 downloaded and watched to pay any attention to the news.

Now I may not be able to sleep through the crying.

My favorite player of the 80's. Hopefully he is remembered as the great player he was, and not for his pff the filed problems after he retired.

I loved Kirby Puckett while he played the game, he was such a great hitter and did so much with his dumpy little frame. He was also from my hometown, so he was a personal favorite of mine.

His "off the field problems" however, were particularly nasty and extended beyond just the sexual assault in 2003. In the interest in not pissing on a man's grave though, there is no need to go further.

I, too, hope he is remembered for what a great player he was, but too often people do overlook their heroes off the field "problems"

Well, the thing is, that's part of who he was. And if you simply gloss over it, then you're actually doing a disservice by not remembering the total package.

Look, I'm not saying that we should all sit around and say "Boy, that Kirby Puckett was an asshole." But you can't just throw out anything that you don't like about someone just because they had some skeletons in the closet.

just heard great stat from Tigers/Giants game - 3 hour rain delay meant temp went from 97 at game time to 75 when game restarted. Also, the Giants had Zito come back out and pitch after the 3 hour rain delay.
