I thought people like me, AWArulz and dunkndollaz were the only ones old enough to remember those olden golden fish Fridays.
That's why I got to go to St. Mark's on Friday. It was right across from my Dad's bar on Ridge Road in Gary. The bus would drop me off about 4Pm, I'd go in an play bumper pool until about 6, then Dad would give me $4 to go to St Marks for fish - that's $2 for me and $2 for takeout for him. If my Gramps was in that night, I'd bring take out for him too. Every friday.
And that was back in the day when the Nuns were really "nunny" looking and didn't just look like normal women like they often do today.
St Marks had a really cool playground - much better than my school's - Monkeybars, slides, swings and that merry-go-round deal, so I would usually go out there with the other kids who were at the fish-fry for awhile.
For $2, you got two pieces of fish (in the takeout - if you were sitting there, they'd bring you all you wanted), cole slaw and fries. Drinks were extra and St. Mark's had a beer garden every Friday out in the parking lot where most people ate. Then they went over to my Dad's place. (cause we had Bingo at 8PM - it was a Legion hall).
Man, Pieman, those are good memories... thanks for triggering that....
Oh - and don't forget about Dr. Dirt and Too-old-now - they're also "ancients".

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.
Yes, I'm only twenty one. My father used to remind me of that fact when I was younger.
Interestingly fish was allowed because in the Middle Ages, most of the population was dependant on the fish in their diet. Meat was expensive and nobles often had exclusive hunting rights on their lands (Which really ticked off the peons who had to volunteer time to help the nobles go hunting and was one of the first "privileges" given up just before the French Revolution). The fish was eaten by the nobles because it brought them down to having the same type of diet as their subjects(although I'm sure their fish and greens tasted much better).

Huh. My Daddy always told me Catholics ate fish on Friday because the Pope had a big fishing fleet. Daddies never lie to kids do they?

My first econ professor mentioned something similar to AWA's version - with the "twist" that the Italian fishing economy was in a slump and the Pope used his political clout to increase their business.
I'm somewhere between Shep and AWA (though closer to AWA) on the age spectrum and I remember being told about the "every Friday" rule, but don't actually remember living it.
University of Kentucky basketball isn't a matter of life and death, it's much more important than that.
Abstaining from meat on Fridays (fasting on Fridays as a whole for that matter) actually has been around for a very long time. "Very" meaning since the early Church.
Abstinence from certain meat dates back to at least 1200 B.C. Some kid named Moses wrote about it apparently.
Clement of Alexandria said something about it in the 3rd century.
St. Thomas, in the 13th century, also spoke of it.
Pope Paul VI wrote a rather large chunk about it Click Here (vatican.va) to see what he says.
Also, Canon Law speaks of it as well.

Giving up fast food for Lent...but breaking news sending me all over Wisconsin means I just end up eating gas-station food. So much for health benefits.
I try the ol' fish-on-Friday routine every Lent...and at least once a Lenten season, I forget, and then am mad at myself the rest of the day.
Didn't make Ash Wednesday; pre-work oil change took 1 1/2 hours. The heck!?

Yes, I remember the fish rule every Friday. I remember when it changed to apply to Lent only. I heard an uncle talking about how another uncle (who had died pre-rule change), was languishing in Hell still on the "meat rap" and wondering if now he gets out, does the rule change apply retroactively. My aunts reminded him there were many other sins he still had to atone for.
I'll give up what the doctor told me a couple of months back - no sugar. I have been sort-of doing this and only have had a few cheats, but I'll make a more serious effort now.
I had a roommate in college who didn't call himself a "CEO" catholic, but an A&P catholic - Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday - the 2 days you go when you get something.
I gave up caffeine this year (2010), and it seems to be going fine so far. A possible side effect, there are so, so many people I want to punch in the face right now. However that may be the fault of the people who need face punched, and not the lack of caffeine.
Though I did yell at my dog for the first time, so it may be the caffeine withdrawal.

Instead of giving something up, I'm going to church every week. Trying to get back into the groove again, as church fell by the wayside when I went back to grad school.

I'm not either but many Christian demoninations pactice along these lines.
Growing up, our town had a K-8 Catholic school and the kids rode with us and just got transferred to their school. We were always jealous of them and our Jewish classmates for all the extra times they got off that we didn't. Ash Wednesday, we wanted to know why we didn't smear ashes on our forehead like the Catholic kids.
I should but haven't given't up anything for Lent. It's a good exercise Christian or not.
I've given up meat for Lent, because it's a pain to remember all the meat rules. (In reality, it isn't that hard - but Fridays kind of sneak up on you and then you've blown it all to hell.)

I used to make the "giving up observing Lent for Lent" joke years ago, but since I haven't really considered myself a practicing anything, it's not worth the effort any more.

I'm a Catholic that respects the higher power but I don't really follow the church itself, so take that for what you will. But for the first time in a very long time, I'm doing something for Lent by not drinking any soda or carbonated drinks, which I have become addicted to in recent years. It's only been a week so far, but already I have several people saying I've looked like I have lost weight, so the positive effects may be kicking in already.
On a side note, does anyone else have difficulty with the 'no meat on fridays' rule? Working in a restaurant especially, I'll go and grab a quick bite to eat since I don't usually have time for a full break and then groan in frustation because I didn't realize until later I wasn't supposed to eat that piece of bacon or sausage that day.
