You wanted the best, you got... Out of Context Quote of the Week.

"Because personally if I was being choked by Ric Flair, my personal reaction would be well, "Glrrrrkkk, can't breathe" but after that... "Man, I'm being choked out by Ric Flair, this is so cool." and then some more "Gllllrrrrk, can't breathe."" (Llakor)

Roll call: who's fought a speeding ticket?

I just got one, and the speeding's not up for debate. What is questionable, though, is I was in the left lane when I got pulled over, so I pulled over to the left. Didn't think it would make a difference, or that it made sense to cross three lanes to pull over on the right. Turns out it does, to the tune of almost $200 more. Ergo, I'm pleading not guilty. What should I know going in?

I know when I got in an accident, I was given two tickets, a real one and a bs one. I pled guilty to the real one, but not guilty to the bs one, and after about 2 min of talking to the judge they dropped the other charge.

I would think your only prayer of getting out of the pulling over to the left ticket is by taking pictures of the area and showing ample proof that you had plenty of cause to think that doing so was safe for you and the officer. Considering that you were given a ticket for doing so, I would assume that there is a state or local law that specifies pulling over to the right. You're probably SOL. If you're lucky the judge will lower the fine or throw it out if you plead guilty to the speeding. (Not legal advice and all that. blah blah)

As an ex-copper, I'd say you usually have a pretty fair chance on the speeding ticket thing in court. I never wanted to go to court, and my gun was never freshly calibrated. The pulling over the the left thing is usually not as well tolerated. The law in most all states is that you pull over to the right for safety purposes and if you are driving past an emergency vehicle, you get over to the left.

Well, it's a problem. I'd plead absolute contrition and stupidity and new and wonderful knowledge of the safety our officers need to do their jobs. And hope it's just the ticket and court costs.

Unusual. I've seen people pulled over to the left before (not often admittedly) and I didn't really think much of it. Presumably a police officer would know the law better than I would though.

I would go to the DMV and get one of thier little books they give out to new drivers, or those applying for thier license. If it doesnt say NOT to pull over to the left there, that would be my defense. (Of course, I would have just paid the ticket)

Like AWArulz says, there's a decent chance if you fight it in court the officer just won't show up, and the whole thing will get thrown out. Otherwise, just appeal to the judge and see if he'll cut you some slack. Some states have a "No Contest" plea option that basically lets you say that you don't contest the facts of the ticket, but you would like to explain your actions and beg for mercy. I'm currently fighting two tickets (plea bargaining a speeding ticket and genuinely fighting another ticket I believe to absolute bullshit) so my heart goes out to you on this one.
