Where's Grimis when you actually WANT him around, huh?

Anyways, the Hamas group, known for terrorism the world round have won the Iraqi election by a 'surprisingly' strong margin. I say 'surprisingly' because it seems the world leaders didn't think they would be elected as the ruling body of the country, seeing as they're a terrorist organization.

"What's next?", I'm sure, is what the Bush administration is saying; scratching it's head as to how it intends to hand the country over to a religious group that wants to destroy Israel and continue with it violent ways.

The people have spoken, and it seems they don't see eye to eye with what the US thought it would. How do you go about telling a whole country that they are wrong?

I have no idea how you go about dealing with this situation, but one thing is definitely clear: the world loses here.

I'm saying this right now, let the personal insults against me flow afterwards or whatever, but supporting Hamas is akin to supporting Stalin's Russia or Hitler's Germany. With those people/groups in power, their country is geared towards nothing else but antagonizing and screwing up the world. And it all came under the veil of democracy as well, despite the extra bloodiness of Stalin's rise and under-the-table dealing of Hitler's.

We're the middle children of history...no purpose or place. We have no Great War, no Great Depression. Our great war, our defining crucible, is a spiritual war.

I don't think this is going to be as bad as people fear. I expect you will see Hamas move towards a more moderate view (they already have in the past year) and use the fact they still have a broad base of support for non-terror based activities (and being a voice against Israel) provide their electoral strength. They will be the more blustery part of the Fatah/Hamas two party system, but I expect that they will mostly uphold their part of the truce as the more fanatical and active members will bleed off to Islamic Jihad or Al Aqsa. I wonder if there isn't some paralell to the movement of Sinn Fein in this election.

Also, the problem is in characterizing this as "Palestine votes for terrorists". Yes, Hamas is an organization with an armed front. But this is just as much about Fatah corruption and Hamas being a major social welfare player as it is about suicide bombers, in fact it is likely more about those day-to-day things.

So while obviously it isn't a good thing to have people who sponsor terror in charge, I think it can turn out to be less horrible than some people are foreseeing.

Did Hamas come to power in an election that did not have rampant tampering? Apparently so. Thus, as much as the administration would not like it, they need to be recognized as the legitimite government. If they aren't recognized, any chance of democracy in the region goes kaput if the will of the people isn't recognized. In a weird way, it could be a benefit to the peace process, as it would demonstrate that other democratic governments accept the will of a people even if it doesn't match their own.
Plus, it's not like the Israelis and Palestinians were gathering around grasping hands while singing Kumbaya while Fatah had control.
As for the Hitler/Stalin comparisions: The Communists came to power in the Soviet Union following a coup, another coup, and a bloody civil war. Hitler came to power because Hindenburg and Von Papen misread the political landscape, whereby if they had just sat back for a little while the Nazi's momentum (that had already begun to dissipate) would have fizzled out. Hamas played by the rules and won. I don't like it, but, if you are going to allow them to be on the ballot, you have to accept it if they win.

They won the Palestinian election, not the Irqi election. What seems to be happening is that Abbas is planning on reviving the PLO (which he is technically leader of) and try to use it as a negotiating entity to continue the peace process. This will defintely make things interesting.

It really IS getting a lot dumber in here. At least Grimis knew the difference between Palestine and Iraq. (I think.)
