"It takes lots of drunk daddies missing a lot of dance recitals before you decide to blow a goat on the internet for $50, and if that disappears, where does that leave me on a Friday night with my new high speed connection?" -Lazyboy, Underwear Goes Inside the Pants
It's frustrating that every week it seems like every "good" song is something I've never heard of and will probably never will hear of, and the only songs that get play all fall into the "bad" column. How does one find out about any of the music that DOESN'T suck without going completely broke in the process?

Any specific recommendations on that front?
As a good amount of these groups are on non-major labels, a lot of it is available on emusic.com, where you can get something like 50 downloads a month for 9.99.
FWIW, I count at least 19 acts in the Top 40 that get decent radio play on all three of the local "alternative" rock stations in my area, and a few that get onto other formats as well: Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Fiona Apple, Arctic Monkeys, She Wants Revenge, Coldplay, The White Stripes, We Are Scientists, Hot Hot Heat, The New Pornographers, Against Me!, The Strokes (twice), The Darkness, My Morning Jacket, System Of A Down, Foo Fighters, Gorillaz, John Mayer Trio.
There's a two or three others on there that I'm pretty sure get radio play as well.

"Doubt f***s everything. Take a foundation, no matter how strong, sprinkle generously with doubt, and watch it crumble. Me? I'm unf***withable. Not this knee, not bad weather, and certainly not the many men that wish bad intentions on me can stop me. I rise up, not like a phoenix, but like the zombie corpse of Dick Murdoch. This brainbuster is for you." - C.M. Punk
It was mentioned a while ago, and I'm too lazy to go find the thread, but I really like Pandora (pandora.com) for finding new stuff. Put in the name of someone I like, sit back, and discover new stuff. Plus, now that they've gone free with ad support instead of the 10 hour trial, it's great for experimenting.
