Okay, so I visited Rob Van Dam's profile page on WWE.Com, to see if they had any of those teaser trailers about his return at the Royal Rumble available for download ... It turns out that they did, and I dutifully clicked the link found here, which opened up the following video file in my web browser.

Satisfied that I had found the correct file I was looking for, I attempted to save it to my hard drive for future viewings (I'm sure the WWE web team isn't going to keep it up on their web site forever) ... However, when I tried to play the saved file in Windows Media Player, it gave me an error message. Then, doing a little investigative work, I found that I hadn't saved a WMV file at all, but a text file that contained the following:

[Reference]
Ref1=http://livewms.wwe.com/raw/200601/rvdreturnsrumble300.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf
Ref2=http://64.152.4.135:80/raw/200601/rvdreturnsrumble300.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf

Now, could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? It's not like I'm downloading music illegally from their website or anything; WWE.Com is providing the video clip free to its users for download, so (I assume) I should be able to download and save said file without any problems ... I mean, the file is right there and plays fine, it has the WMV extension and everything, but when I try to save it it suddenly becomes something else entirely. What gives?

You can't save video files off their site. You've seen how protective they are of their trademarks, wrestler names, etc., so what made you think they'd give away video content off their site for free? Even the 24/7 stuff you can't save (I don't think).

I dont know why WWE doesnt want people to save files to their HD's but that's the way it is.

There used to be a program where you could enter one of those url's you found in the txt file and the program would DL the file for you & make the necessary conversion into an actual wmv file. I did that around the time WWE made that "History of the WW(W)F" Desire video (right after Ric Flair made his big return to WWE), but after a few months the program stopped working (I still have the video if anybody wants it). My guess is WWE caught on & changed the way they show videos on the .com.

There may be another program out there that can save those for you by now, but I dont know what it is. Happy hunting!

I haven't even been able to view streaming media on WWE.com for a few months, all that happens now is it loads up then says "Ready", but never actually plays. It may be something to do with my having Windows 2000 therefore not being able to have the latest Windows Media Player.

I don't know how to save streams either.

I went into my cache folder for IE and saved the rvdreturnsrumble300[1].dat file (1,299 KB) and tried to load it into the Windows Media Player. No dice.

You wanted the best, you got... Out of Context Quote of the Week.

"Because personally if I was being choked by Ric Flair, my personal reaction would be well, "Glrrrrkkk, can't breathe" but after that... "Man, I'm being choked out by Ric Flair, this is so cool." and then some more "Gllllrrrrk, can't breathe."" (Llakor)

Have you tried downloading the files listed in that .asx file? Worked for me when I got the Royal Rumble videos.

Speaking of WWE.com videos:

"The troubled Tim White is at it again. After his failed attempt at hanging himself last week, the former WWE referee tries again to end it all. This time, he uses the lethal combination of a plugged-in toaster and a tub of water."

There's a link to all the White attempts. But ... who ... WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?

Well, I DL'ed the vid finally after a lot of futzing around with it. I am not sure I can say how I got it, since I know Guru is, or at least was, very nervous about discussion of anything that might be construed as piracy on these boards. I'll just say it can be done. If the Zims say it's ok, I'll post how to do it. If not...sorry. I don't want to get anyone in trouble, including me :)

While this has nothing to do with RVD, and if I had to hazzard a guess, I would say they're building up to Tim White killing himself and then returning from the grave as the undead referee/valet/manager in some as yet undefined angle involving the Undertaker.

Is Tim White really the most electrifying man in sports-entertainment?

I had the same problem, although I have XP and I dont know which version of meadia player, but this may work for you aswell.

In your windows media player go to tools, then options.
Then click on the performance tab.

Under "connection speed" click "choose connection speed" and select a reasonably high setting ( I have mine on "DSL/Cable (768Kbps)")

Click OK.

That should be it. It worked for me.

I use a program called GetASFStream for this sort of thing. Basically, all I had to do was take the address you gave, put it into the program, and it downloaded it. And it works.

In the real world, WWE believes that no matter what our race, religious creed or ethnic background in America, we all share the common bond of being Americans. American-Arabs are a part of the fabric of America, and they should be embraced by all of us.

Yeah, GetASFStream's a great program, and also good on things like any official Grand Slam tennis websites for people wanting to keep the interviews for longer than a couple months.

I have the same streaming problem with their videos that has been described, but mine work half the time. It's not like if I keep clicking it'll eventually load the video, but some will always work for me, and the rest will never work. I've tried that fix before but it had no effect.

I did notice that the problems started right around the time that my other ASF downloading programs stopped working on their site, so I've just assumed that it had something to do with them upping their security (blocking some people from viewing, but deciding to live with it). I could be wrong, but GetASFStream can still download those videos for me to watch offline even if media player can't stream them, so it's not like I'm missing out on any "Classing DiBiase Moments" or anything.

Hmm and this is where it becomes a gray area. There are programs that can do what you want to do, but I'm not sure of how legal it is to give you instructions (thanks DMCA) so let's just leave it at what has been said and move on.

Same exact thing happened to me, and I gave up my 24/7 thing because of it.
