Dear Lovie Smith,

You have a coach for the offense. You have a coach for the defense. You have lots of coaches. However, might I suggest hiring a coach who teaches people how not to fall down on multiple long bombs? Steve Smith does very well when his defender is lying on the ground 25 yds behind him. Also, perhaps a coach who believes in jamming a guy at the line when he is on his way to catching over two hundred yards against you.

Yours,
a Bear fan not-so-eagerly awaiting next year's 5-11 return to crappiness.

It was surprising to see a former defensive coordinator oversee such a disappointing defensive performance. Carolina wanted to get the ball into the hands of one player, and that one player was consistently wide open anywhere from the line of scrimmage to 15-20 yards deep over the middle in the seem of the "too deep" zone.

Who's coached that defense, George Freaking Young?

THANK YOU. I cannot believe the traitors at work who claim to be Browns fans that are *happy* the Steelers won. I for one am truly hoping the asteroid obilterates the stadium followed by the earth opening up and swallowing the remains.

GO NFC.

As a longtime Steelers fan, I would like to say that THIS was my Superbowl and if my team does not beat Denver, I am fine with seeing them knock off the Colts. Thank you.

Sigh...We knock out Seattle's best player, the MVP of the freaking league, and we still can't beat them. Oh well, I'll admit they are for real and they are as good as their record. Still, though, the 'Skins made it farther than I dreamed they could, so...

go Steelers, I guess...

Except JJD is a sad, sad Pats-fan today. The most depressing thing about that game was that ABSOLUTELY BOGUS pass interference-call followed by the fumbled kickoff return, followed by the total implosion of the Pats mentally. That's the sort of thing that the Patriots have been able to overcome, but not Saturday. Champ Bailey's pick was the killer, though, as the Patriots were poised to take the lead if they would've punched it in for six there. Oh well.

OTOH, I admit to being on the Seahawks-bandwagon. (Hey, quit shoving!) AND, it was a LOT more fun to root for the Seahawks, not REALLY caring if they lost, versus living and dying (OK, mostly dying) with every play of Pats-Broncos.

Also, Peyton Manning is still a douchebag.

So does Peyton hold the playoff choke artist award…or does it belong to his O-Line who had more holes than Swiss cheese?

And I think that Bettis and Cowher should buy Big Ben something really nice. Without his stop on the fumble, I don't know if their families could have safely stayed in Pittsburgh last night.

This is a kind of rough "who do I root for" spot for a Packers fan. Cheering for Holmgren and the 'hawks would be kind of like showing up for your ex-wife's wedding...and the Panthers? I guess they have the underdog factor going for them.

As for the Steelers-Broncos? I guess I go with the Steelers because of our last Super Bowl loss....

At least I can watch for the commercials.

You know, Peyton deserves his share of the blame since he gets most of the credit when the Colts win, but his O-line really did get overwhelmed yesterday. I doubt Tom Brady could've done much better given the little time Manning had to throw. (I guess that's why the Pats' O-line has a Visa commercial and the Colts', well...don't.)

Still, you'd think that Peyton could've audibled at least one or two screens underneath to keep the Steelers from blitzing everyone and their sisters.

Regardless, it was easily the best non-Super Bowl playoff game I've seen (in terms of drama) since the Pats-Raiders game during NE's first Super Bowl run.

Would love to see Bettis get a Super Bowl win in his hometown for his last season...

Indeed it's already being called the second greatest play in Steelers history. Best headline? "LONG STRANGE TRIP."

Dan Marino played in a Super Bowl.

All smart-ass comments aside, I have to say that I have no problem with what Peyton Manning said after the game. And I would have had no problem if he had said "Not only did my offensive line suck out there today, but that was a fine job my coaches did in making zero adjustments to handle the blitz." When Manning had any time at all, he was awesome. Look at the Colts' scoring drives. Absolutely beautiful.

What bugs me about this is the same thing that bugs me about everybody jumping all over Peyton when he waved the punt team off the field. They don't take into consideration the fact that Manning has been given more authority on the field than any other player in the NFL. Tony Dungy has given him the right to do things like that because he's earned it. So if he's earned the right to call plays at the line of scrimmage and wave off the punt team _ again, the head coach of the team is okay with that _ then hasn't he earned the right to say "hey, the pass blocking sucked"? Let's face it. It DID suck.

Here in the Pittsburgh area, it is already being hailed as "The Tackle".

I hate the AFC now. Go Seahawks!

Championship Picks:

Denver 27 Pittsburgh 24 - when Bettis fumbles again and Champ Bailey recovers, only to stomp over Roethlisberger. He then stiff-arms Hines Ward the last 10 yards into the end zone. Denver's been to the Super Bowl already, I'm over that now. Pittsburgh MUST lose.

Seattle 21 Carolina 17 - 'cause I was rooting for the Bears.

2/4 for two weeks in a row. Mediocrity, thy name is Wpob!

Revised picks:

Carolina over Seattle
** I have never gotten comfortabel with Seattle and I can;t seem to pick them this week either. Carolina, even without Foster, seems to be rolling and if they can put 29 on Chicago, IN CHICAGO, then 35 seems likely against Seattle indoors. Smith has another MONSTER game.

Pittsburgh over Denver
** Better coach. Pittsburgh looks unbeatable and I think Shannahan can get rattled if outcoached, which he will be. Pittsburgh is another close one.

SUPER BOWL

Pittsburgh v. Carolina
** It is almost likely twins these teams. Both are well coached, with good QBS, a strong interchangaeable running game and 1 stud WR. Defenses are both stellar and boith teams are peaking at the right time. As much as I want to take Carolina, I think it is Pittsburgh's time to shine.

Well, that's just drunk talk! Sweet, beautiful drunk talk....

However, given all of that, isn't there something to be said for the idea that if he has all this authority to wave things off and to make so many decisions, that he needed to alter the playcalling to adjust for the lack of time. Lots more screens, some more play action to try and freeze the defense some...we blame coaches when teams don't play well, and since judging by this Manning is a de facto coach, seems to me blame needs to lay on him as much as anyone, if not more.

Seattle hasn't played in a dome for five years, I think.

Yeah, the Skins actually aren't as shabby as a lot of people seem to think. With less injuries and a slightly easier division they could've easily had a few more Ws.
