That’s a very good point. Not only would it have been easy to put those guys in: they should have torn Teddy Long’s door down to get in. Becoming heavyweight champ is supposed to be a huge deal, and the goal of every superstar in the locker room. While I can actually understand Taker staying out of it (his character seems to be above such material concerns at the moment) it makes no sense for Orton and especially Benoit to be content on the sidelines. It's completely out of character for them to avoid a chance like this.
Heck, for something like this, it wouldn’t even have been out of character for Cowboy Bob and Piper to come out.
Didn't Big Show and Kane fight at the last Smackdown PPV with no reasoning given? WWE has been more and more loose in terms of what their excuse for guys jumping brands is. I'm sure we'll get a reason from Angle (or Vince on Monday).

That's just silly. They didn't send Rob Conway over and make him the champ suddenly. It's KURT FUCKING ANGLE we're talking about.
I don't care if it was HULK FUCKING HOGAN, it still is bad booking. Like I said, I love me some Kurt Angle, but in my opinion he isn't any better than CHRIS FUCKING BENOIT, so it's not like they had no one of that caliber already on the show.

I think WWE was able to kill 2 birds with one stone by bringing over a main event (not to mention highly over) talent to help bost SD's depleted roster AND by replacing their injured world champion with a new credible world champion, all without using up all of January to do it.
Like JJD said, it's not like they used some loser no one would accept. I think they did the best job they could with what they had to work with in the shortest period of time possible. I got no problem with it.
I'm wondering about Angle's health now. They seem to be severely limiting the amount of wrestling he has to do -- the series of three-minute specials last year, taking him out of the Elimination Chamber quickly, and now it sounds like he spent most of the battle royal "knocked out" instead of participating.

Couldn't have said it better myself. People bitch that Smackdown needs more main eventers. So WWE goes and moves one of their top 5 guys to the show & what happens? People bitch.
Some many good scenarios can come from this. Angle can play it up as he's better than everyone on the roster, thus the reason that won the title in his Smackdown re-debut.
For the last time, NO-ONE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT KURT ANGLE AS CHAMPION. But the booking of it is rushed, implausible and, worst of all, totally fixable! They could have even scrounged a few more Rumble buys on the premise of any one of THIRTY men winning the World Heavyweight Title, instead of this awful, awful-looking Battle Royal.

AH, but if you read the spolers it clearly says that Orton asked to be in the Battle Royal and was shot down by Long. Long said the no one would wrestle 2 matches on Smackdown, eliminating Orton and Benoit, who Long said must face eachother in the 7th match of the series.

While there are a few who are bitching that the new champ is a Raw guy, regardless who it is, I think the bigger complaint here is just the shoddy storytelling they did here. Because even with the way they did it, they missed out on opportunities:
1) They could have had Orton and Benoit show up for both matches. It would build up both wrestlers by their having a long, drawn-out match for the US Title, and then going right back at it later in the night for the bigger prize. Hell, working multiple matches in one night is practically Benoit’s gimmick.
2) If only one Raw guy shows up for a Battle Royal, it’s pretty much a given that he’ll win. Otherwise, his jump will be a waste. It’s not hard for the audience to go, “Which of these things is not like the other?” and figure out who’s going to win.
In terms of talent reorganization, it was a good move. Angle has a history with everyone in SD’s main-event scene, so he’s not even starting new feuds so much as rekindling his old ones. But in terms of telling the best possible story, they took the lazy way of doing it.
Plus, wasn’t Daivari told by Teddy Long to never come back?

If they did that, they would have taken the air right out of the title that they have been trying for the past two to three months to build up as a legitimate second tier title. What good would that have done them?
Of course the former World champ was feuding with the manager of the Tag champions (MNM hold the titles, right?) which on the surface seems stupid, but is really kind of old school when you look at it. (Not that Bobby Heenan, Freddie Blassie, The Grand Wizard, or Mr. Fuji would have ever accused Hulk Hogan, Bob Backlund, or Superstar Billy Graham of [storyline] sexual harrassment, but I hope you get what I'm playing at.)

Originally posted by Matt TrackerSpeaking of new champs Angle and Edge, was it Edge who initially asked the audiences to chant "you suck" during Angle's theme?
Edge might have fanned the flames in 2002 when they had their fued that culminated in Angle being scalped, but the first I remember of the YOU SUCK chants were at the tail end of his first title run in 2001, and at the time Edge was not only a heel, but this was when Team ECK was still loosely associated.
And to fully answer your question, I'm almost positive the whole thing started in the first place as something the fans took it upon themselves to do.
Exactly, it started while Angle was feuding with Stone Cold during the "What?!" period. I remember there were times when it was a call and answer of "You Suck!" "What?!"
I didn't realize that Kurt Angle, Hulk Hogan, and Chris Benoit all had the same middle name of Fucking.
Big Show: Why is he getting the Intercontinental Title shot and not me? RVD: Ahhh...maybe 'cause you're a tool. Big Show: Look. I am 7'2". I am 500 pounds. I'm a giant. RVD: Oh ok. You're a giant tool.

SPOILER INFORMATION FOR NEXT WEEK'S RAW by Dave Scherer @ 2:40:00 PM on 1/11/2006
With Kurt Angle's winning of the World Title at the Smackdown taping last night, I have gotten a lot of email asking me if the Angle vs. Shawn Michaels match is still on for next Monday's Raw. As of right now, it is. The plan is for the storyline that started on Smackdown to carry over to Raw, where Angle's future will be explained. We will have more on the subject on tomorrow's No Name Show in the Elite section of the site. --------------------------------------------------------
I wonder if they DO keep the match up on Monday night, why not make it a "Winner Goes To Smackdown As The Champ" match? Has HBK EVER been on Smackdown since the brand split? I honestly don't recall if he has.

What a double-edged sword: Win the World Tilte but go to BoogeymanLand. And having two RAW stars wrestle for the SD championship does seem to slight the entire Friday night roster.

Actually, the first occurrence of the "You Suck" chant was a Smackdown! in February of 2001. It was right before No Way Out 2001, and he was facing the Rock. He had them play his music video three or four times, and in the middle of the second or third time the crowd started in on him.

Ah, I can see the Jack Napier-mirror scene already. Hall is handed the mirror, but first she is warned that the surgeons did all they could, but she would never look the same again. Then, when she looks in the mirrow, no mole, and POOF! she's hot. I wonder if Hall will feel thankful that Boogey got rid of her deformity and offer to manage him?
