I'll go with the baseball philosophy that always makes me want to fire something through the television: 0 balls 2 strikes 2 outs runner on first and a pitch-out is called. Throw the 3rd strike and end the inning already, especially in this era of pitch counts.

Baseball - Changing pitchers in the late innings based solely on lefty-righty match-ups. My television is usually in danger of being damaged when I see the manager walk to the mound after a pitcher has faced one batter & thrown two pitches.
I'd be for a rule that made it mandatory for a pitcher to face at least two batters, unless the one batter he faces ends an inning...

Bingo. Nothing aggravates me like seeing a team just give up chunks of yardage over several successive plays to prevent the "big play" 60 or 80 yard touchdown pass. If you're afraid of getting burned on a long pass, bring in your nickel package, but don't just rush 3 and lay off the line of scrimmage for the next 10-20 yards leaving it open for quick slants or passes in the flat.

Yup. Especially since it's not like every team has a guy who can dominate against lefthanders (since it's more common to switch from a righty to put in a left for one better).

Similarly, I can't stand the counterproductive idea of pitch counts. Sure, they can be useful in making sure that your pitcher isn't overworked, but it seems like more and more managers act as if throwing more than 110 pitches could cause a starters' arm to literally go flying off of his body. Nothing does more to lose baseball games than bringing in the vaunted middle relievers.

In baseball: Intentionally walking someone. That annoys me. Be a man and pitch it down the middle and see what happens.

I have never understood why Hockey players just shoot the puck down into the corner after they cross the blue line. Maybe a pass or stick handling might be in order.

And in Basketball, fouling a zillion times in the last few minutes, even though you're a bunch of points down.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Corrected to show my opinion of it as well.

Baseball - I will also go with managers who strictly adhere to the righty-lefty matchups with their relief pitchers.

Damn redsoxnation, I thought for sure you would say "leave your Jerhi curled pitcher in too long".

Actually, I hate the "defensive replacement" if the guy is such a liability in the field, why is he playing the other 7 or 8 innings of a game?

Generally if a team feels like they have the legs to outskate the other team (like if Calgary's playing Nashville, and Nashville played the night before), they'll do a lot of what's called "dump & chase."

Or they're going for a line change.

Or they have the lead and they're playing left-wing lock (two forecheckers, and the left wing plays back with the defense to prevent odd-man rushes).

That falls under worst coaching/managerial decision of all time, not philosophy, as Little's philosophy the whole season had been to pull Pedro after he pointed to the sky to end an inning, thus signifying he was done. Timlin in the 8th, Williamson in the 9th.

BASEBALL: Taking a pitch on a 3-0 count. 99.9% of the time, the pitcher will throw a fat pitch down the middle of the plate that a 12-year old could take out of the park. SWING AT IT, you fucking nimrod!

FOOTBALL: Punting the football inside your opponent's 40-yard line. The overwhelming majority of the time, the punt goes through the freaking end zone, and the opponent's offense gets it back to where they would have had it had you done the SMART thing and gone for it, despite not making it. Seriously, I don't understand whether coaches coach to WIN THE FUCKING GAME or not to lose it...

It's good to see that the WWE isn't backing away from Batista or Cena. There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. The longer Triple H stays away is also a plus...

Sort of going along with Texas Kelly...

Punting the ball high and hoping one of your players will down it instead of ANGLING IT OUT OF BOUNDS. Come on! Is it so hard? Are you telling me your punter can't do it? Punting is all he does for a living! He damn well better be able to get it SOMEWHERE inside the 20. Even if it's *just* inside the 20, that's better than a bad bounce that goes in for a touchback, or a gunner that's too stupid to understand how to properly down a punt.

I got one: Playing an injured starting quarterback that can't move instead of a perfectly capable backup that can when you're going against a defense that includes one of the best pass rushers in NFL postseason history.

This will get added at the end of each post you make, below an horizontal line. This should preferably be kept to a small enough size.

Hockey: having your power-play team pass and pass and pass looking for the perfect shot. Shoot the puck! Most goals happen off of rebounds and such anyway.

Yeah, the problem with holding on to the puck for two long is that there comes a point where the defenseman will stop skating backwards as much and end up rubbing you out along the boards and just take the puck. The pass isn't any good because your momentum will take you offsides.

Of course, you could be watching Leaf's games and wondering this. The point of the 'dump and chase' is that when the puck is dumped in, the other forwards are *supposed* to charge in as fast as they can to recover the puck, but Leaf's always seem to be thinking "I thought the OTHER guy was going to put out the effort on that play... my bad".

For my "Worst Philosophy", off the top of my head I gotta go with the "kicking the ball out of bounds". I mainly just watch the CFL, but this might go for the NFL as well. I don't know how many times I've seen a punt go out of bounds, giving up better field position, only to see the quarterback put together a short drive and get at least a field goal. Sure, there's the chance of a huge return, but there's always that chance. If that's what you're scared of, why EVER kick it in bounds? Probably something that "just bugs me" more than anything.

If you can do it where you kick the ball out of bounds at the 5 or 10 yard line, that's fine. I'm talking about how they take 25-35 yards off their distance to get it out of bounds rather than just boot it and have faith in your special teams to hold them to less than 35 on the return.

Calling a time out to "ice" the kicker might count as well, as I don't know how much that actually works. I could be wrong, but it just seems like a waste of time to me. 99% of the time the kicker knows it's coming anyways.

Football- When there's less than a minute left and a team is down by a score or less, the idea that squibbing the ball is safer than kicking it deep, when half the time on a squib, the recieving team gets posession somewhere around the 35-40 yard line, if not midfield. Whereas if you can get it to the end zone, they'd start 30 yards behind that, so it's sometimes like teams are giving away yardage when they should just show more faith in their wedge-busters.

Let's see...

I also hate the "Dump & Chase" in hockey. I understand during a line charge but not every single time up the ice!

I hate fans that don't give hockey a chance and think it nothing but fighting. If you don't like the sport that's fine, but there is more than fighting.

I don't like people that rag on pro wrestling saying it is fake. Well, I don't think Steve Carell was REALLY a "40 Year Old Virgin" so technically isn't THAT fake as well?

I remember when Andy Reid called for an onside kick at the beginning of the game. Of course when it works I like it though. When it tanks I am pissed beyond belief. He should NEVER try it against the Cowboys. I hate them more than any other team.

I hate hearing the terms "Walk Off Homer" and "West Coast Offense". Also, "Grand Slam Homer" is redundant. You can't have a "Grand Slam Single".

I hated it when the Eagles tried to make Cunningham a pocket passer. Now they seem to be doing the same thing to McNabb.

I hated it when the Sixers had Manute Bol then cut him to draft Shawn Bradley, who was basically Manute Bol in a white body back then.

I hate the one batter setup man in baseball.

I hate pitch counts.

I hate it when a baseball player is wearing sunglasses on the top of his hat then loses a fly ball in the sun. PUT THE GLASSES ON YOUR FACE YOU IDIOT!!!

OK...I think I am done.

God bless the men of 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard...good luck, and come home soon.

Anything called by Wayne Fontes. :-)

No, seriously speaking on football:
Relying on Darren Sharper in a playoff defensive situation. Ergo:

1998 (the last season before replay's return, IIRC): Scott McGarrahan causes The Great Jerry Rice to fumble...but silly rabbit, The Great Jerry Rice never fumbles. 49ers keep the ball...

(Too late, Darren...image courtesy this site)

...and Steve Young finds OWENS! OWENS! OWENS! in the end zone for the winning score...defending NFC champion Packers don't follow MXC's advice & get eliminated.

Why it's Sharper's Fault: Dude knew the 49ers needed a TD to win. Did he defend the goal line? Hell no...he hung out about 4 yards deep in the end zone, and hit TO only after he had crossed the goal line. Great jorb there, pal.

FUHFUHWUD (tm CRZ) to:

2003: 4th-and-f*cking-26. Unknown whether then-defensive coordinator Ed Donatell called for the "Thriller" (hee) blitz (same formation used the previous week when Al Harris INT'd Matt Hasselbeck for the game-winning TD in OT @ Lambeau), but was overridden by coach/GM Mike Sherman for a prevent formation.

(Same as it ever was...thanks to this site)

McNabb to FredEx, they convert 4th-and-26, David Akers stabs me in the chest, the long slide begins.

Why it's Sharper's Fault: Dude has GOT to figure out by now that letting the opposition get a 1st down in that situation is a BAD thing, and it might help to not let the receiver get by you and get said first down.

So my advice to new Viqueen head coach Brad Childress...don't rely on #42 to do sh*t for you in must-win situations. Or go ahead and burn for it. :-)
