The Minnesota Vikings fired coach Mike Tice after Sunday's victory over Chicago.

Owner Zygi Wilf announced he would not renew Tice's contract in a statement less than an hour after the Vikings' 34-10 win over the Bears in the regular season finale. Tice, who finished his fourth full season with a 32-32 overall record, had already addressed the media before the move was made public. The announcement came via press release after most players had left the Metrodome.

Damn ... that was fast ... so first Mooch & now Tice. I'd wager that Dom Capers is next on the chopping block.

Come to think of it, probably 1/4 of NFL teams will have new coaches next season.

With any luck, Green Bay will be one of them.

Tice probably had his office packed in the backseat of his ride anyways, then again, no one ever accused him of knowing what to do.

Tice called himself a lame duck coach a few weeks ago, so he knew this was coming well in advance. Which is a shame. I sorta liked him as a big doofus who could sorta manage to coach a good football team if he could just pull everything together.

Lets see...

Assuming that the interim coaches failed their 'interview' as it were, we currently have openings in Detroit, St. Louis, Minnesota, and Kansas City.

I've heard that Haslett wants out of New Orleans, so we can probably add them to the list. (although good luck to who ever wants to coach there). I agree that Capers is toast in Houston also.

I have a feeling Sherman will survive in Green Bay. Farve has said that if Sherman goes, so too does he go, and I can't see him going yet. However, if Farve does decide to hang it up, or if management decides its is time to move on and go with Aaron Rodgers, then all bets are off.

Plus, there are the rumours that Herm Edwards is bound for Kansas City, which opens up the Jets, and the rumours (though denied) that Parcells was contemplating retirement as well.

What teams am I missing?

Indiana! Indiana!

. . . let it go.

I'd say Norv Turner may have already started comparing the prices of moving companies as well.

And Mike Mularkey probably didn't sleep well last night as well, though he may get one more year. If the Bills go through one more losing season, I'd say he & Donahoe are both out.

ESPN has the list at:

Mike Tice
Dom Capers
Mike Martz
Dick Vermiel

Add in Detroit, and there's 5 right off the bat. The other two names that ESPN are keying on are Turner, and Sherman.

Mike Mularkey went from 9-7 to 5-11, and there are "changes need to be made" quotes coming from the team owner, so he could be in trouble. Outside of him and Haslett, anyone else coming up would really surprise me.

Ask & ye shall receive ... ESPN.com just posted a Brekaing News blurb about Sherman's canning.

Looks like the organization may be ready to move ahead with Favre A.D.

I think that's a shame about Sherman getting fired. He didn't seem like that bad of a coach, and this season makes sense given that the team was decimated by injuries.

I should have remembered Norv Turner. Mularky's only had two years with the organization since they canned Gregg Williams. Shouldn't he be given a little more time? (Even if the record is sliding backwards?)

Brian Billick is safe in Baltimore, right? Or should we add his name to the likely-to-be-canned list?

Nope. Owner Steve Bisciotti already announced last week that Billick will be brought back for the 2006 season. So at least I have that to look forward to...

That was pretty damn classless the way the Wilf's canned Tice. A local sports radio announceer was there Sundya afternoon and said when Tice came out of the locker room Sunday after the game, he described it as "Jack Ruby being escorted out of the courthouse". THAT must have felt good to Mike. I liked Tice and thought that they should have gave him another chance, BUT, if they were going to keep him, that he should have got another three year deal so he wouldn't have to go year to year wondering what was going to happen next. There was no way Zygi was going to do that, so I understand that canning, but damn, let the guy enjoy his final victory ferchrissakes.
