Normally, I've always had a few games for any system that were "cult", and unusual, but well liked by the people who played them. It seems like on the PS2, I haven't been able to really find anything like that (considering the relatively large success of Katamari Damacy and its sequel...), aside from Disaster Report.

Well, I'm sending the call out to the W to see if anyone can suggest a few more underrated, underplayed, undersold PS2 games. Though I suppose I should mention beforehand that I am not a fan of FPS, RTS, and I don't have the broadband adaptor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Though I'm not sure if this qualifies anymore as being a "cult favorite" since they made a sequel to it, I was very impressed with The Mark of Kri. It provided many good, long hours of playing time, and really forced me to utilize some good strategy along with the regular hacking-and-slashing.

I should let you know that it's extremely violent, though, particularly as you get deeper into the game, so if that kind of thing isn't your cup of tea, I'd approach with caution.

I absolutely love Shadow of the Colossus. It's by the makers of Ico (as mentioned, a great game itself). You'd think climbing and hacking at giant monsters (16 in all) would get boring, but the game is both gorgeous and addictive.

Tobal No. 1 for the PSone. Why it didn't take off considering it's impressive framerate, I don't know.

Seconding Shadow of the Colossus, Frequency, and Amplitude. Three of my favorite games of all time, besides being so unique.

I liked that game too, but I was a young impressionable teenager. Looking back at that game now, I recognize it for what it was: a super blocky 3D fighter. Granted, it was a 3D fighter back when fighters were pretty much all 2D only, but the graphics weren't all that spectacular. Plus, apparently I was the only person in the world that liked the RPG-esque mission mode.

Tobal No.1 was a blocky 3D fighter sure but.. dear lord it had such incredible depth and the unreleased US Tobal 2 was even deeper (with sharper graphics) and of course both games had those great Akira Toriyama character designs.

Another great game for PS1 that i adored and had great gameplay (and hada good degree of challenge to it) was Ghost In The Shell. Playing entirely in a Tachikoma, tihs game was excellent and never really took off in the US like i though it would despite some very strong reviews.

Well, I never had a problem finding obscure games for the first PSX (PS1, whatever you prefer to call it..) Heck, that was my specialty

Gunner's Heaven, Battle Hunter, Ghost in the Shell, G-Darius, Bust-A-Groove, Silhouette Mirage, TRAG, Gungage, Trap Gunner, Psychic Force, Silent Bomber, Sokyugurentai, Evil Zone, Incredible Crisis, Tall Infinity, C-12, Intelligent Qube, Slap Happy Rhythm Busters... I could keep going.

It just seems like it's hard to find such games on the PS2, whether they be domestic _or_ import.

Right now, SLAI is looking interesting to me.... Has anyone here played it yet?

Behold the "Wise" Words of Renegade Raine, the Bishounen Hunter:

Monster Rancher - You take a monster (or a few of them in the fourth game), raise it's stats, and try to become the best trainer around. And I'm pretty sure this came out way before Pokemon. The funnest part is that it can create monsters from almost any CD, so it's always interesting to see what monster comes from say, your Madonna Ray of Light CD.

Magic Pengel - You DRAW your monster and depending on how you draw it determines it's stats. I haven't beat it, but it's still an interesting game.

Harvest Moon - I love this series. The main objective is to make the ultimate farm, but you also have to start a family and make friends with the villagers. It's sort of like SimFarm mixed with a dating sim. Just make sure you don't get Save the Homeland, because that one sucks.

UnJammer Lammy - Parappa had a decent amount of success, but I don't think this game got it's due. Sure, it's guitar playing instead of rapping, but I remember spending a lot of time in the multiplayer mode against my cousin.

Dino Crisis - Basically a rip off of Resident Evil, with dinosaurs. But I liked it.

That's all I can think of for now.

Hmm, how about Disgaea or any of the Nippon Icchi strategy RPG's? You'd probably like those.

Actually, I don't really like those too much. Disgaea was OK, the rest is just overkill. Entirely too much levelling up in those things. Anything more complex than Arc : Twilight of the Spirits is too advanced for my slow mind :/

As far as weird games, I always got a kick out of Mister Mosquito. Sure you're a mosquito, but you've got this Top Gun style cockpit information flashing on the screen. You can tell they had a lot of fun making this game.

Guitar Hero, a new game with a small guitar controller, is fantastic fun. Unfortunately it's a right-handed guitar, and it confounds my three decades of air guitaring.
