For me, it just doesn't feel like Christmas until here some of the music from the Peanuts Christmas special. There's something about that slow, deliberate piano tinkling that just sets me into the season in a proper way.

The music from the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas cartoon special, the one directed by Chuck Jones and narrated by Boris Karloff, would be a close second. Especially the Who's carol around the fire.

He was a popular attraction until he choked to death on a corn kernel.

Yeah, the Peanuts Christmas Special is pretty great.

Other than that, "Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues.

Or "Deck Us All With Boston Charlie."

Mormon Tabernacle Choir's "Sing, Choirs of Angels!" and "A Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas" albums are excellent choices.

Notch another for The Pogues. Christy Moore's version of "Fairytale of New York" is sacrelige, as he cuts the second verse.

A fun, sexy time.

To me, it's just not Christmas until ourr church starts to sing the carols. Away in a Manger, Hark, Silent Night, O Little Town, We Three Kings.

I guess if I had to choose one, I'd have to choose 'O Holy Night' though.

Bing Crosby's version of "White Christmas" will always be my favorite Christmas song.

I've always had a somewhat shameful love for "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey.

I like any of the "old" versions of the popular Christmas songs. So anything by Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, etc.

My favorite Christmas song? Probably the one I sang as a solo in church today-- "What Child is This?" Such a gorgeous piece of music. When you're doing it kinda slow and creepy-like, which I prefer, it's awfully hard to find convenient places to breathe, though.

I'm much more a fan of sacred Christmas music than the secular. Every year the umpteen-quadrillionth playings of "Jingle Bell Rock" or "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" drive me up a tree (though I do like "White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song"-- sung by Bing Crosby and Nat "King" Cole, respectively).

But bring on the "Angels We Have Heard on High", "Silent Night, Holy Night", "O Come All Ye Faithful", "O Holy Night", "We Three Kings", "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night", "O Little Town of Bethlehem", and probably a dozen more songs that didn't immediately come to mind.

I used that Carey song for the end of my station's blooper tape for the upcoming Christmas party...so I guess I'm ashamed, too. :-)

And for you old-school folks, in addition to more love for A Charlie Brown Christmas, go pick up the DVD of "Happy Holidays with Frank and Bing," an old TV special the two of 'em did (sponsored by Bulova watches and Chesterfield cigarettes!), complete with a trip back in time to 1800s Christmas in England...and booze in the punch.

Hell, this holiday season, I'd drink, too...thanks, Packers.

Incidentally, I'm running a favorite-holiday-song contest on rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1960s and rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1970s. If you're interested, check out the newsgroup or groups.google.com. It's a tournament where you vote for the song you prefer out of each pair, and we narrow it down to the favorite of the 60s or 70s. (You can vote in all matchups, or only in the ones you wish.)

Definitely the Chipmunks' Christmas Don't Be Late, but I like hearing Santa Claus Got Stuck in the Chimney, any instrumental version of Carol of the Bells, and We're a Couple of Misfits (the one from the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special). I also like the Polish & Slavic carols we do before Midnight Mass.

Amen to that. It's not really Christmas season for me until we start singing the classic carols in choir and in church. I'm going to be doing a prelude for the evening service next week on my fife which allows me to play some of my favorites including "We Three Kings", "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel", "As With Gladness Men of Old", "The First Noel", and "Joy to the World." Two others that I love but I won't be playing because they just don't sound good on my fife are "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" and "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day".

Leroy, the Redneck Reindeer from Joe Diffie. I'll take original, corny songs over the oversung crap on the radio nowadays.

That, or instrumentals.
