BOSTON --The struggling Boston Bruins traded captain Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night in exchange for three players.

The Bruins get forwards Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau and defenseman Brad Stuart for Thornton, who signed a three-year, $20 million contract with Boston in August and was once thought to be the future of the franchise.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Thornton had been the key to the Bruins' offense. He scored more than 20 goals in each of his last five NHL seasons, including two with 30 or more. In 2003-04, he led the team in scoring with 23 goals and 50 assists.

This season, the 26-year-old Thornton has nine goals and 24 assists for Boston, which has lost nine of its last 10 games and is in last place in the Northeast Division.

Hmmm, perhaps this stalls the Mike Sullivan death watch for a bit. Now there will be Bruins talk on WEEI for at least an hour or two tomorrow before the callers go back to Manny Ramirez and the Patriots injury problems.

I wonder what the combined salaries of the 3 new guys are because one of Boston's problems was/is the salary cap, despite managment's pre-season proclamtions that things had worked just like they wanted and they were in great position money-wise.

The Bruins will save 1.66 million dollars against the cap with this trade.

So I see why San Jose would make the deal, but what do the B's get out of it? They save a bit of cap room, but there were other ways to do that...

Is Boston throwing in the towel on the season already?

Wasn't Thorton going to be a free agent? And Likely not to re-sign with the B's?

This appears to be throwing the towel in for several years and for what purpose? How can saving a little cap room be worth giving away your best player??? And believe me, they gave him away because these three scrubeenies they got back is a crap sandwich. I must go read the Boston Globe now so my head will really explode.

This reminds me of why I'm glad I turned from a Bruins fan to an Avs fan. (Thank you Ray Bourque-trade!) How does giving a guy a three-year, near-max deal then trading him after only 20 GAMES make ANY sense?

THE BRUINS: They needed a shakeup of some sort after a lousy start to the season. Personally, I think you can lay the fault on the defense and poor goaltending and not Thorton. And I don't think ANYBODY counted on the Northeast being the northBEAST with all of the killer teams in there *who wants to play Ottawa, Habs, Leafs, and Sabres eight times this season?). I'll tell ya though, NO ONE on that roster is safe, and they know that now. Sturm, Primeau, and Stuart aren't anyone to sneeze at. They don't have the skill of Thorton alone, that much is true....but they are still good players. I think this trade makes Bostona better TEAM, and gives them some more pieces to build with. That's not pieces to build AROUND, but WITH. None of those guys can you say "hey, he's a cornerstone!". But they are guys who can contribute on a regular basis. The 1.66 million being saved? Well, they can make a run for someone now.

THE SHARKS: BRILLIANT trade by Doug Wilson. They needed a shakeup as well. Some scoring and size were the two big needs. He certianly aquired that. The Sharks have TONNES of deph on their team, they were merely lacking that goto guy, the impact player who can change the face of the game. The Sharks now have two of the best young centres in the game with Thorton and Patrick Marlou (sp?). They'll be set in that position for YEARS.

ADAVTANGE: Sharks, no question.

To celebrate the upcoming Troll Amnesty (and for otherwise no reason at all), I present to you the very best of Trolling here on The W. This weeks Troll Moment of the Week is brought to you by;

Bret screwed bret, who brought us such pieces as wisdom as: "I DID NOT come here to be attacked and trolled by these brain dead Steve Austin marks nor any Bret sheep. Thank you Mr. Zim for not paying attention to the trolls that was a great statement. I myself will not pay attention to these trolls either but continue posting clear, concise and well thought out commentary on those two worthless bastards Bret and Steve. Glad to see this board is run by intelligent people. I will however require an apology from the persons who insulted me. That was uncalled for and very low class indeed."

True enough that is a small savings, but for the next two years the savings balloons to 13 million.

This will free up room for them to go after something bigger next summer....

Still don't like the deal, but one must wait and see, I guess.

I have since read the Globe and the feeling is "well, something needed to happen." Thornton seemed surprised and a little disappointed and that he was being blamed for the lousy start. Some of the writers are saying maybe if Bergeron, Raycroft and some of the others had stepped up a little, then Joe wouldn't have been traded. The article also stated that in coming seasons, Thornton's contract would have assumed about 20% of their payroll. There was also some belief that Samsonov would be the one traded since he's an unrestricted free agent after the season. Maybe he's next?

Hey...if the B's can trade Bourque they can trade anyone.

I guess we should also keep in mind that Gretzky was traded twice (or was it three times).

Something else about Thornton's contract that I didn't know until tonight, he had a no-trade clause for years 2 and 3. From listening to Harry Sinden and Mike O'Connell today and knowing that about the contract, I get the impression the team thought Thornton had done all he could do here and they didn't see him improving past the level he'd reached, so they moved him and will look to spend the money elsewhere rather than have it locked up. I don't necessarily have a problem with that line of thinking, but I think concern over the money caused them to come up way short in shopping the deal to get as close to equal value as they could talent-wise.

The Flames (circa 1991) had a huge bloated payroll and had to dismantle, so they did so in a series of trades just as lopsided as the Thornton deal (if not moreso). Those deals, especially the absolutely one-sided Doug Gilmour trade, were just as rushed as the Thornton deal and sunk a profitable and successful team.

Let's hope the Bruins don't fall into the same trap.

A nice 3-0 win against the league's top team last night and Sturm scores on his first shift. That's a good way to be welcomed by your teammates. We'll see how long the honeymoon lasts, though.
