The general gist: Colin Cowherd claims that wrestlers aren't athletes, and that Eddie's death wasn't newsworthy.

Lords of Pain has a lot of articles concerning it.

What a total dick. No offence to people who like his work, but come on.

I listened to this yesterday morning. Colin is a dick anyway, even before this. His show usually consists of either rambling on & on about somehing that only he is interested in (which city has the cleanest airport in the USA, his daughter is soooo smart, here's how I used to get chicks in high school, etc), or he'll bring up a topic, choose the position most likely to draw disagreeing callers, shout them all down & argue with/hang up on anyone who is able to prove him wrong.

Yesterday morning was more of the same. First he said wrestlers werent athletes because wrestling is not a real sport ("It's more theatre than sport!"). One of his producers in a wrestling fan and stood up for wrestlers being excellent athletes despite wrestling being scripted.

Colin then changed the subject to arguing that a wrestling death isnt real news because "No one really watches that crap anyway, so who cares?" His producer brought up A) 5 million people watch SD! every week, and B) Just because Colin doesnt like/watch something, that doesnt mean no one else does.

Colin THEN changed the subject to "Let's take calls & decide that if this IS in fact news, do you put it in the Entertainment section of the newspaper or the Sports section?" Colin's argument was that Sports fans dont care about Entertainment (which he feels wrestling falls under), but people who read the Entertainment section dont care about wrestling.

I hate that "Constant Devil's Advocate" style of talk radio he does and I hate him too, but I still listen to help pass the time until Dan Patrick comes on.

Setting aside the high emotions surrounding this thing, I don't understand Cowherd's reasoning. Why does a celebrity have to be an athlete before his death is newsworthy? Does Cowherd refuse to report on the untimely deaths of coaches and officials?

I assume this comes down to Cowherd feeling that he's a sports journalist and wrestling isn't a sport and irrelevant to his show. Fine. I'm always surprised when ESPN, Fox Sports, and Sports Illustrated cover wrestling anyway--it seems to be treated as a gray area and I won't fault anyone in sports for steering clear of it. Bringing it up just to rudely explain why you won't bring it up, though, is obnoxious.

And whether or not Cowherd thinks pro wrestling is worthy material for ESPN, Eddie's death probably is. It's entirely possible his death was caused by long-term effects of his painkiller addiction, which I'm sure is as much of a problem in the sports Cowherd considers to be worth his time. When baseball is under scrutiny for steroid abuse, the wrestling news is all over it, regardless of the fact that baseball players aren't wrestlers.

I just think it's Cowherd trying to alienate as many people as possible. He seems to get joy out of riling up hardcore fans (see also his statements about the Packers/Favre in the past few weeks and his statements about Penn State earlier this season). It probably gets him ratings and things to talk about. I'm just about done taking him seriously.

I think Roy and Frosty are correct. Cowherd takes the contrary position just to drum up negative responses. It appears that a lot of the time, you can't even keep track of what his position is on an issue. Cowherd is fine in very small doses, but long term exposure could cause health problems.

Apparently more than a few people got annoyed, since when you call ESPN Customer Service at 860-766-2000 and ask to complain about those comments, you get directed to a line set up solely to deal with the Eddie situation, and a half-assed apology by ESPN regarding his comments and the insinuations made.

As many people here know, Cowherd has been a blight on ESPN radio since Mr Tony left the network last year. And since TK is back, at least on the net for those of us not in DC, he might as well not be on the air.

all that said, I wonder how many people on the net throwing around righteous indignation about this are the same people who laugh when Stern or O&A or whomever else do similar "bad taste" bits that involve something about which they don't care.

I still mourn the loss of Mr. Tony on long car rides (and in my shower on my waterproof radio). You might know: how has Cowherd's ratings been? I can't imagine that people like him more than TK, but I also don't see the appeal of Jim Rome, and apparently he's doing ok.

Not that I listen to Stern or O&A but aren't their "bad taste" bits supposed to be funny, rather than simply derogatory?

I used to listen to Cowherd for a little while after Mr. Tony's show went off. I'm a football fan but his show is a little too-football centric. And he can't hold Mr. Tony's jock.

And it's funny when a 38-year old wrestler dies it's steroids and its dismissed as nothing. But when young athletes die from heart conditions like Eddy died from it's a tragedy.

Thank goodness here locally they cut him off after the first after and replace him with local sports talk.
