Voter turnout has been low...for the past 2004 federal election, just over 60% of Canadians cast their votes...and in the American election, just over 55% of registered voters hit the polls.
American statistics found HERE (infoplease.com), and Canadian stats found HERE (nodice.ca)...these aren't official results, but you get the idea.
So, the question I pose to the group of W...do you vote? If so and if not...why?
Throwing my opinion in...I try to vote in every municipal and provinical election...but I'm not as thorough in federal elections.
And a supplimentary question: what can be done to boost numbers? Seeing these low numbers for elections should mean someone's doing something wrong....

Ditto me, except it's since 1991.

I'm just 21, but I've voted whenever possible. Last year, the incumbent mayor of our town was beaten by one vote. Things like that are why I vote. And, ya know, its my duty and such.
I turned 18 in '03, and during the next year we had municipal, provincial & federal elections. I didn't vote in the local one, but I made sure I voted in the other two.

I didnt vote when they recalled our governor & Arnold was voted in. I didnt really like ANY of the choices, so I couldnt bring myself to pick one.
There's a "special election" next week because Arnold put up all of these propositions that are supposed to shake things up. Most of them are considered anti-teacher by most teachers (Especially all of the ones I know, including my wife, and the ones on TV crying about them). I'm really only gonna vote here because my wife has demanded that I help shoot these things down, but I probably wouldnt otherwise.
Those TV ads for/against these kooky props are so misleading, and I hate the way they're always aimed at the lowest denominator. For example, the tagline for one of them is "Hey, Sacramento is pretty screwed up. So anything that's gonna change things, I'M FOR." And another one says "The *legislators* are against this, so I'm deffinitely FOR it". What kind of shit is that? That's just so insulting. Whatever happened to "This is what this prop will do, and here's why you should vote for it." [/rant]
So yeah, I usually vote. But there are a few cases where I havent because I didnt like any of the choices, or I felt both sides were too misleading for me to choose one. Sorry pieman.
Aussies HAVE to vote. I haven't missed one. Technically, you have to turn up at a booth, get your name checked off and get the ballot paper. Then you can do whatever you like with it. I think if you're forced to go along, it doesn't take that long to put 1 - 10 numbers in little boxes.

Wait wait wait. Are you saying you have instant run off (preferential) voting? If so, that's so cool.
I voted, though I don't know why. I'm sure the Libertarian party appreciated my vote, but it didn't affect anything otherwise.
In the real world, WWE believes that no matter what our race, religious creed or ethnic background in America, we all share the common bond of being Americans. American-Arabs are a part of the fabric of America, and they should be embraced by all of us.

Same here - except it's 76 for me. Definitely your duty - and also to have a half-assed idea of who is running. It doesn't take that much.
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

As for me, ever since I was eligible (in 1999), but only in state and federal elections. I just don't pay enough attention to local affairs to vote in an informed manner.
I've been voting since '76 as well. I'm sure that I have probably missed some local ones, but I have voted in every national and most local since I turned 18.
I think the people who don't vote wouldn't bother to take the time to post that they don't. And they probably wouldn't be in here discussing issues if they were apathetic enough to not vote.
And yes, I have vote(not just every four years like most young people).
Doesn't matter which level, I vote. I don't just vote either, I teach people the theory behind the political system, current events, and who stands for what. I've studied political theory for awhile, so that part is fun. But voting is voting, and I vote for a simple reason;
November 11th. Period.
When we've been here ten thousand years... Bright shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise... Then when we've first begun.
I don't see the point, unless it's some symbolic gesture. I voted for the first time in 2004, and unless there is a local issue which raises my ire, I don't plan on making it a habit. Voting Democrat or Republican, to me, might as well be compared to someone putting a gun to the back of my head on the highest ledge of the Sears Tower. Either way, I get screwed. And as long as this country is more about the unum and less about the pluburis voting 3rd party futile as futile gets.
You can call it apathy, stupidity, whatever you like; I think alot of us are realistic but fed-up, and know when to admit defete.
First voted in 1974. I agreed it is a duty but more than that, I view it as something precious not to be squandered. But, if you are uninformed/ignorant or simply vote party line regardless of who it is, I would prefer you stayed home.

I don't know about you, but everytime I hear Arnold say "big government labour unions", I want to kick in my TV .
Anyway. I've voted in every election since 1992.

Same here since 1980 and almost every vote has been for the right side of the ticket
Looks like Jo Dee Messina wants to fight Gretchen Wilson for Shelby Lynne's old seat at the end of the bar down at the Last Call Bar & Grill.....

Same here, except 1988. Too many people fought too long, too hard and sacrificed too much for the right to vote for me to justify not voting (at least to myself).

I think the last thing I bought online was 2 DVDs: Fully Loaded 2000 and Wrestlemania X-7. I'm trying to get a complete copy of Snow Brothers for NES and failing miserably.
