Man, so here I am letting my hair grow out for the first time in my life and I have no idea what to do. The front is pretty okay, but the back worries me. I'm trying to stay away from mulletishness.
Tips/advice?

In college, I did liet it get shoulder length, but cut it a few months later.
My advice would be to go to a stylist and they can walk you through the stages by keeping you groomed in the interim.
Does that mean there are actually defined stages to growing out one's hair?

No way. Unless you want to be in mullet country, you're going to need a couple haircuts along the way. You can have a stylist do it so that it grows out more evenly, or you can just keep getting the back trimmed until the front catches up with it. There's no set rule, just as soon as you think you look stupid, get the back done.
Been wearing a virtual crewcut for the last, oh, 15 years. So I am always telling my daughter that I used to have long hair (a little, actually, like shoulder length). So she goes - "bet you won't even grow your hair until Christmas" So I bit.
It's over (most) of my ears. Down near my eyebrows in the front. Touching my collar in back.
I have permission to get thinning and even-ing out every once in awhile. I have to. My hair isn't silky smooth and touchable like CRZ's - it's nutty thick. So I advise all of it at the same general length, thin out underneath from time to time - and wash and comb a lot.
January 1st - back to the 5-2 cut. Can't wait.
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

It's the same deal with my hair. It's not overly curly, but has a certain texture and body to it that just prevents it from looking even halfway decent once it gets past a certain length. Like others said, the best bet is to see a stylist. Not everyone can grow it out as easily and make it look good.
...
...wait.

Let's just pretend I DIDN'T just get a mental image of a scowling old grappler stroking CRZ's hair while the latter purred like a kitten.
See mine is extremely curly, I had it long for 8 years but it became too much, decided this August to cut it. When I kept it up, it did attract attention from the opposite sex when I wore it out. But if I didn't comb it for 20 minutes a day, or if I slept with my ponytail in, I quickly morphed into Rob Zombie circa 1995.
I got about 8 natural dreads in my dresser I've collected over the years. Figure I could sell em on ebay, or use em for a hair transplant when I start thinning.
Have a containment device handy at all times especially at the akward lenghts (bandanna, hat, elastic if it will pull back) so that your hair isn't constantly getting in your eyes, mouth, etc. If you don't do this you're much more likely to chop it off before it really gets a chance to grow.
When you absolutely can not avoid getting a trim, TALK with the stylist (and yes, go to someplace that deals with long hair, not the local barber shop, and be prepared to pay the extra few bucks for a "long hair" charge) and let them know that you're trying to grow it out and you only want to take off as much as needs to be done to clean up your apperance in the process. If you have particular areas that are driving you crazy, TELL THEM. If you just assume that they will know what to do, you'll probably end up sorry.
According to the bum at Subway, the real trick to growing your hair out is keeping it wet... but that's unsolicited hair growing advice from a guy on a bike looking for change.
Back in the days before I began to shave my head, the one thing that I could always count on was that my hair would grow to a certain length and then just stop. So, figure out how long you want the front, and let it get about 1/3 the way there, and then let the back start growing out. Additionally, TAKE CARE OF YOUR HAIR, buy all the girly shampoo, and conditioner and even the occasional HOT OIL treatment. The better you take care of you hair, the better it will look. Sounds simple, but you would be amazed how many people with crappy looking hair never do the simple things like condition it.
When I had my long hair, I didn't bother trimming it. My advice would be do the same and if you temporarily have a mullet, embrace it. Be one with the mullet. It will serve you well, especially during the winter months.
Back before I started shaving my head, I grew my hair long, but I always tried get occasional trims around my ears. I disliked having hair longer than my ears.
Interesting timing with this subject; I've decided to retire my head shaving razor, and taken a dare on seeing how long my hair can grow in a year.
I doubt I'll make it past January, but I like a challenge :-)
I used to have hair that was considered "long"... Now, I keep it very short all the time.
Last year, I let it go for about 6 months, but I have this curly problem, especially on the sides. I went out one night with friends and when I arrived at the bar, everyone gave me a new nickname...
"Krusty"....
If I were to grow it out again, I would need to keep up maintenance on the sides to avoid the Krusty references...

Originally posted by The GoonFunny, I'm doing the same thing. It also helps that I'm in a leg cast so I won't be going to the barber for a couple of months.
Wow...the barbers in Canada sure do things differently.
And add me to the brigade of "folks that used to shave their heads but are now growing it out." I get the sides/back trimmed up every once in a while because that grows faster than the top and gets REALLY thick.
