College basketball starts tonight! (Well, at least the official start of practice is tonight.)

Thanks to a change in NCAA rules, teams can actually begin practice before midnight (around 9:00 local time I think).

The University of Kentucky Wildcats are holding Big Blue Madness in Rupp Arena this year (for the first time ever) and gave away over 23,000 tickets in less than one hour.

The 'Cats have to find replacements for Chuck Hayes and Kelenna Azubuike, and they need to hear from the NCAA to find out if/when Randolph Morriss will be eligible and how much of a suspension he'll have due to his failure to remove his name from June's NBA draft.

JUCO transfer Rekalin Sims is expected to fill some of the Hayes void and a healthy Sheray Thomas is expected to be an added bonus to the front court. Sophomore Joe Crawford and junior Bobby Perry will be expected to cover Azubuike's departure.

As a fan of a team that was a double OT loss away from the final 4 last year - I'm psyched!

So, what does your team do for "midnight" madness? What are your prospects for this season?

GO BIG BLUE

Prepare for NCAA sanctions! (Ba-dum-bump. Thank you Chris Webber.)

Actually, I'm rather optimistic about the Wolverines chances in the Big Ten this year despite its recent "ownage" of the basement. They have an experienced starting five (4 seniors and 1 junior) who, if they can avoid injury, could make a run for the top three in the conference. UM's best athlete and most explosive player, Brent Petway, was declared academically ineligble for the first semester, but I'm hoping he can make an immediate impact when the conference schedule begins in January.

And that's about as much as you'll hear of Michigan basketball for the entire season. Eh, just rooting against MSU will give me enough impetus to watch this season.

Washington's not having Mdnight Madness last year. They said they would have had it last year because they had a much more veteran-team, but with all the young guys they are bringing in they want to keep it low-key.

The Huskies aren't going anywhere this year, though. I doubt they'll play #1-seed-well, but I'd expect them to be a solid top-20 team, potenitally better if Brandon Roy turns into the guy we all thought he would be and Jon Brockman (picked the Huskies over Duke...DUKE!) can be the stud they need down low.

Everybody's giving the Huskies love now because Spencer Hawes of Seattle Prep picked them over UNC for next year, and it makes me dizzy thinking about them being BETTER than they've been the last couple of years.

Coach Stallings doesn't believe in midnight madness for some reason...instead we're having some 'Commodore fan day' or something in two weeks with autographs (yippeee) and an abbreviated scrimmage. Isn't UK's thingy gonna be on ESPN2 or something tonight??

Rusty, do you follow recruiting at all?? One of us should have some pretty BIG news here in a couple of weeks.

We may be on ESPN, but I know I have "local" coverage as well, so all is good. I will stay up and watch it, but I'm hoping that ESPN will do me good.

I follow the hell out of recruiting, but most of it is unreliable message board stuff from guys with "sources". From what I read, the big news is likely to be a 'Cat, but there is paranoia that dUKe may edge in. But, the "big news" does play HS ball with the son of a certain SEC coach, so I'm thinking you're liking your chances there as well.

We've already had verbals from 2 top-35 guards as well as another guard that isn't ranked because he doesn't do the AAU thing and used to concentrate on football.

JayJay - You guys have a COACH. Dude is flat out recruiting, you should have some real talent coming in there on a routine basis. In addition to Hawes, you have a pretty good guard (Oliver, I believe) coming from Modesto Christian (Chuck Hayes' alma mater).

I know. According to rivals.com, the guys from the 2005 recruiting class were three four-star and two three-star guys, and that doesn't include five-star Martell Webster, who ultimately went to the NBA instead. They've got Hawes at five-stars for at least one year (thank you, David Stern and Billy Hunter), Oliver who they have at three-stars and two other four-star guys. Not to mention ex-Florida Gator (and local boy) Ryan Appleby is coming in to play the point.

One of the three-star guys from last year is a seven-footer, who I'd imagine will improve just going against Hawees next year.

Romar is getting mad props for getting the local guys to quit leaving for the Kansases and ESPECIALLY Arizonas of the world. The high school talent-level around here has gotten pretty amazing.

I think it's hilarous that the UK fans on the message boards are almost in denial that they could lose a recruit of his caliber to Vandy...that being said, I'll be honest with you...I'm 99% sure it's between UK and Vandy. I'm hearing things 'round here. That Greg Hoover fella on the Rivals board sure is confident that it's definitely UK though...

But anywhoo, since I'm off topic now, I'll just get back on topic and say that I wish we had MM tonight.

One more question...Do you think Rondo, Bradley and Crawford are the second coming of the father, the son, and the holy spirit like a bunch of UK fans seem to think?? I know Rondo's the shit, but I haven't seen Crawford do much of anything yet, but I did see a little potential in Bradley. admittedly, I didn't see EVERY UK game last year...but Crawfords stats aren't all that great.

Can't wait to get this season going...

Rondo is a jumper away from being an NBA superstar.

He played great at the U-21 World Games this year. Super defensive presence, lots of steals, faster than fast, and is a charismatic leader.

Bradley is going to be a STUD. Fearless. Fast. Many are calling for him to replace Sparks at the 2 this year. Most have him pencilled in to take over without much of a drop off when Rondo goes NBA. He earned a lot of love when he got in Bogut's face last year in the Sweet 16 game. Big problem with him is concussions. He took a few spills last year that rattled his coconut. But, he exudes confidence and brings energy - hence the Bradley love.

Crawford has potential. He had a super game against LSU in last year's SEC tournament. Many feel that he'll replace Azubuike's minutes and production at the 3 this year. One reason the masses love him is his McD AA pedigree. Last year, he struggled learning his role. The potential is there, he just has to find it.

Sorry fellas, but the Title's not leaving the ACC this year

Actually, gossip in the Triangle hasn't ramped up enough for me to hear it in Alabama yet, so I don't really know how any of those teams stand. What I do know is I am definitely looking forward to catching "The fastest 40 minutes of Basketball" this season at UAB. They really impressed me in the tourney last year.

Come on Jag...

As a UNC fan, I'm assuming that you hate dUKe as well. I just can't see Roy doing much this year (other than the incredible job of recruiting that he is doing) having lost 4 lottery picks and 3 other high contributors.

I guess you're liking Wake.....

Hopefully, an 0-27 season for Providence that might lead to the coach being dismissed. Of course, they bumped up season ticket prices 30% last season coming off an NCAA appearance and returning an All-American. Now, after losing Gomes and going under .500 last season with zero hope in a deeper and tougher Big East, season ticket prices stayed at the 30% up point. And they actually wondered why I gave up the tickets I've had since I was a kid. They'll really love me when the annual alumni donation becomes a permanent zero until the coach is fired/hung. Bob Huggins is available, I mean, his players get arrested and don't graduate, but at least he gets to the NCAA Tourney consistently, unlike Tim Welsh, whose players don't graduate and get arrested, but rarely makes the NCAA Tourney.

Over the past few years, I just haven't been able to get into UK and therefore, college B-Ball until after the Seahawks season ends (which has been later that it had been, but still earlier than it should be). It certainly hasn't had anything to do with the UK football team (ugh).

I am looking forward to Big Mondays on ESPN this year as the new Big East should be AWESOME. I loathe Pitino and Louisville, but can't wait until their matchup with West Virginia. After last year's tournament game and yesterday's collapse by the football team, there's going to be blood on that court. Pitsnoggle!
