Post your best anti-Yankee rant here.

I had a ball watching tonight's matchup, since I think that the Angels are like the old, late-90's Yankees. An old catcher as manager, a dominant closer, a solid but not really star-studded rotation, an outfielder who's been with the team forever, and a roster full of young guns, free agent pickups and veterans who want to win.

The difference is that I feel good in cheering for the Angels since they don't have all of that obnoxious NYY baggage. I also feel good in cheering for a team with heart, since it's clear that A-Rod and the rest of the hired guns' corrosive influence has rubbed off on the rest of the Yankees. Torre will be fired, Cashman will be fired, and plenty of players will be turned over.

On the flip side, congrats to ABC for hiring Tim McGraw to tailor the lyrics to "I like it, I love it" for every halftime highlight show throughout the "Monday Night Football" season. Just last week, my buddy House and I were discussing Cosell's classic highlight narratives in the '70s, and how nobody had approached them since, and I told House, "Only one thing could ever come close, and I know it's a long shot, but what if ABC hired Tim McGraw to tailor the lyrics to 'I Like it, I Love It' for each week of NFL highlights throughout the season?" And wouldn't you know, it happened! See, dreams can come true. --- Bill Simmons, www.sportsguy.net

Pick your favorite moment from Game 5:

-Gary Sheffield and Bubba Crosby collide in the outfield, allowing Adam Kennedy to come out with a 2-RBI triple.
-Robinson Cano gets called out for running inside the baseline, killing a potential two-out rally.
-Big Money Superstar A-Rod once again blows it when it counts. When he had a chance to tie it with a home run in the 9th when it counted, he instead hits into a double play.

Say what you will about Tony Graffenino doing his best Bill Buckner impression, nothing's going to top Crosby and Sheffield crashing into each other as this postseason's big lowlight.

I'll admit that I got really worried when Colon came out in the 2nd, but once Santana got through the 2nd, he dominated. But the Angels can never be content with an easy victory, so they've got to make things suspenseful. I was biting my nails through that entire 9th inning, especially when Matsui was batting as the potential go-ahead run.

The Angels pull it off, but COME ON! Are you telling me that after traveling to Anaheim on Sunday night and playing an exhausting fifth game on Monday night, they immediately have to fly all the way over to Chicago where the fatigued staff will have to face a RESTED buzzsaw in Jose Contreras (who hasn't lost since August, mind you) the very next day? Seriously, is forfeiting an option?

EDIT: And upon further thought, there IS in fact a moral to this story. Once again (and I know I said this last year), money doesn't buy championships. But never has it rang truer than this year. The Yankees wouldn't have even reached this point if it hadn't been for the brilliant play of Shawn Chacon, Aaron Small, Chien-Mang Wang, and Robinson Cano to completely save their season. Without them, the Yankees might have even finished under .500 and COMBINED these guys make less than ________ (Take your pick to fill in the blank: Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown, Jaret Wright, Alex Rodriguez, the list goes on here). Anyone think The Boss will take that into consideration this offseason?

And you thought selling Amway was his career lowlight?

Ah yes, the poor, poor Angels. With only the third highest payroll in the American League. I am glad they were able to get by with only 98 Million in payroll. I wonder if they were able to cater before games, or if they made the players bring a bag lunch each day.

They beat the Yankees, who's pitching has been suspect most of the season, who had to fight and claw their way to the East crown, who had to make due with castoffs pitching for them on a regular basis.

No money cant buy titles, but eliminate the payroll of the ones who didnt contribute this season, and what the Angels spent and the Yankees spent isnt that far apart. The yankees spent nearly 40 MILLION on pitchers who were injurred most of the season.

Either way, LA outplayed them. No doubt about it.

Yankees: $200 million (conservative estimate)
Angels: $98 million (your own words)

Even without the $40 million you referenced, there's still a $62 million gap between the two teams, at least.

Seriously, I am soooo happy to see this team gone, what with their $120 million plus payroll, bitchy players and obnoxious “pay-attention-to-us” fans. Hopefully, we can go six months without hearing about all the offseason moves the team makes while smaller market teams go overlooked. Thank heavens the media will now acknowledge BOTH teams playing in the World Series.

…..And I’m glad the Yankees are gone, too.

Sadly, I can see the media and the public not giving a crap about what teams are in the World Series anymore.

The best outcome ratings wise would be to have the White Sox in the series, but the media really needs to start playing up "1917". Come on White Sox fans! You need to start complaining as much as Red Sox fans used to, and feel as helpless as Cubs fans always too! I don't need that as a mean spirited jab, but it seems the plight of the White Sox is really overlooked, and it's a story that will draw.

I'm sure MLB, from a ratings standpoint is upset that neither Boston or NY are in it , as they draw. Hell, people will even watch the Yankees games just to see them lose.

Our manager put it best "there haven't been curses, just 88 years of horseshit teams."

Sadly for Fox and the rest of the national media, neither the White Sox organization nor their fanbase have any interest in creating a "Curse of Shoeless Joe" or in becoming a "Nation" like the other Sox team or any of that. We are doing what we've done for 88 years now. Rooting for team and hoping this is the year. If you're with us, you're with us. If you're not, you're dead. No one else matters.

Any consternation that ESPN/FOX/anyone else is feeling though is their own fault. They've spent the past 3 years pushing the idea that all that matters in baseball, especially the AL is the Yankees vs. the Red Sox, and now they have to deal with the fact that hype alone doesn't decide who wins in the playoffs. Maybe if every week it wasn't some combination of Yankees/Red Sox/Cubs on the Fox Saturday game the country would be more interested in these other teams. But when during August I saw a barely .500 Cubs team play every single Saturday on a nationally televised game, I guess I understand why now Fox has to do some work to get people to buy into the other team in Chicago.

The manager then played on numerous horseshit teams.
Why FOX focused on the Cubs, Yankees and Red Sox the past few years: Because in the 2003 NLCS/ALCS and '04 ALCS FOX was getting ratings that were out of the 1970's. I'd love if the Red Sox were never on FOX or ESPN during the regular season, as it would allow me to not have to hear the 'wit and wisdom' of the McCarver's and Morgan's of the world. When the White Sox are the #2 team in their own city, why should they be considered a team to broadcast nationally, especially when, until this season, they were the poster children for mediocrity?

As for the first part, I have no doubt Ozzie would agree completely with that statement.

As for the rest of your statement, the "mediocrity" argument would hold more water if the Cubs weren't on national tv as much as they are, considering they have had one solid team in the last 15 years. As for being the #2 team in the city...

"Never pick a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel." - AJ Liebling

Go do a search on the Tribune company holdings. The White Sox were never the #2 team in this city by any objective measure until the 1-2 punch of WGN Superstation and the Chicago Tribune started to market the team and their falling-down ballpark as a holy experience and the most fun place on earth to spend a day. All the while smearing the White Sox at any opportunity (doubt me? The headline on the front page of the Chicago Tribune the day before Game 1 of this year's ALDS was about how much poverty is around US Celluar Field and what bad neighbors the White Sox are) has led to the Cubs becoming what the media wanted them to become. Which is how you end up with things like ESPN headquartering their 2003 All-Star game coverage at Wrigley Field...when the game was at US Cellular Field.

Or look at this year's coverage. Major media outlets are leading off stories by asking if anyone is going to care about this year's ALCS. Great way to build interest guys. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That said, I think we can all agree on disliking Morgan and McCarver ;)

Ah, spoken as a bitter Southsider:-)

I do so love the Sox fans and their cross bearing.

A strict constructionist interprets the Constitution according to the language and original intent of the text at the time of its writing, in much the same way as a fundamentalist views the Bible. Fortunately, for strict constructionists, they have been endowed by God with the superhuman gift of being able to read the minds of people who died 200 years ago. Naturally, they use this power only for good -

ScottChrist, I certainly won't argue that Milton should definitely be there. It's easy to leave a guy out when his ERA is that high, regardless of his record. The omission of Abreu, though, I'll continue to believe is downright criminal.
