OK - I saw the flick, and the only thing I can think about it is:

Are Joey and Richie Cusack supposed to be Jewish?

Any other opinions out there?

Pros: Cusask - ethnically ambiguous. Richie mentions that Joey fucked Jill Levy on a pool table at the bar in the old neighborhood. Really though, it's mostly that Richie acts 100% Jewish. For anyone who's not an East Coast Jew, it might be hard to pick up on, but for those of us who are, it's obvious. The speech patterns, the body language, the attitude, everything. Even "Brohim" seems somewhat like a Jewish nickname for "Bro" for some reason. Maybe it's because "im" is the Hebrew masculine plural suffix.

Cons: Joey Cusack wears a cross through the whole movie - but of course, that's not really "Joey Cusack" who's wearing it. The typical Jewish mobster portrayal in the movies is more basically Ace Rothstien in Casino, not Joe Pesci in Goodfellas, which is who Joey Cusack was supposed to be like.

Mostly, it's the "fucked Jill Levy" line, which is a completely unnessesary throwaway line. And we know that there's no such thing as a throwaway line in the movies - screen time is just too valuable. It seems like the directors put that in there for a reason, and I can't think of any other one than to convey to the audience that the Cusack's old neighborhood was Jewish, and by extension, the Cussack are Members of the Tribe.

Saw it last night. I guess they could be, but I never really gave it much thought. I'm gonna go read the Graphic Novel sometime this week, so I'll get back to you with any information on that.

I really liked the movie. At first I was unsure, because I only vaguely knew the plot thanks to the trailers, and treated it like some dangerous animal that was going to turn on me at any second. But once I started to get to know the characters, the pacing picked up and I enjoyed the ride.

I did think the first sex scene felt somewhat out of place, but it actually helped develop the characters for later and wasn't just completely random.

The new Doctor Who series is being broadcast on the CBC and there aren't even any rumours of a US broadcast partner, let alone a schedule for showing the episodes. Is there anyone who can help me out?
