They did Sunday Night Heat as the pre-show. That's good, because I always liked the Heat pre-shows. And the 30-minute version is way more tolerable than the hour long version which dragged easily.

William Regal & Paul Burchill d. Paul London & Brian Kendrick in the Heat match (about 4 or 5 minutes). Well, this should kick ass. Short, but a heck of a little match while it lasted. Despite none of these guys ever being used on television, the crowd was totally into it, as these guys worked hard. Cool spot where London dropkicked Burchill and landed a moonsault on Regal. London tried a moonsault, but Regal & Burchill caught him (botched, as Regal totally dropped him, but whatever) and Burchill hit a slam. Spanky then flew outside with Burchill, and Regal applied the stretch for the win. Y'know, if WWE cared about tag teams, they COULD have a hell of a division. Unfortunatley... they don't care.

I should note that I am less excited about this PPV than I have been any PPV in YEARS. Thank god for TNA, because I'm totally excited about Bound For Glory.

Legion of Doom d. MNM (6:24). I think MNM opens up EVERY SmackDown PPV. These two teams have worked so much with each other over the past 3 months that they have a chemistry with each other. A fine match, which was mainly MNM working over Animal. Melina tagged in to go after Animal, but he caught her and tagged in Christy. They hit the Hart Attack, Christy gave Melina the worst hurricanrana ever, and they then hit Melina with the Doomsday Device for the pin. Crowd was really in to the match. Unfortunatley, MNM lost yet again.

Eddie & Batista had a confrontation backstage. They teased Eddie going more heelish tonight.

Bobby Lashley d. Simon Dean (1:55) Dean said if he didn't beat Lashley then he would eat 20 double cheeseburgers. Drama. Dean hit Lashley in the head with the hamburger tray, but he no-sold, then hit an inverted power slam for the win. Basic squash. Bobby then shoved a cheeseburger in Dean's face.

Rey interrupted a JBL promo. He gave him a Rey mask. He didn't want it, so he gave it to mole-girl. Why are they still making poor Jillian Hall do that dumb fucking gimmick?

Chris Benoit d. Orlando Jordan, Booker T, and Christian to retain the United States Title (about 10:00). Benoit got a HYOOGE reaction. Benoit won with a sharpshooter on Christian. Solid match that was all action. But it could have used an extra 5 minutes or so, and I am saddened that Christian was the one who did the job. Sharmell yelled at Booker afterwards.

Bobby Lashley is making Simon Dean eat cheeseburgers.

KEN KENNEDY (~!) d. Hardcore Holly (8:50). Kennedy introduced himself with an old-time microphone that dropped from the ceiling. Okay, that is just genious. Okay match. Kennedy won with his finisher. Sylvan Grenier came out and attacked Holly after the match. Wow, what a shitty, shitty, god have mercy on us shitty feud that could be.

Simon Dean is still eating burgers. They will probably do a vomit angle later, and it will be just as not funny as it was the first billion times they did it.

Sharmell was still yelling at Booker T backstage. Kennedy interrupted to gloat for no real reason, but he's awesome so whatever. Sharmell then finished up yelling.

John Bradshaw Layfield d. Rey Mysterio (13:19). Good match. Finish came when Rey went for the 619, but JBL got out of the way, then hit Rey with the Clothesline From Hell. The ending was actually really great in execution.

Randy Orton & Bob Orton d. Undertaker in a casket match (19:10). Suprisingly good match. Taker had Bob in the casket, but he popped out and sprayed Taker with a fire extinguisher. Randy hit the RKO. Taker sat up, so Randy hit him with the fire extinguisher. Taker got up again and dragged Randy in the casket with him. Randy then whacked him with a chair and closed the lid for the win. Randy & Bob then set the casket on fire, setting up a buried alive match at Survivor Series. Nothing against either man, but I'm kinda' sick of the feud.

Juventud d. Nunzio to win the Cruiserweight Title (6:49). Both men seemed to have an off night, capped off by the fact that they had to wrestle a match under the cookie-cutter restraints of WWE. Juvi won with a pretty viscious looking Juvi Driver. The crowd was dead (WWE fans go to see TV stars and neither of these guys are ever on TV), but popped for the title change. Okay match, but not what you'd expect from these two. Hugo Savinovich interviewed them in spanish, which got over with the crowd.

Simon is still eating cheeseburgers. He then, indeed, threw up. Okay then.

Batista d. Eddie Guerrero to retain World Title (18:30). Basic match. Eddie kept teasing using foreign objects, but then wouldn't, with the story being if Eddie had truly changed his ways or not. Batista got the clean win with the spine-buster. They shook hands afterwards, with Eddie's facials again teasing a future heel turn (which should happen soon considering they want to do this match at Survivor Series). Good, but not great match.

Overall, an average show. None of the matches were bad, but most were average and nothing was great. It mainly seemed to be a buffer show between SummerSlam and Survivor Series. And I doubt I'll remember a single thing that happened come tomorrow night.

Thumbs in the middle.

The answer to WWE's financial problems...

Never 'Wiener of the Day', and is actually quite bitter about it.

He's been doing that for the last 3 weeks or so.

I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, but WWE could, if they chose to, have one hell of a cruiserweight division and a tag-team division. They're simply choosing not to, and I think that's a damn shame. If I were in charge I'd have an entire small writing staff dedicated to each of those divisions.

Will someone who is simply dying to be in the next Midnight Express, Rock ‘N’ Roll Express, The Fabs, L.O.D., The Horsemen, the Andersons, etc., please raise their hands? The tag-team scene in this business continues to be a lost art. What’s the deal?

Jim Ross continues to blame the wrestlers themselves. I'm sure that Antonio & Romeo couldn't get over because of personal problems on their part, instead of, say, because they have an ultra-lame gimmick.

Why would RAW run-in? They "won" the brawl on Monday. The onus is on Smackdown to continue the feud, not RAW.

Well, if you watched the post-Raw internet thing, you saw that Raw won. If you didn't, Raw ended while the brawl was ongoing, with the outcome in doubt.

Antonio and Romeo not getting over isn't just because of the gimmick. It's also because they're not good.

Midnight Express, Rock ‘N’ Roll Express, The Fabs, L.O.D., The Horsemen, the Andersons...
Which of these guys wrestled in WWF?
Which of these teams were booked well in WWF?
When has the WWF cared about tag team wrestling?

I'm thinking Argentina Rocca and Miguel Perrez Jr. in the fifties and then...nothing after that.

WWF and tag teams? Well of that list you have the Brainbusters Arn and Tully. LOD had a very strong run. And of course if you are talking about tag wrestling in general the great E&C, Hardyz, Acolytes, Dudleyz, and even 2nd rate teams like Head Cheese TNA, etc. that was a good division.

As far as Tag Teams, I believe the early 80s was a pretty good time for the WWF as well. If not for Tag Teams, Lou Albano would have been unemployed.

That I don't remember. It would make more sense to expect it then. But still, I think it's Smackdown's job to retaliate, not RAW's.

I didn't watch the WWE.com thing, however, during Eddie's segment with Batista last week, they showed video of Smackdown's retreat with Eddie "protecting" Batista on the way up the ramp.

There's a sweet picture of Kennedy doing the announcer schtick on WWE.com's No Mercy photo gallery (wwe.com).

Supposedly Bischoff's dislike of tag team wrestling may be down to the huge lack of continuity in that department.

I know he did something on the lines of stopping tag team contests in WCW, but I think it was more than just an angle.

It just seems to be pick out 2 names at random than guys that seem to go well together.

The Hurricane teamed with Kane and Rosey, absolutely no real understanding of that.

Put Val Venis and Viscera together only because their personas like the ladies, otherwise you are left thinking of a link !

You forgot a few good WWE teams:

Brainbusters, Beefcake and Valentine, Hart Foundation (How could you forget the Hart Foundation? THE HART FOUNDATION!), Demolition, The Rockers (I hated them but they were big), Rhythm and Blues (Honky and Valentine) and LOD were in the WWF for a while too.
I'm also sure I'm forgetting a few teams I enjoyed but have forgotten over the years.

The spotlight part added to the old-school mic from the ceiling a'la MSG is a beautiful piece of icing. And we back here in Titletown LOVE how Kenny gets HYOOOOGE heat for being from Green Bay, WI.

(Except, of course, that we watched No Mercy at the same bar that hosts some of our shows, including Ken's last ACW-NWA WI match just 7 months ago...and his hometown got a pop here.)

Go figure. :-)

If you've watched old ECW, you know Heyman's style of booking compared to Stephanie's writing. Stephanie's big angle was the Gay Wedding. Just take a look at Smackdown pre-Heyman and post-Heyman, its night and day.
