Welcome back NHL....

It was a great night last night.

In watching the games last night, I noticed a couple of interesting things from the rule changes...

1. Love the 2-line pass... So many open opportunities from those. Most interesting is the Goalies trying to make big passes down the ice.

2. Icing... Didn't know that rule about not being able to make a line change when you ice the puck. I don't know if that is the reason, but there were not many icing calls in the Leafs-Sens game last night.

3. Again, it may have only been the Leafs-Sens game, which I concentrated on, but neither team was shooting the puck enough. I saw some highlights of long shots that were going in. I think some of that can be attributed to the smaller goalie equipment.

On the power play especially, shoot the puck at the net. Greater chance of going in now than before.

4> Shootout...

I thought it was a pretty good way to end the game. I will say this, some teams will benefit from it greatly.

For example, Ottawa. What a lineup to put out for the shootout. A-Alfredsson, B-Havlat, C-Heatley. If you need to change it up, you have Spezza, Bochenski, Smolinski...

On the other hand, the Leafs (without Sundin) put out Allison, Lindros and O'Neill. Not going to win much with that group....

If I was Ottawa, I would play for the tie in OT all the time, so that I can go into a shootout. The Leafs should do all in their power to try not to get into the SO....

All in all, a fine first night back!!!

I wish I could have watched some hockey last night. I was surprised that there wasn't a special week-night Hockey Night in Canada, but what with the CBC lockout and all, I guess it's not so surprising.

Talking about the new rules with some folks after they were announced over the summer I remember saying that the new "no line-change if you ice the puck" would be the sleeper rule that would surprise people as to how it changed the game. I wonder now, though, whether we'll see players get smart and a) get good at icing the puck at the net and/or b) get good at "lagging" a slow one up the ice so there's time to change at least some players before the whistle is actually blown.

Shootouts are surely going to be interesting. Historically, going all the way back to the days of the Original Six teams (and thus before equipment got really big), goalies have held the advantage in penalty shots. Once the goalies adjust to the new equipment I suspect you'll see that advantage continue.

That said, Ottawa certainly does have a near perfect shootout team, but it's not just having Alfredsson & co. shooting, it's having freakin' Dominek Hasek in nets. Hasek also has years of international experience, so shootouts are nothing new for him.

Any AMERICAN fans catch the game on OLN? I missed it but the post game show was okay. Gary Clement was fabulous as always. But the set reminded me of 1989 era ESPN. But, ugly hockey programs are better than no hockey at all.

I saw about 8 minutes of the third period on the replay on OLN before going to bed. I wasn't completely horrified by anything that I saw, but the announcers were not so good. The video feed seemed lower quality than what we used to get but it may just be where the hard cameras were at that arena.

I'll watch again.

In the USA, you also have the option of watching various local Fox Sports channels, no?

Pretty much, yeah.

All the NHL teams (as most major sports teams) have their games aired by their respective regional Fox Sports Network.

Here in Los Angeles we have two FS (FSN West and FSN West 2). FSNW broadcasts Kings, Clippers and Angels and FSNW2 has Ducks, Lakers and Dodgers.

We got the Ducks game and the Kings game plus whatever ESPN felt like showing. So it was hockey all night in Los Angeles.

I was shocked to see no NHL on CBUT last night. Is that because of this "strike" you Canucks keep referencing or did the NHL switch networks in BC?

The CBC lockout's pretty much done, and Hockey Night in Canada's expected to debut as scheduled on Saturday night.

Oh, and the Flames completely FELL OVER on their way out of the starting blocks, getting molested by the Wild 6-3.

The NHL games in Canada last night were shown on TSN (Canada's ESPN). The Vancouver/Phoenix game was the late game on the network.

Three years ago, while watching a TSN feed of a game on Cox while in San Diego, I recall Guru Zim's revulsion/fascination with a Tim Horton's commercial promoting Bananaberry muffins.

Don't forget: those with Digital Cable or (most?) Satellite get many additional out of market games for no cost the first week as part of the Center Ice hockey package free trial.

Chicago only broadcasts the away games. You may have heard.

OLN is part of a premium package that includes WE, TRIO, Sundance Channel, Hallmark Movie Channel and IFC on my cable system - so opening night I was not able to watch my Rangers beat the Flyers because I am not paying $10 a month for that other crap.

Last night the Rangers were back on MSG locally and I got to see them lose to Montreal - I am certainly not discouraged at all by their play....

and who needs Marian when you have Marcel ?

The video feed on OLN really did look bad, especially compared to the Fox and TSN broadcasts I was scanning through.

Man, there were some long stretches of continuous play going on. I loved it. Faster pace, lots of action.

I still am not a fan of the shootout. I seem to be the only hockey fan on the planet to feel that way, but I do.

What the heck is John Kelly doing (announcing) in St Louis? They have the old Phoenix play-by-play guy doing Colorado's games now.

Can't wait for HNIC tomorrow night.

Did any of our Canucks brothers watch HNIC last night? What did Grapes say about the Gold Medal? I know the CBC web page used to archive Coaches' Corner, but haven't checked yet to see if they still do that.
