Well, it looks like it's going to happen. Here's something I read at wrestlingobserver.com:

--A few additions to our lead story in the next Observer regarding what is happening with the Raw announcing team. Mike Goldberg, the current UFC announcer, will not be doing the PPV tomorrow night after all. This has nothing to do with his negotiations with WWE, as he had a prior announcing conflict. Goldberg has friends who have appraised him of the situation he's walking into, as Goldberg has zero knowledge or past interest in pro wrestling, and had no idea what replacing Jim Ross entails, or working for Vince McMahon (he does now). Plus, as a legit sports announcer, it becomes difficult to get work in real sports as a top of the line guy when you are known as "the pro wrestling announcer." Craig Minervini did it and Tony Schiavone did, somewhat, so it's not impossible, but is difficult. However, he was offered a multi-year contract and according to those close to him, "insane" money. He told people in UFC that he would be taking the offer. He's leaving on great terms with UFC and he's very well respected there as he is very professional at announcing. As a broadcaster, he's ten stages better than the prior "know-nothing about wrestling" types like Todd Grisham, Steve Romero and Jonathan Coachman that the company has hired. Replacing Ross was based on when Goldberg signs. I don't know that he has signed the contract, and he could change his mind, and WWE could also change their minds, but from what I gather from both sides, that probably will not happen. As far as when the change would go into effect, it is imminent. If a contract is signed before Monday, it could be as soon as Monday or the following Monday. Ross will announce Raw on wwe.com once the change is made. Within wrestling, it's been virtually 100% that this move is crazy, and virtually none of them know Goldberg has never watched or followed wrestling. Those who know the real reasons only think it's even beyond that. Publicly, I'm sure WWE and likely Ross as a loyal company employee for public consumption will try and portray it as a move to boost people watching Raw on the internet, but that story has more holes than Swiss Cheese.

------

Why do they always go for people with no knowledge of wrestling? It's nice that they went and got a 'real announcer', but would it be THAT bad if they got someone who was a bit of a 'mark'? Do they assume there are 2 types of people: Guys who don't watch at all and guys that watch, post on chatrooms and look up Scott Keith to see if the match was any good? (........... cough)

By the way, Storm's gimmick includes 1.) telling the audience to shut up, and 2.) occasionally making everyone stand for the Canadian national anthem. You know they don't know what to do with a wrestler when he's making fans stand for a national anthem. It's like waving a white flag and saying, "This guy has no personality -- we give up."

I'm all for a major shakeup of the RAW announce team in almost any direction. I think Coach has done a fine job, but that may be because he's simply novel. The Lawler/Ross team, as I've mentioned before, is much too old for a company talking to the key male demographic. I'm 33, and either of those guys is at least 20 years older than me. I'd like to hear something new for the voice of RAW. I'd prefer, if I had my druthers, someone who can call the maneuver names, and this Goldberg doesn't sound like that guy. Then again, he might learn them. That's not quite so important a detail for me as someone who can simply sell the material better, with more than Oklahoma college schtick and leering crazy-uncle jokes.

If we have to have an older announce team, and with all the talk about legends in the WWE recently, there's no one but Lawler who can play the Hennan/Ventura role? Tell me Million Dollar Man wouldn't own that spot.

Maybe this is common knowledge, and I don't know this because I haven't been paying attention to these things lately, but what is Meltzer talking about when he mentions Raw being on wwe.com? Is it a webcast of the show or is it that extra backstage stuff they showed last week?

Anyway, I'd rather they replaced Lawler than Ross especially if the idea is to get someone who is more in tune with the younger audience, but I guess this has been a long time in the making.

I think it's Lawler who they should be replacing (unless they are) and not Ross.

RAW has had the same basic format for far too long (7/8 years), so it's definitely time to make a change. The announce team is a good first step, and I'm sure Goldberg will learn over time as Michael Cole and others did. I don't know how much previous experience others had before they broke in.

There is also a very real possibility that this Goldberg guy won't last or that the chemistry won't work. He could be another Craig DeGeorge and stick around for a bit then leave.

I have always been partial to replacing Lawler with Kevin Nash. I've never really felt that Ross NEEDED to go, because I have no idea who they'd replace them with, but apparently it's this guy.

You have no idea what you're talking about. They already tried DiBiase in the color role ten years ago on Superstars/Challenge and a few PPVs - and he was horrrrrrrrrrible™.

Too bad they couldn't pick up anyone from the indies to do the job. Some of them I've heard aren't too bad.

Yeah, Dibiase was pretty average as a color man. See Royal Rumble 94 if you need a proof.

I like Goldberg's announcing but I don't know how good he will do as a WRESTLING announcer. JR needs to go. He still know how to sell a match but he gets often confused. Goldberg will be a nice change of pace, even though I wish Joey Styles would get the gig.

I pretty much agree that I'm not sure about Goldberg as a wrestling announcer, he doesn't know any of the moves and do we really want Lawler doing that? I also think Lawler is the one who needs to be replaced. I think if you're going to hire Goldberg the thing to do is move Taz to Raw. Then Goldberg just has to put over the product and wrestlers while Taz can chime in with the names of the moves and color commentary.

That is the right idea...

I fear Goldberg in any sort of team with Lawler or Coach will be a mess only because nobody can speak up with the words "drop toe hold" and it will likely be called a LEG SISSOR TAKE DOWN! If we see a Goldberg, Coach, and Lawler team I see alot of name changes for moves on RAW and many things we have never heard before in our future - I don't know if that's a good thing (WWE does need change...) or a bad thing (I'm watching RAW, not UFC Fight Night...)

Oh God NO!

I've wanted Goldberg to be gone for some time from the UFC, he annoys the hell out of me.

But I would have kept him there if I could keep JR. At least JR has a passion for the business and a vast pool of knowledge.

Goldberg on the other hand seems like he always agrees with the last person he spoke with.

I know that most of you hate JR and the King as a team, but at least they worked the good guy/ psuedo bad guy angle well. When JR stood up for the faces, it sold very well, I just won't ever believe Goldberg.

I still can't believe JR broke out a Joe Stecher reference on RAW.

Let's face it- JR still has a lot of credibility with fans (at least this one)- if a match sucks, he's not afraid to call it "bowling shoe ugly." He gets genuinely excited about the product and gives important matches a big-match feel. I'm willing to overlook a couple of flubs now and then. That doesn't bother me. I just think its a shame he's getting replaced.

Guru- After being yanked around during the XFL broadcasts, I wonder how eager Matt would be to work with Vince again.

I don't mind Goldberg in UFC, but I can't stand Rogan. I hope they get a decent replacement for Goldberg or I'm going to have to watch UFC with the sound off. Anyone who has been watching UFC since the early years knows they've had some...interesting choices for announcers. I did like Blatnik's squeaky-voiced-teen-from-The-Simpsons-voice though, no foolin'.

Instead of replacing Ross, I'd rather they just swap either Lawler or Coachman with Tazz...the Tazz/Ross team isn't too bad. Would suck for Smackdown, but it's not like WWE cares about that factor at this point anyway.

I've never understood why people don't like Rogan in the UFC. He knows what he is talking about; he is a fan, he trains and occasionally rolls with some of the fighters.

Blatnik was okay, but I never felt he educated himself as well as he should have. Anybody is better than Jim Brown and those absolute fools they had on the first 5 or so!

EDIT: Joey Styles to Replace Goldberg at UFC

Wait wait wait... Mike Goldberg is replacing JR and JOEY STYLES could replace Goldberg? That's INSANE.

Man, Styles and Rogan would be a great duo. But, still, Styles would be the perfect replacement for JR.
