System Shock 2 nearly gave me a heart attack a few times. Very few games can make me dread progressing further like SS2 did.

Quickly off of the top of my head I would say one of the PS2 Resident Evil or Silent Hill games.

Resident Evil 2. It is the perfect blend of scary music and the nervousness that zombies would jump in out of nowhere. The part where the zombies hands break through the window in one of the corridors is the only scene in a video game that made me literally jump in my seat.

Special mention goes to the first Fatal Frame game.

Probably the GC remake of Resident Evil 1. But I have to give "Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare" for PSX and Dreamcast an honorable mention.

I've found other games creepier maybe, but Eternal Darkness is the only one that made me jump out of my seat.

The original RIDGE RACER. IT was my first PSone game, and it scared me, how fast I was going, and how fast it actually felt I was going. I seriously slowed down to keep my heartrate from going off the charts.

OK, so it's not scary, but it scared me how realistic it was.

Silent Hill.

It was the first game of that type that I'd ever played.

I popped it in and was playing it in the dark at about 2am and the damn sound effects were creepy as hell. That game should ONLY be played in the middle of the night with no other lights on and no background music playing other then what's in the game. It makes it a whole 'experience'.

Behold the "Wise" Words of Renegade Raine, the Bishounen Hunter:

When I was little, in Super Mario Bros. 2, there was this thing's mouth (or whatever...I could never tell what it was) that you had to go in at the end of each level. That thing scared me.

But in recent memory, Silent Hill, Manhunt, and Dino Crisis have all managed to creep me out somehow.

I recall playing Diablo often at night on my pc.
The lights were off. The sound was way up.
Sometimes it could be pretty creepy.

My mom was even more freaked out, hearing all these wails and screechy yells coming out of nowhere.

*sigh* Why bother?

Agreed on all points there. That game scared the hell out of me. Parasite Eve freaked me out in a "Ew, gross" kind of way.

Exactly what I think. Only with me it's the Licker crashing through the window in the observation room. After this I just could play on with the lights turned on:-).

There has never been anything like Resident Evil 2, atmosphere-wise.

I had recurring dreams/nightmares that involved me in the DOOM sphere, constantly running away from those ugly ball things that shot fireballs at me.

Fatal Frame. Jesus sakes, that was one game I shouldn't have been playing alone at midnight

Same for the first Silent Hill. The Fairy Tale Lizard, and the slurping noises he made as he ate you......ergh

You're going to laugh at me - Mortal Combat. That game really took a step up in terms of depicted violence. I remember the first time I saw Sub-Zero's fatality and someone told me that thing dangling down from the victim's head was his spine, I almost vomited.

Quake. My then-wife loved to watch me play the first-person shooters, and she'd shriek when I'd turn a corner and run into something big and angry. We turned the lights off and sat in front of the PC for hours.

The original, unedited, on Playstation version of Resident Evil. I'd never heard of the game til a friend of mine rented it and told me how awesome it was. I picked it up at his house, played, and still to this day nothing has scared me like the damned dogs leaping through the window in the first narrow hallway.

Ooooooooooohhhh. I will have to say that the cutscene that introduces the hunters _ when it's the first-person perspective of the hunter storming towards the house _ freaked me RIGHT the fuck out. And the licker running across the window of the police station in RE2 did a number on me, too.
