You mean 4 or 5 of their last 8 - since the Indians really need 5 or all 6 of the head to head games before the Chisox need to think wild card. And as you say, if the Yanks need to go 11-4 and the Bosox 9-4 while playing each other 3 games, that seems impossible, unless Ozzie turns into Gene Mauch here.

And I'll second AWA for the Cub fans, October baseball in this town is still enough of an oddity that I'll be happy to see them make it *gives thumbs up to the White Sox fans*

*whispers to other Cub fans around here* But do we really want to take the chance that the Sox win the series before the North-siders pull it off? *looks shifty*

Updated 9/19:

Cleveland: --
New York: 1.5 GB
Oakland: 5 GB

Cleveland and the Yankees have caught fire and Oakland's stumbling towards the finish line. Unfortunately, so are the Angels, which means Oakland may shift it's focus from getting in the back door to busting through the front.

It should be noted:

Los Angeles of Anaheim: --
Oakland: 2 GB

Boston: --
New York: 1.5 GB

Chicago: --
Cleveland: 3.5 GB

Looks like EVERY division is up for grabs right about now.

These are desperate times, and it is time for desperate men to do desperate things. The lead of 4 games dissipated in less than 10 days. Time to:

Bench Renteria. He can't hit, he can't defend. Play Cora or even Hanley Ramirez. They could at least field the ball.
Roll the dice and give Hansen the 8th inning. Dare I even say Timlin in the 8th, Hansen in the 9th.
And, the real desperation move: Wakefield Wednesday again Tampa, Sunday against Baltimore, Wednesday against Toronto and Sunday against the Yankees, should the game mean anything. I'm actually close to calling for Wakefield every other day until his arm falls off should the situation arise. If the Red Sox somehow survive, it will be with Wakefield and Ortiz dragging the carcass across the finish line.

Hot Diggity Dog!

The Sox are stumbling (Take your pick on which Sox). Thanks to the Boston loss, the Tribe now has the second-best record in the AL. If they can take the division, they may just win home field in the playoffs, not to mention that since the AL won the All-Star game - that would also mean home field all the way through!

Heady days here in Cleveland. This race is INTENSE.

Div. Overall
Chicago 90-59 - -
Cleveland 88-62 2.5 2.5

Boston 87-63 - 3.5
New York 86-63 0.5 4

Anaheim 84-65 - 6
Oakland 83-67 1.5 7.5

Yes.

I'd play Hanley over Cora. If we've already blown one of his option years, let's see what he can do right now.

Roll the dice and give Hansen the 8th inning.

Absolutely.

Dare I even say Timlin in the 8th, Hansen in the 9th.

I wouldn't go that far; Timlin's struggles this year have mostly been with runners on base, and having him be a set-up guy rather than the closer would mean more situations in the 7th and 8th with runners on base. Myers and Bradford should be specialty guys, Hansen and Papelbon split set-up duty and Timlin closes.

And where's Manny Delcarmen in all this? The club was so high on him (and, unlike Cla Meredith, he actually repaid that faith most of the time), and now he's nowhere.

Every outing from Foulke is either scary or encouraging. For every time he throws two scoreless innings, he has one game where he can't throw strikes at all, unless of the meatball variety. And his velocity's still hovering around 86; I had thought that the knee surgery would let him get it back up to 88 or 89. If he can get it together, his offspeed stuff combined with the heat from Papelbon, Timlin and Hansen can be great.

And, the real desperation move: Wakefield Wednesday again Tampa, Sunday against Baltimore, Wednesday against Toronto and Sunday against the Yankees, should the game mean anything.

Agreed. Wake's our best pitcher right now and he's got a rubber arm.

If the Red Sox somehow survive, it will be with Wakefield and Ortiz dragging the carcass across the finish line.

And guys who probably shouldn't be there at all. Kapler and Youkilis were both going to be on the postseason roster; what do we do now? Keep Stern, who can't field or hit? Hyzdu, who can't do anything? Or is there a way that these injuries open up playoff spots for Hansen and Ramirez?

Tampa Bay: 7 Boston: 4

New York: 2 Baltimore: 1

New York: --
Boston: .5 GB

Tampa Bay is playing spoiler again. They've knocked the Red Sox out of first and Randy Johnson's propelled the Yankees atop the AL East. The defending champs stand to miss the playoffs completely, especially if Cleveland keeps up its mind-boggling pace.

EDIT: ESPN.com's David Schoenfield has a great piece on Aaron Fuckin' Small, his improbable rise, and why life in baseball just isn't fair if you're a Yankee hater. Amen, brother.

Goodness this weekend took a lot of the weight off of my chest. Basically the White Sox are in a place where if we win 3 games, we're in the playoffs. We can do that before we even have to go to Cleveland for the last weekend of the season. While obviously I would rather have the division and home field (mostly because I have playoff tickets), as long as we're in, I'll take my chances.

Personally, I hope we sweep Detroit the next 4, Cleveland sweeps TB, and we win the first one in Cleveland, and then they win the next two to make sure that the wild card comes from the Central, and we only have to deal with watching one or the other of the Red Sox and Yankees.

And then the White Sox get Anaheim and get to see Vlad impale them. Hope for an Oakland sweep this week and the possibility of them being the team you face in Round 1 in the Quest To Win a Post-Season Series for the First Time Since 1917.
Tampa might take 2 out of 3 from Cleveland though. Kazmir is a tough pitcher, and Pinella has them playing tough. The sun game could come back to haunt the Indians.

If the White Sox see Anaheim again, it's hard to say whether it'll be Angel Domination. The bullpen has been awful. Brendan Donnelly and Scot Shields were once our two best weapons and now they're our two biggest liabilities with both throwing erratically and one week won't be enough to boost their confidences back up. Combine that with Colon's back and Washburn's shoulder and Chicago might actually come into that series a favorite.

That is IF Anaheim makes it. They start four with Oakland tonight.

If the Angels make it, it'll definitely be on the back of Kelvim Escobar. What a godsend he's been.

EDIT 9/26: Wow, the Angels pulled out a close won and the difference maker turned out to be the struggling Steve Finley, of all people!

The Red Sox got rained out, which is the LAST thing the Boston faithful want. In no way does having to play a doubleheader help them at this point.

Due to rain, the Red Sox rotation has now been reconfigured. Pitching match-ups this weekend are now Wang vs. Wells, Johnson vs. Wakefield, and Mussina vs. Schilling. Throwing Wakefield on 3 days rest doesn't concern me, actually, I prefer him going on short rest. The problem is one that only those who pay close attention to the team (thus eliminating the FOX broadcasting crew) would pick up: Varitek is a superior right handed hitter. He will be on the bench Saturday against Johnson, as Mirabelli will be catching Wakefield. Only other option would be to DH Varitek, but that eliminates Ortiz. Conversely, now Varitek will catch Schilling on Sunday. Varitek is a sub .100 career hitter vs. Mussina. Also, Wakefield has matched up very well against Mussina the past few seasons.

A big Thank You to the Motor City Kitties for pounding down the White Sox in the 9th. Kazmir vs. Elarton tonight, and Elarton has been on a pretty good streak lately.

And a farewell to Oakland, as it would seem their postseason just went bye-bye.

This is going to be a great few days of baseball with the White Sox two games up on the Red Sox, Yanks, and Indians. I'm rooting for a four way tie for two spots. I'm not sure if that's actually logisitically possible though. I wonder what the scenerio would be there? I guess BOS/NYY and CWS/CLE for the division titles with the losers facing off for the wild card. In that scenario, I think you'd have to take the Angels to win on of the ALDS since they ought to be able to get their pitching in line (as banged up as it is).

That said, I doubt the ChiSox fail to win the division outright. It just isn't possible for them to collapse that much.

I heard on Mike and Mike this AM that the Chisox can clinch the playoffs this afternoon with a win. I don't see any possible way they haven't already clinched at least the wildcard as NY and Boston play each other the last 3 games, so at least one of those teams will have to lose at least one game.

Congrats to the White Sox for making it to the postseason.

Thus far the W. Sox have clinched a tie for the WC. If we win this afternoon, we clinch the AL Central, as if Cleveland finished tied with us at 96-66, they will win the WC, since the second place team in the AL East can do no better than 95-67. And if two teams from the same division are tied, but both of them are going to the playoffs, the division title is awarded based on head to head record, which the Sox would have won 10-9.

So basically as long as we win another game this year, we're in the playoffs for sure.

So if CWS lose their last 4, NY and Bos both win today, and Bos takes 2/3 from NY at Fenway, all 3 could end up with 67 losses, regardless of what Cleveland does.

If all 4 teams end up with 67 losses, how would the tiebraker playoffs work? That'd be a 4 way tie for 3 spots, I don't see a 4 way tie for two spots being possible.

More likely though is a 3 way tie between NY, Cleveland and Boston, for 2 spots. I think I heard NY won a coin toss to host a playoff game but I'm not sure.

I think that Cle/Chi and NYY/Bos each play for the division, with the loser of each game meeting to decide the wild card spot. That would be excruciating for fans of those teams, but exhilarating for someone with no allegiance to any of the four (like myself).

Interesting scenario here...

If the White Sox and Indians both lose today, and then the Indians sweep the White Sox, both will finish 95-67.

If the Yankees and Boston both win today, and then Boston takes two of three from NY, both will finish 95-67.

Four teams finishing 95-67. With both divisions and the wildcard up for grabs. Chicago would hold the season series edge over Cleveland, 11-8, and NY over Boston 10-9. Would Boston then host Cleveland for the wildcard playoff?

the head to head comes into play only if both teams are guaranteed a playoff spot. In the case of the four way playoff each of the two divisions would play their game to decide the division, then the losers would play the next day for the wildcard.

Not only that, but Cleveland won all the tiebreaker scenario coin flips to host the playoff game, unless they are tied with Boston.

Given their weird home woes though, I don't know that I would consider this good news. Looks like someone accidentally hit the "Off" button for the offense. *sigh*
