(Oh boy... ANOTHER one!)

Well, my answer's Robbie Williams!

"What the hell? Robbie Williams... he SUCKS!" You might say, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that.

What sucked was the way Mtv tried to push him down your throat with the gimmicky MILLENNIUM single, instead of a better song off the same album. They could/should have used KARMA KILLER or LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU which are better songs and give you more of his personality then what they chose as his first single.

Why he hasn't hit it off over here like I think he should have is beyond my scope of comprehension. He's the British 'Justin Timberlake' but with 'talent'! What do you NOT like about the guy?

Hell, he banged Kylie Minogue; that's about the only reason I can see for someone to not like him, but that says nothing about his great music.

(I'm doing THIS question as a way of pimping his newest CD which comes out in a couple weeks featuring cover and inside artwork by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely who are doing the ALL STAR SUPERMAN title for DC. Any chance to pimp is a good chance!)

This isn't much of a surprise considering your favorite movie from your other thread

I'd have to list Toad the Wet Sprocket on this one. I've always liked them, well at least since MTV played them on a "Buzz Clip". Their currently broken up and working with other bands. Perhaps because everybody missed the boat on them...

The Mekons continue to put out interesting, original music some 20-odd years into their career, and are almost entirely ignored by critics and the public alike. (Mostly the public.)

The question only calls for ONE, but have A FEW. The first would be my choice if only ONE could be considered though.

The Waifs.
-Incredible folk-rock band from Australia. I saw them open for Bob Dylan in 2003 and they almost instantly became one of my favorite bands.

Strangefolk.
-Not together anymore, but there is plenty of material to listen to. The BEST jam band I have ever heard. Incredible vocals and lyrics (Reid Genauer, now with Assembly of Dust), and a mightly fine bluegrass/folk-rock band to back him up.

Michael Franti & Spearhead
-Part hip-hop, part reggae, part jam band. Very politically charged music, but still very fun to listen to.

Dishwalla
-Rock band who is best known as a one hit wonder band from the mid 90s with "Counting Blue Cars." However, they are much better than that title. Opaline is by far their best album.

Hair of the Dog
-An Irish folk band. Not everybody's thing, but if you like the genre, these guys are the best in the States.

Manic Street Preachers. Although to be fair, circumstances kind of derailed their American success. They were going to tour here to support The Holy Bible (with Sponge, which probably explains everything) and Richey James disappears. Everything Must Go got great reviews, but they just didn't catch here. Shame, as The Holy Bible could have very easily blown them up HYOOOGE in the US.

Well, I guess they did have a big hit with EPIC but never found the success they deserved after that, that is of course Faith No More. A band that was good enough to have a bunch of platinum records, and the respect of music connoisseurs, but I guess they didn't look good in flannel. Because they got tossed aside quickly.

They rocked. I still pull out my Angel Dust tape every now and then to rock out.

The Tragically Hip (this post is only directed at those of you living outside of Canada and possibly those in Detroit, Buffalo or other close-to-the-border American cities).

On the flip side, congrats to ABC for hiring Tim McGraw to tailor the lyrics to "I like it, I love it" for every halftime highlight show throughout the "Monday Night Football" season. Just last week, my buddy House and I were discussing Cosell's classic highlight narratives in the '70s, and how nobody had approached them since, and I told House, "Only one thing could ever come close, and I know it's a long shot, but what if ABC hired Tim McGraw to tailor the lyrics to 'I Like it, I Love It' for each week of NFL highlights throughout the season?" And wouldn't you know, it happened! See, dreams can come true. --- Bill Simmons, www.sportsguy.net

Interesting. Here in Europe, Robbie Williams was bigger than Jesus for a while. So on this side of the ocean nobody missed the boat.
Manic Street Preachers were also huge for a while, but this was in their post-Richie era when imo their music sucked.

I hope nobody will miss the boat on The Magic Numbers.
A british band, making light folkrock with hippie tendencies.
The triple vocals by the (male) singer and (Female) bassplayer/recorderplayinggirl are awesome.
And how can one not love a band with a girl that plays the recorder.

Long dead but Nick Drake who was like Donovan but with talent. Killed himself almost 30 years ago after only a couple of albums.

Richard Thompson who was a founding member of the British folk rock movement of the 1960's and still going strong today. An incredible guitarist and composer.

And John Cale of VU fame. Any one who writes a song named "Fear is a Mans Best Friend" can't be all bad.

I'd say Alice in Chains. They had success, but never what I would call "break out" success - IMO they always dwelled in the shadows of Nirvana and Soundgarden.

RIP Layne.

Two come to mind:

SIXWIRE - THey had a great style similar to Sawyer Brown

Jenny Simpson - a country songstress that was just overlooked because Shaniamania was running wild and outta control.

Other mentions go to Stephanie Beaumont and Monia here in Canada.

Funny, I was going to mention the Hip for all those outside of Canada, but Big Bad beat me to it...

One band that did not last long was The Arc Angels... I just love their one album...

Tsar

But I blame Hollywood Records for having them and doing NOTHING to promote them.

Now they've jumped to TVT, swapped out some members and changed their sound up a bit. They shouldn't have though, because their self-titled debut is pretty damn awesome.

A whole bunch come to mind, but I'll try and limit it.

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy: Michael Franti's band before Spearhead is criminally overlooked. I like his work with Spearhead, but I absolutely love the stuff he and Ron Tse did together.

The Waterboys (especially Room to Roam): an Irish band that was a staple on our college radio station when I was an undergrad that seemingly no one else has ever heard.

The Housemartins and their descendants Beats International and The Beautiful South: Somewhere down in the basement, I still have the single version of Caravan of Love / When I First Met Jesus which remains the best acappella pop I've ever heard.

Prefab Sprout: Jordan: The Comeback is one of the best albums of all time and nobody's ever heard it.

And easily puts on one of the best live shows. I've seen him twice, and I've yet attend a concert with better energy. Even the folks who didn't know his music had a good time.

Soul Coughing was my favorite band of the 90's - especially their 1st (Ruby Vroom!) and 2nd album (Irresistible Bliss). Even 10 years later, I still enjoy those albums.

Wendy Waldman

Seventies pop/bluegrass singer/songwriter on Warner Bros with a couple of eighties rock albums for good measure. Brilliant. Completely overlooked. Wrote lots of songs for others. Probably best known for co-writing Denise Williams' hit "Save the Best for Last". She's also produced several artists. Frankly, her resume is far too long to summarize briefly. Working on a new solo album for independent release.

Her 70's albums just came out on CD for the first time ever thanks to Collector's Choice Music.

BTW - Collector's Choice Music is worth browsing for hard to find stuff all on its own.

Oh yes...And I also absolutely agree on the Tragically Hip.

Five Iron Frenzy.

Though most of their songs had a Christian theme, they were just fun and funny and a good punk/Ska sound and I just had a ball at all their shows. Broke up now, so they'll never come back. But I thought they were better than Switchfoot, who has broken out of the "Christian Genre" world.

Yeah, the problem with holding on to the puck for two long is that there comes a point where the defenseman will stop skating backwards as much and end up rubbing you out along the boards and just take the puck.
