Wow. Manning got picked OFF by Jacksonville, this is shaping up well.

I just witnessed *the* worst homer ref call in my entire life. Mike Williams makes a fantastic catch, almost one-handed, to get the Lions out of a 3rd and 10 but is called for pass interference. Multiple replays show NOTHING AT ALL happening. Williams caught the ball. That was it. What a horrible, horrible call and even Joe Buck was commenting on it being terrible. Nice to see Chicago can only play when the refs are fixing their games.

That was a terrific catch, and I want to pull my hair out when I see Kevin freaking Johnson in the slot when Detroit goes 3-wide. And did anyone let Charles Rogers know that there is a game today?

Detroit just gave up 31 points. In the first half. To the Bears! I am beginning to get the feeling the Lions' season was lost in the last preseason game, when Garcia snapped his stick, as Garcia gives Mooch the confidence to yank Harrington in games he has like this, where he is in total quicksand.

Lets not forget that Mike Brown is a sorry excuse for a human being, just like the Bears fans in Soldier Field that boo'd the flag on that sickening display.

If you want to talk about a homer call, talk to Jimmy Smith and Jack Del Rio. Brent Jones tried to make it sound like the contact on the final play might have been incidental, but it certainly looked like pass interference to me. Furthermore, it looked like the Colts jumped early on the last play.

And quietly, in Houston, the Steelers dominated. Again.

Pardon me, but Jimmy Smith tripping over his own feet is pass interference? You're probably right on the offsides, but that was the makeup call for the missed J-ville offsides on the 3rd down right before the 2 minute warning.

Overall, jumping around on the Sunday ticket, I'm pretty comfortable in saying that the officiating was bad league wide today.

It's Houston That's kind of like the Michigan fans at church this morning telling me how good Michigan is because they beat up on Eastern Michigan.

Can I get a mulligan on my Vikings winning the NFC pick?
Bears scored 31 in the first half? I didn't think they would score 31 in the first half of the season.
The QB might change, but the Ravens offense still suck. At what point does the head coach, the offensive wizard, get the blame?

While I didn't pick the Vikings to win the NFC, I did pick them to win their division, and I would like said mulligan on that too. However, with them being in the same division as Chicago, Detroit, and Gren Bay I wouldn't be surprised if Minny still takes that division with a 7-9 record.

Congrats to Carolina for a great game vs. my Pats. I picked the Pats to go 12-4 with this game being one of the losses for them. For all the Panther fans on the wiener board, see you guys in Detroit for Super Bowl XL.

Can I get another mulligan for my pick of the Ravens winning the AFC North?

Awful, awful, awful day for New England sports. At least the Yankees lost...

"He is the most overrated piece of crap in the league. He bitched and whined after he got his ass beaten in New England last year, so the NFL changed the rules. Then he got his ass beaten in New England again. Every year he's the top MVP candidate. Every year he's supposed to be the best. Every year he's going to carry the Colts to the Super Bowl. And every single year he goes to New England and gets his ass beaten. And his brother's a whiny little bitch." -A friend of mine, on Peyton Manning

Wasn't that a good trick by Ben in the preseason? To act like he had forgotten how to play football the game, only to reveal that he is, in reality, wonderful?

But let's talk about William Parker. In a word, OMG. Though I'm looking forward to having Staley and Bettis take the clock-killing role when they come back, 'cause Willie, he's not a large man. I don't know how they're going to allot the carries, other than I think it goes without saying that Parker ought to get the majority of them. Sorry dudes. Staley as third down back and Bettis as goal line specialist is not bad in terms of depth, I must say.

2-0 in my money league, with a chance to take high scorer for the week (and the $10 that goes with it). Presumably 2-0 in The W league 2, which should put me at #1 overall. The Packers lose to fall to 0-2.

I was at the Titans/Ravens game today ... what a difference a week makes ... granted, we were playing a pretty inept offense, but holding the Ravens to only 14 yards rushing?!?!? ... fuckin' A ...

Kyle Vanden Bosch has to be the AFC Defensive Player of the Week ... 3 sacks ... the guy is a machine ...

I was toggling Pats/Panthers and Lions/Bears and kept seeing that Jags/Colts non-score and feeling somewhat better that my beloved 'Hawks scored 14 on them last week. Then I felt great as they hung 21 on the Falcons in the first half. Then I felt that usual pit of dread well up in my stomach as the offense went scoreless in the 2nd half for the 2nd week and the defense had to save the day (a hobbled Ron Mexico didn't hurt either). Gonna be a long weird season.

I thought the Vikes would be awesome this year. Wow. Tice might be fired as I type this.

Green Bay is going to win, at most, 4 games this year. On the bright side, this will get Mike Sherman fired (a year too late) but this is going to be a rough season for Packer Backers.

NFC Championship game....Philly vs. Tampa Bay?

On the flip side, congrats to ABC for hiring Tim McGraw to tailor the lyrics to "I like it, I love it" for every halftime highlight show throughout the "Monday Night Football" season. Just last week, my buddy House and I were discussing Cosell's classic highlight narratives in the '70s, and how nobody had approached them since, and I told House, "Only one thing could ever come close, and I know it's a long shot, but what if ABC hired Tim McGraw to tailor the lyrics to 'I Like it, I Love It' for each week of NFL highlights throughout the season?" And wouldn't you know, it happened! See, dreams can come true. --- Bill Simmons, www.sportsguy.net

If New Orleans can continue to keep Aaron Brooks from playing like Aaron Brooks like they did in Week 1, I'd say the Bucs are the weakest team in the NFC South.

Of course, the young guys in their offense might just be warming up and will blow everyone away when they hit their stride. But as it stands now, the Saints, Panthers, and Falcons all have more proven weapons than the Bucs.

Perhaps I underestimated the Bungles. Perhaps I also overestimated the Ravens. I think Pittsburgh looks a lot better than I had hoped, and Green Bay looks terrible. Indy appears pretty badass on defense now, so initially it looks like this could be a very special year for them.

How 'bout that non-touchdown by Stephen Davis for Carolina.
The replays showed the ball clearly never crossed the goal line. I wish they would have reviewed that play.
That doesn't excuse the Pats poor offensive showing, but could have been a difference maker.

Looking over the play-by-play, that touchdown was on 1st and goal at the one yard line. While I agree that Davis was about half an inch short of crossing the goal line, I was never worried about the Panthers being able to score on 2nd and an inch.

I thought the offense was quite good and the first half. In the second half they just tried not to lose it so they went conservative plus I think the Ravens D made adjustments. And Jamal Lewis got shut down and the defense was just awesome yesterday, of course it was the Ravens O they where going up against.

And Vanden Bosch may end up being a good signing.

And Jimmy Smith was interfered with and the Colts got a homer call. He was pushed down.

And the Bengals may have something this year. That offense is good.

And what happened to Daunte Culpepper? Not having Moss made him forget how to play QB?

That was actually the one thing that Steelers couldn't do on offense yesterday was kill the clock completely- and against a 7/8 dead Texans defense. Other than that, Houston was dominated physically and out-planned. A 3-headed monster of Parker as the feature-back, Staley on 3rd and long and Bettis on 3rd and short with all of them not tiring out during games along with the Steelers' line and Ben not just caretaking games this year but actually winning them (which he has absolutely done so far) would make them even more dangerous, although the big test comes next week.

Also, Troy Polamalu is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help David Carr.

EDIT: I also just realized that I wrote that much about the Steelers and don't have that much to say about my own Dolphins except that they got outblocked when it counted and made way too many mistakes to think about winning the game. Carolina's next, and I think reality for Miami may soon follow.
