Not Game system..

I was inspired by the old computer thread, because I was (and still am) in love with a WWII Submarine game called Harpoon. I love to go out and take down the whole Japanese fleet. But once in awhile those guys sink me.

I guess I like it cause it's slow-paced, and I need that.

I used to have a game on my old Commodore 64 -- I think it was called "Wizard." It was a basic sort of platformy game, but you could create and save your own levels -- that was awesome. I miss it.

I'm also fond of Lode Runner.

Was Wizard the game where you stood in a maze and basically had to blast everything that came into sight (incl the other player if you played with two)
My dad and I played that a lot.

I think my favorite computer game has to be Knights of the Old Republic II.
Despite all the cuts they had to make to release the game I just love the way it plays, and how you can truely turn evil and influence your companions as well.

Picking just one game is, at least for me, impossible, so I'll give you a really short list that's in no particular order. I was addicted to, and still would be if I could find a way to slow it down enough to play it on my laptop, the original X-Com. Shooting aliens, base building, politics, strategy and tactics; what's not to love?

The Civilization games, and I like each of the first 3, have always been among my favorites and the knowledge that the 4th one is coming out around my birthday has me shuddering as I think what that's going to do to my prep time for classes. I mean, it's Civ, what more needs to be said?

I've always, since I was about 7, been a D&D guy and so any list also has to include 3 of my favorites from that genre. The entire Baldur's Gate series was arguably the best and deepest RPG I've ever played. For me, the only real competition was it's sort of predecessor Planescape: Torment. I've replayed both in the past year and they're still great games. Finally, I've also got to throw a bone to Neverwinter Nights. Not so much because of the story line of the original and the expansions, which stunk, but because of the massive and massively good fan creations and modules. Penultima and Penultima Rerolled are personal favorites and are among some of the funniest things I've ever RPG'ed.

I should probably also mention the old Sierra "Quest" games because I spent a whole lot of time with Roger and all those silly royalty when I was younger and had much more free time. I could go on and on, but that's probably enough (unless I remember more later.)

Tim

Ummmm...that's a really difficult question. I'd have to give two responses to that:

Favorite of all time: Doom 2

Current favorite: Enter The Matrix

Um...Text Twist?

I haven't played a traditional computer game in years. I was hooked on the original Myst for quite some time, so I'll go with that.

I also remember playing a hell of a lot of Karateka (sp?) back when I was a kid.

I was thinking, reading your responses and I remember, back on the C-64, discovering Zork. Man I was carzy about that at the time. One of the BBses in chicago had that online as a door and I was crazy about it for 6 months or a year.

Diablo 2. It's pretty hard for one game to keep your interest for five years, but Diablo 2 pulls it off nicely.

Hell, I can still play the first Diablo, and that came out in '96.

Game I have sadly spent the most time playing: Everquest

Favorite game...now that's a tricky one. There are so many, and the genres of computer games are so diverse.

But I'll have to give the nod to The Secret of Monkey Island. Any game that I still played after I had it completely memorized just for fun must be great.

BTW, has anybody else played any games from www.spiderwebsoftware.com ?

If not and you enjoy old style computer games(which it seems like most of you do) give them a try. I'd recommend Exile 3 first(or whatever the new remake is called). They make incredibly deep, huge and open ended rpgs.

Being a consoles freak myself, there haven't been many computer games I loved. One that made me addicted to play was NHL 2000. I am always a sucker for EA's hockey games, and this one was excellent.

The old Wolfenstein games. I also liked the old Doom games. There were a few others that I mentioned in the first computer thread (duke nukem, commander keen, oregon trail), but I haven't really played computer games in a while since I mainly play consoles.

Wow-I can't believe someone mentioned Wizard, the old C64 game. I used to love making levels on that.

I have a very short attention span, so video games are tough for me, but I have enjoyed every chapter of the Leisure Suit Larry series.

Call me crazy, but there's something about REDNECK RAMPAGE that keeps making me play it whenever I get the chance.

Other then that, Solitaire is the computer game of choice for me whenever I'm on a computer.

I love the Thief games. The gameplay is incredibly fun and stressful at the same time, and the setting is incredibly unique for a computer game. Steampunk!!
System Shock 2 is great because it might even be more heart attack-inducing than Thief.

As an aside, I once spilled wine on Buzz Aldrin right before he was to give a speech dedicating a moon rock or something. That was my last day as a cater-waiter.
