Scaia's (onlineonslaught.com) still doing a fine recap every Tuesday (and occasionally on Fridays). You could also check out Heart Punch (heartpunch.blogspot.com) for a little more humor with your wrestling.

"He is the most overrated piece of crap in the league. He bitched and whined after he got his ass beaten in New England last year, so the NFL changed the rules. Then he got his ass beaten in New England again. Every year he's the top MVP candidate. Every year he's supposed to be the best. Every year he's going to carry the Colts to the Super Bowl. And every single year he goes to New England and gets his ass beaten. And his brother's a whiny little bitch." -A friend of mine, on Peyton Manning

Not to (yes to) derail this to talk about the state of the all-important Heat recap, but these are indeed sad times for the Heat community. Me having no more Heat reports to write after nearly two and a half years is one thing, but with the end of both Heat and Velocity, I think this could be the first time in like 7 years that our good friend The Cubs Fan won't be recapping a WWF b-show. To say nothing of the wonderful Next Mideon at Weekly Visitor.

What will become of us? What is the Saturday morning show on USA going to be like? How different is it going to be with no 7 p.m. last minute selljob for each month's PPV? And how many more roster spots are going to be expendable with only 4 hours of wrestling per week?

Yeah, I miss reading recaps, sometimes they were better than the shows.

One of the first CRZ recaps I remember reading was when the Undertaker was doing the American Bad Ass gimmick and CRZ recapped the pin with something like, "1, 2, 3. I call him cowboy!" Made me laugh and that's when I became a fan.

Found it!

Slightly off topic, but I just wanted to point out that I have been meaning to ask Justin about "Shades of Maven" ever since Maven was fired and I always tend to forget. Thanks for the explanation.

As far as the "B" shows going away, it's going to suck not being able to read Justin and Cubs doing the Heat and Velocity reports every week.

Oh man. I wish every report I did was still on the site, because then this would have a much larger list. Also, this. And best of all, this.

To answer the titular question, I think it's as simple as there was a big wrestling boom from 1996-2001 and lots of people were like ooh, I gotsta gotsta get on the old internet and write about it because it rules so much. In 2005, wrestling is significantly colder so there's fewer people who get interested enough to feel the impetus to bring their interest to the world's wide web. So fewer sites and fewer people writing and fewer people writing well enough to catch on with whomever for whatever reason. (Oddly, a goofy self-aggrandizing term like "the IWC" was never thrown around like it meant something until after the boom and the heavy interest, both overall and on the internet, had died out.)

I'd like to send a nostalgic shout-out to Chan, Charlie and Bill from DDT Digest, one of the most underrated wrestling sites from back in the golden days of the IWC and easily the best WCW site of all time. Chan & Charlie's Nitro and Thunder recaps pwned.

I think that a parallel phenomenon is a lack of writing boom. Since wrestling is not on the rise, writing about it isn't either. If you decide to become a recapper for a site now, chances are you're going to be the recapper for that site until you quit or are asked to stop. If you get 5,000 readers tomorrow, you'll probably have 5,000 readers a year from now. Along with the boom in wrestling, people got to see writers split from old sites, form their own, and go on to "glory." Or sites exploded with readers and made money, and someone who was recapping for a small audience one month was recapping for a far larger one the next.

So while wrestling isn't attracting writers on its own -- because of staleness or whatever you want to blame -- writers also lack the attraction of seeing great work payoff as demonstrably (and sometimes financially) as it did five years ago. I think you implied this in your post, Justin, but I think it is a concrete thing for some people. Doing well for the sake of doing well and a few scattered complimentary emails is enough for some; for others, the return doesn't cover the hours of dedication to what's essentially a hobby. It's cynical, but I think it's a factor for a lot of people.

Anyway, while we're on the subject, what will you do now? Any plans?

I don't see how he has any choice other than to become a boxcar hobo, riding the rails in pursuit of adventure and running away from a world that has left him behind.

Or, Justin and Todd Martin could alternate on RAW reviews. Personally I like both of their recaps quite a bit, and think a change of pace every other week would make for an interesting read.

Totally agreed, but I think there's also something to be said for the changing style of the internet being a contribution. Being a recapper on a wrestling site back then was big, as the only alternative really was to do stuff on a Geocities or Angelfire site (which nobody would take seriously anyway). In this day and age, anyone and everyone can have a blog, and having "blogspot.com" in the domain doesn't really turn people off. Having said that, political blogs seem to dominate people's attention in this day and age, and there's a lot more attention being put in that direction. So yes, the boom ending was the primary factor, but there's also other issues taking people's attention that have contributed.

Agreed (again). I certainly can't speak for the majority of readers, but that's what turned me off to a lot of recappers (and recaps in general). It became more about who was recapping rather than what they were recapping or how they went about it. A lot of them (none of the really good ones of course) started getting big egos, it showed in their writing, and it just annoyed me to no end. I was always appreciative of the time and effort put in, and while I certainly wouldn't say that absolutely anybody can do it as well as some of the recappers who got more attention in the past, in the end they're just recapping a wrestling show.

I wish Cubs would at least post in this thread so I don't feel so solipsistic.

Pretty much, pretty much. It sort of depends on what the USA show is like. Otherwise I'd just like to continue as Todd Martin's understudy and fill in for him when he's busy. It's a solid deal since on occassion I get to experience the glitz and glamour of Monday Night Raw without having to write it every single week. I'm not sure if I have the wrestling joke-making cardio to do a 2 hour show each week where something happens every segment, as opposed to a largely meaningless 1 hour show where nothing happens in any segment.

If anything changes I'll certainly let you know. I appreciate the smidge of interest. Also BigSteve, who said something nice one time.

How about you, The Cubs Fan? You'll always have the lucha sure, but everyone knows New York is the show. The b-show.

I'm not replying because I'm ducking the question, Mr. Word A Day. But I guess I can't do that anymore if you keeping calling me out and/or dropping the punk card. Last time I fill in for you on WO...oh right

MEXICO CITY > NEW YORK!!!

There's a long hideously boring back story I should write someplace no one reads, but I can save the trouble by getting to the future

- there won't be a teary farewell message to end the last Velocity/Heat because I'll be spending most of that weekend at the first/last/only thecubsfan.com meetup (better known as IWA-MS's TPI shows) and watching a team of which I am a fan in their home park. I'll just be happy to get things done and go to sleep at that point.

- I'll probably recap the 10/01 WWE Saturday morning show because, eh, why not. I did it for all the exterior shows the week of the TNN move, and while my interest has fallen, so has the number of hours. And if it's just a highlight reel, I can be done with it in 20 minutes.

I won't really know enough until after that show airs, so I'm not really thinking about decision until then. Who knows what could happen between now and then? Maybe the shows will rule enough that it's worth writing 4000 words (and one funny joke). Maybe the WWE.com exclusive matches will prove profitable and they'll do B-Shows there? (are these matches in continuity, or at least as much as Velocity and Heat are in continuity? should I be recapping them already? oh no) Maybe I'll find the capacity to write WWE columns (and long posts) I don't instantly want to delete, erase, and firebomb the moment I start typing? (haha no)

Don't have to decide for a month, so ain't gonna decide for a month. Probably could've saved myself some typing by just writing that.

1) Sorry. The initial version of my post actually did come out and say "Maybe I can troll Cubs into responding." But it was only because I didn't want to talk about me, not because I was interested in you. If that helps.

2) Was my 7 years of WWF b-shows & Cubs guess accurate? Did it begin with Jakked in like 1999? (Worldwide doesn't count.) There's probably an index on your site I could check but then this wouldn't be Cubs Fan: the exclusive personal interview.

3) What kind of influence did your parents have on your recapping style?

4) Steve Romero or Ernest Miller? Alternately, Steve Romero and Ernest Miller together?

Oh, it sure does.

2) I did a couple on RSPW in '99, but it's close to 5 years regularlly, which is a good for something that started in complete spite

3) As a automaton, I don't have parents in the traditional sense.

4) Ernest Miller easily! To continue take this widly off subject, Velocity Announcer crews, in order of awesome

You can stop right there, there's no need to rank the rest. Tazz and Josh ruled the Earth when they were together on Velocity. Remember the greatness that was the calling of the hot tag to Poker Face.

Today's shows are so horrible it is almost punishment to have to recap them. I would stop recapping to if I had been covering something really good and then had to chronicle its downward spiral into the toilet. Something is no longer a hobby if it feels like a job, my personal rating system for Raw is that it either puts me to sleep (literally), or I find it mildly interesting. Last year was better because of Eddie/Benoit, but this year sucks like 2003, which was worse than 2002, which was worse than 2001 and so on. Things will not get better until there is competition to spur creatvity.
