It didn't even occur to me that nobody'd started a TUF2 thread until I remembered just now that I'd sat through the whole thing and DIDN'T EVEN GET TO SEE A FIGHT. WHAT THE FUCK.
I keep expecting to see "Starring DANA WHITE As Dana White" in the credits
That Luke sure is weird. He sure is. He sleeps on the floor facing north! His COMPASS! He...can squat against the wall for five minutes! (What?)
"Ain't nobody better piss on my bed!" YEAH
Nobody drinks - I guess they only brought in people who watched the first show? What stupid mistakes will THEY make THIS time?
Since when do they pick a 190 pound guy to compete at 170? Is this the same deal as TUF1 where they really had to scrape for dudes to fill out a roster? Are they not taking "criminal records" dudes again? Where's Frank when I need him?
Dana White: shut the (beep) up you (beep) because you're no bad (beep) (beep) (beeeeeep) just because you say a lot of (beep).
(Beep)!
I like how they promised someone would be BLOODIED next week, as if that will bring me back. Well....I WILL, but not because of THAT.
Dana White was definitely being much more of a "character." Although his toughness was tempered a bit when the departing fighters left the room after a handshake from Dana and he turned to the other guys and said, "Okay, I didn't say this before, but those guys are pussies."
Now that's in-your-face action!
It seems like some of those guys are pretty old. There was one dark-haired guy who didn't speak a lot, but looked like he had a face lift.
No fight was disappointing, that was such a great payoff to every show last season. Just because the hillbilly kid didn't want to drop five more pounds? Hell, throw him in the octagon anyway.
* When you hear the boss comparing the entire group to Strange Brew, you know something wrong.
* Multiple injuries and 2 drop out before the first fight isn't a good sign either.
* I was impressed with Rich Franklin's words trying to push the kid for the last 5 pounds. That didn't sound like a guy trying to keep one more guy around for the show to me, it really seemed like he wanted the guy not to short-change his dream. I'm liking him as a coach already.
* I do like that we're going to get a fight in the 2nd show. If that last 5 pounds had come off, we'd have had a match in the first week, which is an improvement from the past season. If you leave the show, it should be in the octagon.
* Big props to Forrest getting an endorsement deal and seeing both he and Stephan in another spot. I think it was for an online column, so I'll have to go there when I rewatch tonight, trying to start remembering guys names.
Were they all wearing WASHERS around their necks, or what? Did I miss some symbolism somewhere or was that explained to me if only I'd been properly paying attention to the show?
I may have zoned out, but I couldn't stop staring at those necklaces after a while.

Possibly, but as the Jerry Springer Precedent has taught me, when they use something for that, it's usually just a string or something. Maybe they go with something better.
You wanted the best, you got... Out of Context Quote of the Week.

about the 190 and 170 pounders. If you can get on the scale and weigh 170, it doesn't matter what you weighed 5 minutes before or 5 minutes after. Cuttin weight is very common for wrestlers and mma athletes.
The extra strength is a huge bonus. MAtt Hughes cuts around 20 pounds, as do Frank Trigg and GSP.
The guy who quit mentioned that he had never fought at 170 before which means he probably had fought at 185. It's easy to cut weight when you know about your fights way ahead of time, but on this show you 2 days notice(i think), which makes cutting weight a lot harder.
Is cutting that much weight in such a short amount of time safe? That's what I kept wondering, but I certainly have no experience in that area. I'd do much better gaining an extra 20 lbs in short order.

Yeah, but at some point before the two days notice, they all had to be aware they were going to be fighting at 170 lbs. Why didn't they at least start lightly cutting weight then?
I felt like I was watching that Bobby Southworth episode all over again. As much as it sucked to not see a fight, at least it didn't have the same ending.

It's definitely microphone technology. They used the same thing on "Strip Search" -- the one where they were selecting dancers for a male revue show in Vegas. Similar problem with lack of clothing.
Maybe I wasn't in the mood when I watched it, but it seemed less interesting than last season. Maybe I just need to warm up to some of the guys. Maybe there was so much Dana & rush to meet the guys that were leaving that we didn't get to meet the guys adequately. I'll give it another episode or 2 & see if it engages me any better.
First - the prize. A 6-figure, 3-year UFC deal? This is a prize? That means you win a $33,333/year job. Why not have a reality show called "the Ultimate Sales Representative" where the prize is a 6-figure, 3-year contract hawking pharmaceuticals. Come on, it's a prize. Make it something your average guy in Boise doesn't have.
Second - the first episode. Dude, if you want to get people hooked on the show, don't have it end with a guy not being able to make weight. That's pretty damn anti-climactic. Do SOMETHING. Get another contestant and start the episode over. Make the fight at 175. Give the guy a beatdown from the coach for not being able to make weight. Something. Don't have your first episode of a reality show based on FIGHTING not have a FIGHT. You don't see Survivor have the first episode being the contestants lounging around in their backyards.

I believe the prize is actually $100,000 per year, but Dana White is such a weasel that it looks like he's trying to pull a fast one.
It's stunning that the people who own UFC haven't figured out that Dana makes their company look like a carny operation.
Tonight we saw "a great fight" according to Dana. What I saw was a strategy that was akin to a basketball team going to the four corners offense while trailing by 6 points.
At least Rich Franklin made it clear that his fighter was trailing 2-0 on the scorecards. Did whatshisname think he could win without landing more punches? Did he think he was getting a Sugar Ray Leonard push?
The other fighter did a lot of laying around. He tried to "stay busy" with two inch strikes, but he was basically running his own four corners offense at that point.
What is the point of having two teams? Are they going to even them up after Franklin loses too many of his projects?
I get the feeling UFC decided the first season was perfect, at least after they eliminated the booze. I don't see any other improvements in this season's offering. More of the same, at least so far, with PRODUCT PLACEMENT being the biggest change.

Uh, I could've swore that right after the fight they talked about "whatshisname" breaking his right hand before the third round. Rich Franklin even mentioned that if he had known that he would've suggested a different third round strategy for "whatshisname"!

Don't forget Willa Ford is no longer around to provide roughly 60 seconds of eye candy every week! And third rounds for the fights! And more alternates than ever before!

Yes, Melvin redeemed himself a bit by admitting he choked rather than making excuses because of his broken hand. Seemed like he threw more punches after the hand was broken, so that wouldn't have accounted for his tentative approach anyway.
Maybe they should have an elimination round prior to starting the series so that the fighters who make it to the show have already worked through their butterflies. It seems like the fighters get more agressive after they've been through a fight or two.
Also I'm not sure how effective it is from a presentation standpoint to have ten guys yelling for more action when there isn't much happening in the octagon. It's almost like having their own hostile crowd turning on the match. Maybe they could limit it to coaches?

The last thing they want is silence. Last year there was a lot of talk here about how it would have been a good idea to bring in ANYBODY to do some commentary for these fights, but that suggestion may have stayed here and not have gotten out far enough for anybody to take it.
As for the "four corners offense" analogy, I agree - but after Josh won the first two rounds by my incredibly unofficial scorecard, it just seemed smart - if not terribly exciting television - to tank the third round and coast to the victory.
Escaping the first choke seemed pretty impressive to me - I don't know if he could have got out of that second one had he not been saved by the air horn in the first round.
Nonfight stuff: Melvin going into Dana's office to make the "I just don't think this is for me" swerve was so great, I ALMOST wished I didn't hate him so much after he did it. But I was still happy he lost.
I have to wonder if they agreed ahead of time on the teams and then (for lack of a better word) booked the order in which people were picked to ensure that Luke and (last heavyweight) were picked last.
For all the "will the next fight be in the HOUSE instead of the OCTAGON?" ad hype, I sure never felt like that was going to happen.
Also, where was the BLOODIED? I was promised some BLOODIED in the promo last week!
Next week, I'm promised PEEYOOOOOKE! I hope they don't renege on THAT one!
I'm with CRZ on Josh playing it smart in the 3rd round, but looking at his face and body posture most of the fight, he looked dazed at a minimum and possibly hurt early. The preview for next week makes me think he was just trying to run it out from midway in the 2nd round. John did get some really nice looking takedowns, including that one almost scoop slam that I popped for.
I'm kind of torn on Melvin. While I don't generally like the big talkers like he and Leben, they certainly add alot to the entertainment value of the house segments. While he looked a little too respectful of Josh in the first 2 rounds, when Franklin told him to turn it up, he certainly did and had Josh on the run. He even sat out of one or two takedown attempts that had he managed earlier in the fight, he probably could have walked out winning. He seemed to be a decent striker, if a little too reserved, but he showed next to zero ground game. Not only did he give Josh his back 3 or 4 times, but when he would finally escape, he'd go right back to the middle of the octagon and wait for Josh. He certainly didn't make any excuses and went more than a round throwing punches with a broken hand. The kid's got stones.
I'm looking forward to Luke. He's a quirky personality, but I think that wall sit made the group take notice. I'm also hoping Jorge sticks around for a while. He's the no-nonsense kind of guy that I think Dana would like to have more of.
Saw it last night, and color me impressed. Great acting + great script + killer action sequences + J. J. Abrams = Awesomeness. I cannot recommend this movie enough.
