I HATE the devils - always have - so it was good to see them lose game 1 - I know they were missing some players but Carolina barely even belongs in the playoffs - i hopw to see the devils come home to the swamp with their pitchforks and pointy tales dragging behind them.

Whoa whoa whoa... Hey, they would have finished 7th if they didn't have the division to lean on.
I was discussing the ramifications of a Canes win tonight with a friend of mine earlier (a big Leafs fan) and his response was that if Carolina wins tonight, the league had better watch out. He referred to them as the team that you NEVER know you've beaten until it's over. You can squash 'em 10-0 one night and have them do the same to you the following...
Now that being said, I hope to god that squash never happens. I just want to see them chip away, and chip away, and chip away to the second round. An upset of the Jersey Devils would be AMAZING for this fan who has never seen his club in the second round.
Seeing Carolina win is not that surprising. They have good veteran leadership in Francis and Brind'Amour combined with some good young players like O'Neill, Kapanan, and Battaglia. Irbe is a veteran goalie. The defense is solid and scrappy.
Carolina as a team has improved a little bit every year through chemistry and maturity. It would not be surprising to see them turn into Cup contenders in a few years.
You're in a desert, walking along in the sand when all of a sudden you look down and see a tortoise. It's crawling towards you. You reach down and flip the tortoise over on its back. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over. But it can't. Not without your help. But you're not helping.
I've been wearing my old Ron Francis Whalers jersey all week...
Q: If you could have interviewed Marvin Gaye, where would you have proposed to meet and what would you have asked him?
A: I would have met anywhere as long as it was before his father shot him. I would have asked him, "Hey, don't you think there's some chance that your father might shoot you? To death, I mean?"
The problem with the Whalers WAS the logo... as soon as they got rid of the harpoon and went politically correct with the tailfin logo (which was a cool logo by itself), they ceased to be the Whalers and became the Whale. Whalers are tough guys from New England who risk their lives on the open sea hunting a formidable prey... the Whale is a big, blubbery beast that does nothing but eat plankton (orcas excluded- which is why the Canucks are safe with their current logo)
We fans in Connecticut didn't want to stand behind this wimpy team (As we felt it reflected our service to this great union a little too closely). I grew up here and I'm a Buffalo fan... I wish the 'Canes luck in the playoffs... hell, with Buffalo out (okay, not even close to ever getting in this year), I'm actually ROOTING for them. GO WHALE- I mean... 'CANES!
Well, it looks like they got caned tonight though. Hahahah..what a great joke! No? Oh..sorry
Jersey strikes back..hard. With the set of players the Debbies have they should be able to overcome the hurricanes, yet i wouldn't be surprised if they do pull it off (the canes that is).

cfgb - no disrespect intended towards the Canes - I'm just a bitter NYR fan who will be playing some more golf this week - I am anxiously awaiting the battle with devils fans over tee times after this series
so this is how I see it playing out - WhalerCanes win Game 4 - too much excitement in NC and they fall flat in Game 5 - devils won't lose series at home so it is back to NC for Game 7 - devils have momentum but Irbe stands on his head and Francis scores the series ender - hopefully in double or triple OT just to really drive the pitchfork into the hearts of all the devils fans out there
and how about that Hartford Wolfpack !!!!

Doesn't it suck to visit the NYR.com and all the stuff you read now is how the pack advanced?
WTG by Hartford though. They always perform well in the playoffs I believe?

what is even worse about watching Wolfpack games as an NYR fan is seeing some good young players that will never get a chance to come up to the big club to perform because every GM the NYR have had since Emile "The Cat" Francis has practiced a checkbook philosophy that brings in old, overpriced, underachieving, former all-stars. It's almost like MSG is the "Elepahnt's Graveyard" of 50 goal scorers.

Seeing my team do WELL in the playoffs is making me giddy. I've haven't seen this since 1991 when the Whalers took the Habs to 7 games - and I can't say I really understood it being 9 years old at the time.
How odd is it going to be if Carolina is the highest seed in the East after the first round.
This entire thing we're involved with called the world is an opportunity to exhibit how exciting alienation can be. Life is a matter of a miracle that is collected over time by moments flabbergasted to be in each others' presence. The world is an exam, to see if we can rise into the direct experiences. Our eyesight is here as a test, to see if we can see beyond it. Matter is here as a test for our curiosity. Doubt is here as an exam for our vitality.
I hope you're all happy now, Carolina won the series. I will now lament until next season and call for the Team Formerly Known as the Whalers to lose miserably in the second round.

But, on the plus side, the Flyer are out again in the first round. ha ha ha
Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform, And tell you every detail of Caractacus's uniform; In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
Now that that's behind me - the Canes can look ahead to round two. They'll either wind up with Montreal, Toronto, or the Isles since mathematically it's not possible for them to face Boston or Ottawa. Frankly, I'd rather not see them face any of them and just take byes - but what can they do.
I did say Carolina in 6, though I've been saying that for years. I knew sooner or later I had to be right! ;-)
Hey! Another win at home. Good way to start off the series. What a rough game too, I didn't see the O'Neil hit, was it as nasty as it sounds? And what the hell? Gino Odjick gets himself penalized after the second goal? Didn't seem the brightest move to me. Donald Audette made more sense by elbowing Cole after the game was all said and done.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This a deal with upside for both - Morris will have a chance to play with and develop alongside Rob Blake and Drury gets to play with Iginla (who must be the happiest man in Calgary right about now)
