The thing that really worries me about this is that, according to an eye witness reported on Sky News, two police officers held him down while a third shot him seven times in the head and once in the shoulder.

I appreciate the tactics (i.e.: a suicide bomber with a bullet in his leg can still detonate, and that a shot to the torso may detonate any explosives), but find it difficult to comprehend that three of London's finest couldn't stop one guy from reaching into his jacket when he was on the floor and two of them were virtually lying on top of him (paraphrased from aforementioned eye witness report).

Well, it does. I saw a Traffic Accident back when I was an MP where the guy was decapitated and his head was rolling around out in the street when we pullued up.

But if the guy was a bomber - and I think you have to agree that

1. Wearing a heavy, bulky coat in the summer
2. Running from the cops, uniformed or not, in a crowded city center
3. Jumping a subway turnstyle and going onto a train one day after a bombing attempt

made him a likely suspect, even if was innocent - that his performing his act of homicide bombing on the train they were on would have stuck in their heads a lot longer - those that still had them on intact, that is.

UPDATE:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1537457,00.html#followup

The man was NOT wearing a bulky jacket, the kind which could have conceivably be hiding a bomb. He did NOT jump the ticket barrier.

His cousin: "He used a travel card," she said. "He had no bulky jacket, he was wearing a jeans jacket. But even if he was wearing a bulky jacket that wouldn't be an excuse to kill him."

One of the armed police officers has been given leave, while two others have been moved to non-firearm duties.

If they take knives away, people will stab with pens and screwdrivers or swing hammers and golf clubs. Anything can be used as a weapon. If a person is crazy enough to pull a knife on someone they know well(as you mentioned domestic violence)
