but where does UPN get off effectively writing off a character that suddenly is deemed too controversial?

Well, they *do* pay the WWE to air SD, so if they don't want to deal w/ any potential controversies, that's their right.

How about Muhammad Bob?

Actually, no one is using Chavo Guerrero Jr. right now.

It's time for Vince to flip the bird to UPN as far as Hassan is concerned. Taking him off for a few weeks considering the events in London is fine, but dictating how Vince runs his company is something that UPN doesn't have the right to do, TV provider or not.

If I'm Vince, I put Hassan over Sunday, plaster him all over UPN (and specifically have him make reference to UPN) in defiance in the buildup to Summerslam, and start talking with USA about picking Smackdown up for Thursdays. It isn't though UPN hasn't already shoved Vince halfway out the door already with the move to the Death Zone next month, and nothing USA runs now on Thursday is gonna get better ratings than Smackdown will.

Oh, and also to say that apparently Muhammad Hassan makes some damned good points about the way society perceives his character.

Indeed.

It's good to see that the WWE isn't backing away from Batista or Cena. There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. The longer Triple H stays away is also a plus...

Regarding the 1wrestling.com story about UPN wanting Muhammad Hassan permanently off Smackdown, we've been able to confirm that is the case. I would presume he would have to go back to Raw and complain about unfair persecution (as opposed to corporate unbelievably bad foresight/borderline outright stupidity, I guess). Who knows if Spike will or won't care. It probably depends more on if the New York Times and other New York media follows up. I would presume the scheduled Batista vs. Hassan Smackdown title match plans for SummerSlam would be in grave danger, and they'll have to at least consider re-booking finishes for one, and perhaps two matches for Sunday.

UPN isn't dictating how Vince runs WWE, they're dictating what WWE can air on UPN. WWE can run house shows with live sex acts and disembowelings for all UPN cares, but WWE has no reasonable expectation that UPN is obligated to put it on TV. WWE has never and will never have absolute creative freedom and a TV deal at the same time, unless Vince buys his own cable channel.

And UPN will just edit it out of the broadcast. I could totally see Vince doing this, but it'd be utterly futile. It'd make far more sense to move Hassan to Raw and have him complain there, although I don't know that Spike is going to approve of tirades against its own sister network. WWE could save its anti-UPN tirades for when it gets to USA, but I'm not sure the message they want to send Bonnie Hammer is "We'll not only get you bad mainstream press, we'll run down your network when when you try to stop us."

Could this Hassan controversy just be something that provides cover for both Viacom and Vince while a form of a buyout takes place for the last year of WWF/E programming on the Viacom family of networks? Viacom gets to take the "moral highground" by taking Hassan off the air, and have the flexibility of an extra 2 hours of prime time to broadcast 4 additional crap sitcoms on UPN. Vince would be able to renegotiate his deal with USA/NBC to get SD a time slot on USA this fall rather than the Fall of '06. If Vince's stockholders question losing the broadcast network, Vince gets to use the "artistic expression" excuse.
This would provide rationale for why Vince decided to go "over the top" with Hassan when he went to the broadcast side of Viacom rather then when he was on the cable side of the Viacom family.

And too, it would really suck to have to send him back to RAW since he totally got punked out by Cena in his last RAW appearance.

I can see them doing a "Chaz" style shoot and have Mark Magnus & Shawn Daivari come out and run down the WWE and act as heels that think they've been mistreated by the company rather than pull the race card over and over again.

Dave Meltzer is reporting that WWE is now dropping the character completely:

We've had confirmation that WWE is planning on dropping the Muhammad Hassan character due to all the negative publicity, so he won't be moving to Raw.

Nothing to my knowledge has been said about the Daivari character, who at least earlier today, they wanted to keep.

I do hope that Davari is kept around in some form, as he's a talented guy. I really can't say I'll miss the Hassan character, though.

Muhammad Hassan should run in when Daivairi is challenging for the cruiserweight title and (power) bomb (Paul) London four times.

Then do another run in and do the same thing two weeks later.

WWE can have Hassan go for cheap xenophobic heat for the rest of his career, all the while saying "Don't get on our case, because he'll turn face any day now..."

You're exactly right. They did the same thing with Billy & Chuck at the time of the "marriage." "Sometime in the future, we are sure that Billy & Chuck will turn face, and be very popular."

Yeah, sure.

My friend works the complaints desk at the ACC and they were running RAW earlier this year. Hassan gave some promo or something and he had an UNBELIEVABLE amount of people coming up to his desk complaining about the character, and not in a "This is offensive to Arabs" kind of way, but a "I hate those people, let's kill them" kind of way. The sad thing is, he said about 1 in every 4 persons use the term "sand nigger" or something to that effect. One older gentlemen ranted on about how he 'fought in a war for those niggers and if they want to complain, he'd deal with them'.

I'm sad to see Mark Magnus is seemingly screwed from this, but I'm glad to see the character go. It played in to the wrong kind of heat (I mean, they could have Doug Basham dress in a white sheet and hood, come out with a burning cross, called himself Karl Kevin Kelly and get unbelievable heat) and to be honest, it showed a pretty bad side to some of the fans. Also, Magnus is a pretty bad wrestler. Let him go down to OWV, get some seasoning, then come back and hopefully he can get over on his own without the fear of someone taking him out. He's got the mic skills, at least.

By the way, Storm's gimmick includes 1.) telling the audience to shut up, and 2.) occasionally making everyone stand for the Canadian national anthem. You know they don't know what to do with a wrestler when he's making fans stand for a national anthem. It's like waving a white flag and saying, "This guy has no personality -- we give up."

Exactly what the morons who "agree" with Hassan's character fails to understand is that the character itself is inciting and provoking negative feelings toward Arabs, Muslims, and Arab Americans and THAT is why I think its wrong.

Well if you are sad for Magnus, the only ones to blame for it are the bookers of WWE.

So what happens to Mark Magnus? Does he get a new gimmick? It's hard to imagine anyone accepting him as an entirely new character, and even harder to picture WWE putting any effort into repackaging him.

I really hope this story doesn't end with a guy getting fired for doing a really good job following really stupid orders.

Eh. So, now UPN is censoring us on what is right and wrong? Didn't realize UPN was of such high moral fabric. Eh. What gets me though, is this.

How many of you are Soprano fans? Did you know, that the mafia actually exsists as well? Yup, sure does. Guess we'll have to take that off, as it may offend....

There's a damn on/off button on your tv. There's even a channel up/channell down button on your tv. Some tv's have remotes, so you can switch the channel right from your lazy-boy.

All this hubbub, it's amazing. I didn't even know anyone watched Smackdown still!
