My wife read me this story after it came across the wire, and I had to admit that I was always surprised every time I learned he was still alive...and I was a little sad that I wasn't going to get surprised by that fact any more.

Damn. RIP, Scotty.

This was one of those..."Aw, no..." moments for me too.
I liked Doohan because: * He actively called Shatner on his camera hogging. * He ALWAYS had trophy wives...(didn't he just have another child a few years ago?)
85 is a long life, although I know the last few years were plagued with Alzheimers. Hopefully it didn't get as bad as some of the cases you hear about.

I wouldn't call a woman you had spent 28 years with a trophy wife.
On occasion James Doohan would make public appearances around the Puget Sound. Once the Mariner's hosted a "turn forward the clock" futuristic baseball game (complete with god awful futuristic jerseys) and Jimmy threw out the first pitch.

According to the Director's Edition DVD of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), the Klingon language first introduced in that movie and later featured in many later Trek movies and TV episodes was initially devised by Doohan.

Oh, man! This is sad news indeed. You'll be missed, Scotty... but your spirit will always live on in each episode and movie of Star Trek, not to mention the hundreds of novels.

Very sad day. As a lifelong Trekkie until Voyager/Enterprise/Insurrection, Doohan remained one of people I had hoped to meet in my life at some point. He will be missed terribly. I'll be having a Trek movie marathon tomorrow night in his memory.
We're the middle children of history...no purpose or place. We have no Great War, no Great Depression. Our great war, our defining crucible, is a spiritual war.
