According to Meltzer, Earl Hebner, the most famous referee in WWE, was fired earlier today for selling merchandise without authorization. I certainly didn't see this one coming.

The answer to WWE's financial problems...

Figure Mike Choida becomes head ref of RAW, as he was before he got traded over - which was due to issues with Brian Hebner, if I recall correctly. Unless he's involved, I'm sure Brian is unaffected, past troubles or not. Chris Kay gets to be a full time guy, probably on the RAW side, and everyone's happy they got used to him and him used to them before this happened.

So you end up with

RAW
Choida
Jack Doan *
Chad Patten
Chris Kay

SD!
Nick Patrick
Brian Hebner
Jim Korderas
Charles Robinson

I have a disability: I can not keep Doan and Patten seperate in my mind. Since neither has been treated as 'senior' ref before, maybe they move Korderas over and put Kay on SD!? Horrible RAW bias indeed!

What "issues" did Choida have with Brian Hebner?

Doan has been there longer than Patton - I can remember Doan because he was a ring attendant right up until....WM9, I want to say. Razor Ramon would always say to him "something happen to this gold, something going to happen to you" - and then I think Tony Chimel was stuck with the job until HE became the regular ring announcer. This has been another episode of "Pointless Nostalgia with CRZ"

OUT: E. Hebner, Sparks, White
IN: Kay? (ovwrestling.com)

I agree with your depth chart above - Korderas HAS been there longer than B. Hebner, but it does seem like they've been higher on him for a few years now...to the point that even Robinson seems at least equal to Korderas.

It's C-h-i-o-d-a, by the way. (Keep in mind that I feel for Meltzer's "Ciota" trap for YEARS.)

Earl used to have a store here in town that sold memorabilia. It was called something like Earl Hebner's Wrestling Memorabilia and Patio Furniture. No really, it was. Maybe ~Dean or some other Richmonder might be able to help me out here. Anyway, the point is, Earl selling merch isn't wrong unless somehow they are just now finding out or the stuff was stolen.

So wait, was Tim White the ref who got hurt (I think his shoulder) in that cage match and couldn't work for a short time period?

I was wondering what he has done exactly. What you say gives me a somewhat more logical idea of what happened.
I would assume he sold memorabilia without permission.

I imagined him selling outdated wrestler shirts from the back of his car at an arena parking lot

Very stupid of Earl if this alone is the reason for his firing. He received a hefty salary..

Somewhere Bret Hart is smiling.

Seriously though, it had to be either counterfiet merch or stolen I would think. Either that, or selling it as an unauthorized, non licensed kind of way. Either way, so long Earl, I hope somebody else can flop and take a bump and lay down as long as you.

Being there since 88. wouldnt that make him the longest on screen employee they had?

Does anybody remember Howard Finkle anymore?

Sadly, the last thing I'll remember him during his run will be that he was low-blowed by a no-name diva.

Does this mean we see Hebner come in and pull a massive screwjob on somebody in TNA?

First thought that came to me when hearing he was let go was "I hope TNA picks him up." But then I thought, why? Yes he was a staple in WWE for years but I really don't see a need for TNA to try to get him. Plus, he has been doing this for what, just under 20 years? I can see him hanging his striped shirt up for good.

When was the last time Finkle was on RAW or Smackdown? I dont recall him being there in a very long time.

Hopefully Earl will go to TNA and reprise the original Fozny role from ECW. A by the book ref who'd DQ you for using a closed fist. THAT would rule. Okay, maybe not. I cant really see him being worth THAT much to anybody. Hopefully he made a LOT of money off his merchendise sales.

This is great news for TNA -- they could steal WWE's biggest money angle ever: Bret Hart vs. Earl Hebner.

Didn't Tim White's elbow/shoulder/whatever keep popping out every time he slapped the mat hard. IIRC, he had a match at WMXX as a swansong.

I'm shocked and appalled that no one's made the obvious "Earl screwed Earl" joke, at least until I just did.

I'm sure Doan was let go from the company for a good while not too long ago. Only reason I remember is he was one of my favourite refs at the time and I was pissed when I heard he'd been released. Thankfully he came back a year or two later.

Not bothered whatsoever about Hebner. He's been one of the worst refs in the whole company for the last 5 years. Only guy I can think of who was significantly worse was Teddy Long. Robinson, Chioda and Korderas are all much better.

Doan took some time off because he wanted to be closer to his family, but he "missed the rush" and went back to the WWF. He's also responsible for bringing Chad Patton in as a ref.

White destroyed his shoulder during a HitC match. (I'm thinking HHH-v-Jericho?), upon his comeback, it was just too fragile.
I would assume he now stays at home and runs his bar.
