Is it me or has there been an increase in the WWE bringing back wrestlers from the 80s , either in cameos ( Jake the Snake) or in matches ( Marty Janetty )

Is it linked to the WWE recognising the interest generated by the appearance of the 80s stars at WM 21, and how not only the fans in the arenas accepted it but also the IWC.
I do feel the WWE recognises the power of the net and have addressed some issues raised on the net. The Hardy angle being one.

I also give myself a small pat on the back for posing the question last year about : what responsibility does the WWE have towards those wrestlers who have fallen on hard times eg Jake the Snake. It seems ( possibly entirely coincidental) that once that question was discussed we had some of the older wrestlers make cameos. Roddy Piper to Marty Janetty. Whether this was a byproduct of the question or a consequence of the WWE feeling the vibe from the WM 21 inductions and how well they were recieved, we will never know ...

But gee I must admit I feel like a little schoolboy when I see Jake the Snake standing in a ring or Marty Janetty in tassels

I like bringing in the older guys for a few hurrahs, but not when those guys start to develop patterns.

For instance, when Sarge walks out, he ain't winning. When Snuka strolls out, he's gonna get beat up.

I attribute much of the attention given to appearances by former superstars to the WWE realizing the value of its library - the best of DVDs have generally done well, and have been a good way to generate revenue from a previously dormant asset.

The Hall of Fame announcements are just another way to sell their product.

Also, Randy Orton's legend-killer gimmick has provided a built-in storyline reason for these appearances.

I don't mind them, and generally enjoy them if they are kept to a reasonable amount of airtime.

Heck, I'll still pop for Sgt. Slaughter digging up his Cobra Clutch, and the "maggot" line even though the whole world knew he was out their put the MasterLock over. If done right, it'll advance a storyline, someone younger benefits, and most importantly the crowd is entertained.

This is why I have a problem with Hogan - during his last run he was giving the rub to one-legged Zach - blatantly a waste of time. This time, he's rubbing with HBK who is already at the top of his game, and who doesn't need the push.

I fear the absence of HHH of late spells a run-in from him disrupting the current Hogan run, together HHH-HBK retire Hogan, but the oneupmanship will kick off another tired round of HHH/HBK.

I'd rather they acknowledge Hogan was a former (not too long ago) tag champ with Edge, who is struggling to be seen as a serious contender. Hogan laying down for an upper mid carder like Edge has the potential to really establish Edge, and would honor the tradition of the business. And before anyone calls me on it, I do acknowledge that Hogan did a lot to help solidify Brock, but Lesnar is gone now.

While on the subjet, why did TNA stop doing this? For a short time old school guys kept showing up at events for that has seemed to stop.

Because nobody cares? Actually, I'm sure lots of people do care, but the solution to TNA's problems isn't paying old wrestlers to appear on their shows, especially since those guys had no history in TNA and TNA has no footage to show many newer fans why they should care about these guys.

As far as WWE bringing back a lot of older guys, they're signing lots of old guys to "contracts" so that WWE can work with them on DVD projects and the new 24/7 channel. Plus, as long as the guys that are returning don't settle in for a long run as headliners, people will generally gobble up appearances by legends.

I think it is a larger trend in our culture as a whole.

Pop Culture nostalgia is everywhere. Every channel has a list show where they countdown the greatest of EVERYTHING. Sports shows do this, music shows, tv shows, everything.

I think that it may have something to do with the disillusionment of the post 9/11 world(including the stock market minicrash, corporate scandals etc). I grant you that some of this existed before, but it is off the charts. We are obsessed with what used to be, the good old times.

All of these superhero movies are part of the same phenomenon.

Now I know I'm gonna get flamed, but I think there is something there. Go easy on me.

I actually think you have a point there.
Nostalgia IS everywhere.
I find myself watching things like ESPN Classic and "I Love the 80's" more often than current shows. It seems like every TV show that lasted any amount of time is being released on DVD. "Punky Brewster" Season 1. "Dukes of Hazzard" Season 1, even "Wrestling Stars of the 80's" .
There is a "Fat Albert" movie, a "Garfield" movie, etc.

I don't know if this would have happened with or without September 11th, but the good ol' days do look better somedays.

For years people have been crying out to Vince especially to reach out and acknowledge the past. Now that he owns it all he is finally doing it, but it's not to little to late and it's not yet overkill. I'm sure it doesn't matter to the younger fan what older star they trot out, but I'm actually likely to pick up a retro DVD released by the WWE instead of not even looking at the latest PPV DVD. So, he is reaching into my pocket where he never has before, and I'm letting him. Win/win.

Now it could get tiresome. You can't do it every week. I'm tired of certain guys like Hogan who really never did it for me anyway or Road Warrior Animal who pops up everywhere Johnny Ace is, but I'll tolerate it if it isn't at the top of the card all the time.

Now if you asked me if the pointless stripper T&A was getting old I might have a different answer.

Personally, I think it's great that they've started this whole "WWE Legends" brand. They can have Hogan or Piper or Animal or whomever show up on any given night, without having to worry about them showing up anywhere else because (a) they're all under some sort of contract and (b) there's not really anywhere else they could go.

I don't think they should be a major part of every show, but as far as a cheap nostalgia pop, I don't think there's any harm in that. And I'm willing to bet that the "Greatest Stars of the 80's" DVD will eventually show that there's enough of the audience out there that still wants to see more of these guys. Not necessarily in competitive matches, but cutting promos, interacting with current stars, that kind of thing.

Where is the steven richards of the 80s!? Where is Koko B Ware?!

I hope he's not dead, then I'll just look dumb.

Koko never won a match that I remember (Misc no-name jobbers don't count), but was still booked as a star. I loved the guy. It's like he lost for my entertainment. I want him back. I want him back and mentoring Steven Richards or Val Venis or Tajiri. Can't you just see him backstage with the parrot on his shoulder (long dead, now stuffed and inanimate, yet Koko still talks to him), giving the benefit of his wisdom to the new jobbers-to-the-stars: "So, here's how you make the other guy look good, without making yourself look like a complete and total putz".

Frankie died in a house fire a few years ago, so stuffing him wouldn't be a pretty sight

(Faaaaaaat) Koko regularly appears on Memphis TV by the way. It used to be available for download from Lawler's site but I'm not sure if it still is.

It's a cheap easy way of furthering storylines. What's wrong with it? Yes none of these guys needs to be around all the time, but for a few weeks and the odd match it's a bit of fun.

God bless the men of 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard...good luck, and come home soon.

Or...it could just be Vince riding the whole "throwback" trend that's dominating fashion, music, auto design, etc.

We Gen X-ers are having our midlife crisis about 15-20 years too early...and there's money to be made off it.

I think it's a lot more basic than any of this gen-x stuff or VH1's "Remembering the 80's" type shows.

I think it's just a sign of exactly how good a job the WWE's creative has been in the last 5 years. They are supposed to be creating new stars that we care about, and it turns out they can't even come close to the type of characters that these guy's used to come up with on their own 15 years ago.

I couldn't care less about Heidenreich because a retarded half-wrestler killing time each week while the company waits for "the next Austin" to fall into their laps will never create as many great memories as the LOD have. Even after 5 years and even knowing Hawk is gone, they're still more over than anyone else in that segment (maybe minus Melina's entrance).

The 80's and 90's are when wrestling really exploded- when Wrestlers gained Superstardom at large. Being as we are in the era adjacent to that "boom", we still remember those great stars that entertained us and took wrestling to a whole nother' level of entertainment, so we get excited when they pop up again, though theyre old or not in shape to be in the ring anymore- Its like seeing an old friend.

For example- and I dont care who hates me because of this- when I was a little kid; Hulk Hogan was my hero, and everytime he comes out its the same feeling as if I was watching wrestling with my grandpa way back when, despite that now I can see Hogan's not a "good wrestler"- It always brings a smile to my face. Nostalgia has always been very powerful and its finally being marketed.

Happy to see an Oklahoma City RAW that didn't result in JR getting humiliated. I really enjoyed the finish with no commentarty, Sean and Eric apoplectic, and the live band playing the show out. Nice to see a happy ending once in awhile.
