Simpsons-Family Guy feud escalates (cnn.com)

There's a Simpsons-Family Guy feud?! When did this start happening?

I didn't really read anything about a fued.

1. The Simpsons may have taken a shot at Family Guy in a recent episode.
2. Family Guy creator says "we definitely give it out, so we can take it."
3. Family Guy creator says Simpsons were an influence.
4. Says it's all but impossible to be consistent for 16 seasons.
5. ....annnnnd, that's all.

If there IS a fued between the two shows, that article did nothing to shed light on it. How exactly is "escalates" needed in the headline?

I figured the feud would've started before the Homer-Peter clone episode.....I remember when Homer donated to PBS, and Betty White said, "...if you don't want crude, lowbrow programming disappearing from the airwaves...." then she shuts off a TV with the "Family Guy" logo on it.

As it stands, it doesn't sound like much of a feud to me.

There was some stuff on various Simpsons DVD commentaries that led me to believe that the people on the Simpsons aren't too fond of Family Guy. It was mainly little comments about how they did certain things in the early 90's (like quick cutaways to something not really related to the plot) that Family Guy is imitating today. They mentioned a few times, chuckled to themselves about it, and then moved on without making a big deal about it.

I'd say it's like an East Coast-West Coast thing, except we really can't be sure on which coast Springfield's on, if at all.

Although I know people who THINK they know...

I remember on one of the audio commentaries, one of the producers made some cracks about people trying to figure out which state Springfield's in. The comments went along the lines of, "It's just north of Mexico [in reference to Krusty taking the Camp Krusty kids to Tijuana], near Hollywood, a drive from Vegas, a drive from mountains, and it's on a coast. Come on, what state do you think it's in?" I think he meant his comments to reflect the writers' perspective, though. They live in southern California, and so over the years, Springfield's taken on a lot of southern Californian characteristics. Even with all those jokes about Utica, NY.

I'd rather they just set fire to the Simpsons and put out new episodes of Futurama.

And air them on Cartoon Network. Fuck Fox.

During the Q&A session of the "Family Guy Live" show back in April, Seth MacFarlane attributed some of the hatred from "The Simpsons" towards "Family Guy" to the fact that several animators from "The Simpsons" wanted to jump ship to MacFarlane back in the day.

I got tired of the Simpsons a long time ago. When Family Guy got shit-canned, I was annoyed that Fox wouldn't stop sucking the dry teat of the Simpsons. The show has run its course, its time to move on, you know? I'm like, Futurama and Family Guy were the new fresh and great animated shows, but Fox would NOT get behind them, never give them a consistent timeslot, etc.

Cartoon Network was the channel that did this, not Fox.

As much credit as we give to Cartoon Network, we also have to give credit where it's due for the fans of the series, whose cult-like dedication is what really brought this back (going out of there way to watch at 11:00pm or 11:30pm on a weekday and gobble up the DVD sales like candy).

As for the feud, this is old old news (going back to Family Guy's initial run). I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed in length before. Maybe it was and I missed it, but I just did a search and didn't find anything on it. I'd say it'd be telling of the downward slope of "The Simpsons" in recent years when its writers have to resort to potshots like that, although I'm sure much of it is done in jest and the writers don't sit around the table bitching about "Family Guy" being a rip-off.

ON A SIDENOTE - Cartoon Network made news when they aired "Wish Upon a Weinstein," which Fox refused to air. I've been noticing lately, however, that when they re-air the new episodes on the Adult Swim lineup some stuff is edited. Pretty odd...maybe CN's Standards & Practices feel more comfortable in saying "this has to be modified" knowing that people will watch anyway.

I've never noticed anything edited on the [as] airings, but rather stuff has been unedited - like the Henry brothers' "Kicked in the Nuts" bit from the end of "The Cleveland-Loretta Quagmire."

My biggest issue with [as] censorship has been on Futurama, where each version of Prof. Farnsworth's "Sweet Zombie Jesus!" (the single greatest expression in the history of ever) has dropped audio. It happened two days in a row several weeks ago and my television almost had a speaker thrown at it.

As much as I love Family Guy, if there were a real feud here there wouldn't be much of one. Our Favorite Family could just whip out "Marge vs. the Monorail" and "Last Exit to Springfield" and all the Chicken Man fights in the world couldn't stop it from being OVER.

In my opinion, there's more good-to-great episodes of The Simpsons than there are good episodes of Family Guy. There's also a lot more bad episodes.

The Simpsons #1 strength is DEPTH. They have a lot of pretty well-defined characters to anchor episodes around. The problem is that most of the all-star writers left between Seasons 6 & 12, leaving a bunch of 2nd generation Simpsons writers who aren't using the characters properly.

Take this for what it's worth, and I didn't say this in the first place because there's no real PROOF that isn't circumstantial, but supposedly Springfield was based on Springfield, Oregon (Groenig's home state) and Eugene is supposedly "Shelbyville".

I've been there, and there is the hillcrests and there is the statue that looks suspiciously like Jebbediah Springfield and an energy plant over everything. And the storefronts on the main drag look similar...but like I said, I have nothing concrete to go on here except the claim of a friend of mine.

That may have far less to do with censorship than with just general syndication practices. Most syndicated shows have about 30 extra seconds cut out, in order to sell space for one more ad. Sometimes one whole 30-second chunk of the episode is cut out, whereas other times, little one-liners or asides are snipped away, adding up to 30 seconds.

This is really noticeable if you've grown up watching The Simpsons' early episodes in syndication and then watch them on the DVD. Since the early 1990s, the major networks have cut roughly a full minute of showtime out of half-hour shows to make room for more ads. Then take another 30 seconds when you hit syndication. The upshot is that for those people who've only seen "Marge vs. The Monorail" in syndication, there's 90 seconds of never-seen-by-them material on the DVD. Anyway, this is how little "missing clips" were explained to me by Simpsons audio commentaries and a friend who's a nut for TV trivia.

I've heard a few times that the Simpsons' geography and layout is based on Matt Groening's hometown in Oregon (for instance I believe that he grew up on Evergreen Terrace).

Of course, within the continuity of the show, they've thrown out so many contradictory clues as to what state it's actually is that there's no actual location for it. The one time they showed something definative about the state was an address that said "Springfield, NT". That would be the fictional state of "North Tacoma".

Quit watching remakes. James Caan's THIEF wants it's everything back. Ryan Gosling isn't right for these types of films. Ben Foster would have been so much better.
