to think that nevin was considered a bust when the astros got rid of him and now is/was one of the best power hitting 3rd basemen in baseball
Marge: Mr. Scorpio, this house is almost too good for us. I keep expecting to get the bums rush. Scorpio: We don't have bums in our town, Marge, and if we did, they wouldn't rush, they'd be allowed to go at their own pace.
I have to agree. I gambled on taking him for my fantasy team (pujols was gone) and it's paying off big time. He's putting up fantastic numbers and the fact that the padres have that kind of record at home is amazing. Think they can keep it up all year?
I am the JOBBER TO THE STARS. You better remember that.

Actualy, he's playing 1B this year. But he was horrible everywhere (Det, Hou, Angels) before he went to San Diego. I guess he finially got comfortable after he stopped catching. Because I can't figure out what else it could have been to turn him around.
They've pointed to the fact that when he found out that he was being considered for AAA by the Angels had they kept him, that it scared him and kicked in that extra gear. He didn't want to become a career minor league player, and I think he knew that the Padres were his last chance.
Considering he was the #1 overall pick by the Astros, I think he probably had an attitude problem up until that point. Thank God he got focused and became the player he was capable of being.
I love when a player strikes out, and they blame it on an earlier pitch in the sequence. Phil went a little nuts, but it was a pretty bad call. Not as bad as some of the ones on my man Ray Durham Monday, but that's a different story for a different time. Keep up the good fantasy work, Phil.

Yeah, it's a pity Bobby Cox isn't manager of the Pads. I swear, I can't watch a Braves game for more than 10 minutes without seeing Bobby, hat off, looking incredulously at the home plate umpire.
It's actually become something of a high point in any Braves game I happen to watch.
Heh, I love it when an ump tells Bobby if he does something, he'll get ejected. More likely than not, Bobby will go out of his way to do it.
My favorite was a game in Florida a few years ago. Bobby was screaming from the dugout. The ump told him if he took one more step up from the dugout, he'd be ejected. Bobby took two HUGE steps up the stairs and looked to the ump. He was tossed - which meant we got our traditional 3 minutes of Bobby gettin' all up in his area.

Which is ridiculous since Glavine & Maddux get practically another foot added to the strike zone on the outside corner.

Matthew: You would've loved it, David. A week in a foreign country, strange people, strange customs...
Dave: Oh, I know what you mean. I've been to Canada.
Well, Boche got tossed really quick. They never showed how far out he was, but apparently he hadn't even left the bench? I'm taking that from the announcers, as they didn't have a camera on him (but since they didn't, he probably hadn't moved yet).
The calls were pretty bad last night. The ump was calling strikes about 6 inches outside and 3 or 4 inches below the knee.
I'd have loved to have had the ESPN strike zone thing going for last nights game.
