Last night's show was kind of crappy. And not in a good way, either. When it's cheesy and campy, it works. Last night's show didn't work for me.

While I enjoyed Greg Kihn's music in the 80s, he has no business growling on my television now. Though it appears that his son has got some guitar chops.

Club Nouveau? Who the hell are Club Nouveau?

Glass Tiger sounded pretty damn good, but it seemed kind of weird with an older guy crooning "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone."

Billy Vera was absolutely wonderful. He sounded great and looked pretty damn good for 61.

And Thelma Houston? What the frig was she thinking with that dress? The woman is 62 years old!! Her back=up singers sounded pretty good and the string of going last gets you the win is reborn. No way she should have won this.

Billy Vera and then Glass Tiger. Both were better than Thelma.

Disagree if you must.

Club Nouveau had a string of hits in the late 80s and early 90s. I remember a time when theirs and Cameo's music dominated urabn radio airwaves. Much of their music has been sampled in Hip Hop (or I should say the same song keeps gettign sampled).

You really must get out of the NorthEastern nowhereville, PieMan. ;-)

I thought Club Nouveau only did that "Lean on Me" cover that couldn't carry Bill Withers's jock.

The show wasn't THAT bad. Greg Kihn didn' sound like Greg Kihn, but I still liked it. And yes, his son DOES have some nice chops. he did ok on the Green day song, if not just a tad behind the beat. but I still enjoyed it.
As for Club Nouveau, I was REALLY impressed with their cover of "Thank You". I really wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't released as a single in the next month or so.
Glass Tiger did a fantastic job on both songs, but then again they are still ont he road and still (kind of) have it.
When HostBoy Vern said the words "Bill Vera", I almost shut the tv off. I HATE that fucking song. And of course, they HAD to show a Family Ties pic (mmmmmmmm, Mallory), but you know what, I was very impressed. He a great job on both songs. "At This Moment" won't bother me so much now.
Before I go further, something about Vernon Kay's seudo-Connery-esque accent is starting to make me laugh. I kept hearing in my head: "You'll rue the day you crossed me, Trebek!"
Thelma Houston. Well then. I missed the start of her first song (doing laundry) and when I walked in and saw that gawdawful blue thing on, I literally jumped back and went GAHHHHHHHH!!!!! Then before her Keyes cover, when they showed her paying with her grandkids, all I could picture is her grandson saying "Grandma, your boobs are in my face!" She DID do a good job on the song, but I still think Nouveau should have won, with Glass Tiger VERY close behind them.
Oh, and pie, if you go to http://www.nbc.com/nbc//Hit_Me_Baby/index.shtml you'll see no mention of Night Ranger in next weeks finale. YOU LIE!!!!! The show looks pretty weak if they have to bring Juice Newton back out of the cobwebs to grind us with "Queen Of Hearts". Now if she did her version of "Headin' For A Heartache", I'd listen. She ROCKED on that cover. Animotion will be kind of cool to see again. Missing Persons, Eh. Shannon? OK. Best of all: "COMING SOON~!" makes another appearance!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, yeah, studio audience, fuck you. irene Cara my ass. HoJo.

Here is some info on Club Nouveau:

King was the creative force behind the hit "Rumours" by the Timex Social Club in 1986, and formed King Jay Records for Club Nouveau. They made some good disco-flavored and funk tunes, and had four consecutive hits in 1986 and 1987: "Jealousy," "Situation #9," a cover of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me," and "Why You Treat Me So Bad." The last two both reached the number-two spot on the R&B charts.

"Why You Treat Me So Bad" in particular has been sampled at LEAST 4 or 5 times that I know of--most notably by the Loonies with "I've got 5 on it" (an ode to a dime bag of weed) and J-Lo's remix featuring NaS "I'm Gonna Be Alright."

I heard the other day that they dropped out after the network couldn't get clearance for their cover song.

Seems this show got more popular than expected that they're actually scrambling to find more performers. Sadly, Debbie Gibson and Rick Springfield have turned down offers.

Thanks for backing me up, Grubby. Night Ranger would have been excellent and I would not lie to you, JimBob.

I still don't remember anything about Club Nouveau (and you don't have to play the age card here, people).

Juice Newton looks like SNL's Larraine Newman in that picture. Juice is still getting around, though. A couple year's back she was the main attraction at The Union Fair in Union, Maine, home of the Blueberry Festival.

Gimme Toto, Billy Ocean, Boston, Corey Hart, Bow Wow Wow, Double ("Captain of Her Heart", y'all), Johnny Hates Jazz, Rick Astley, Frank Stallone, Marc Cohn, Nelson and The Outfield.

Just for starters.

(Okay, I know the original drummer from Toto is dead. Did I miss anyone else?)

And Air Supply was in the first ad. Where're they?

It's only now that I'm really starting to miss Falco.

I agree with pieman, with the lineup they had last night, and what they've got lined up for next week, the show doesn't work. There are certain one-hit wonder/has-been types that you never forget, and then there are others who come, go, and are forgotten. Last night's group and next week's group are in the latter group. Yeah, I recognized the songs once I heard them, but the name recognition just wasn't there on its own (unlike acts like Cameo, Wang Chung, etc. where I could instantly put the name to a face/faces and KNOW what song they would sing)

Let's put it this way, if the show's run would have started with the lineups for this week and next week, the show would have never ran longer than the originally planned 3 episodes.

She of "Let the music play/you won't get away" fame.

I thank the dances at summer camp for that song getting forever etched into my head.

Animotion's lead singer is from Fresno, it turns out. They ran a thing in today's paper on her. Turns out I processed some pictures for her a couple of weeks ago at my Walgreens.
