Gas Prices Drive More Consumers to Steal

Some highlights...

The problem has caught the attention of about a dozen state legislatures, which are seeking to toughen up gasoline-theft penalties, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. But people who run filling stations, a notoriously low-margin business, say "drive-offs" aren't easing up.

"This is the worst year I've seen," said Linda Fulton, who has managed an E-Z Mart Inc. filling station in Wake Village, Texas, for the past nine years. "I am $111 short this week, and it's all from drive-offs. Normally, I wouldn't lose this much in a month."

New York is one of the six states seeking to suspend a drivers' licenses after the first offense. With the rise in fuel prices, gasoline theft "appears increasingly to be a semi-white collar crime," Brodsky said.

The convenience-store association agreed.

"It used to be kids doing it for the thrill of it, or to appear cool," spokesman Lenard said. "But now it's every demographic, every type of car."

"Pump and Jump"...an art form. It's hard to believe that it's been almost 18 years since I even seriously considered something like this. Before electronics and cameras, it was an honor system - pump your gas, walk inside and pay the bill. Fuck that. Own a hatchback, have an escape route (ah shit...this was before gridlock traffic) and have a trusted friend pumping the gas or driving. Fill up, ease on into the open hatchback and drive away. Before they knew what hit em...gone! And this was when gas was under a buck!

Every gas pump in Florida carries a warning these days -YOU WILL BE PROCECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW...complete with a mean picture of Officer Friendly holding what used to be your Driver's License. I wouldn't dare. Hell, after living up North for years ("Pay First or Else"), in addition to reaching an age (18) that is easily thrown in jail, I gave all that up.

Reading this in the paper today was great - Gas is actually worth stealing again and the Cops are confused. I can easily see some freak in an SUV barrleing down the highway, on the run, for his $50 in gas...I don't know whether to laugh or cry - there is a guy that wouldn't steal a beer from his neighbor, pulling a "pump and jump", amatuer style, because the price of gas is obscene

In two years this is liable to be an act of terrorism, but no way in the world would they place a backdated statute of limitations on this for procecution, right?*

* that means I know I ain't the only one that has done this

I've actually interned in a court house where someone was arraigned for this in the mid 90's, so I've realized that it's not worth the bullshit. Of course, if there wasn't 45 cents a gallon state and federal tax on gas, the price would be slightly lower.
And, as always, remember this: The more the price of gas goes up, the more the price of merchandise that is shipped rises. Thus, begin hoarding now while the prices are still relatively low.

Wow. I've been as far north as Philly, as far south as Charlotte, NC, and have never seen a pump-first station with the execption of a few towns in WV I've been to.

NONE of the stations I've been to in MD/DC/VA have been pump-first. They're all pay-first. If they weren't, the stations would be more than down $111 a week. Believe me.

There are pump-first stations all around in North Carolina. Just depends on what neighborhood you're in usually. Same down here in Alabama. I wonder if they'll start to phase out soon, however.

I havent seen a pump-first station here in the L.A. area since... early 90's maybe?

Actually, I remember going to one in 1995 once now that I think about it. I only had like $3, which bought me about 3 gallons at the time (can you imagine!??!), but I accidently let the pump get up to $3.45 or something, so I had to tear my car apart to find an extra $0.45. I think I ended up giving the guy 3 $1 bills & a bonch of nickels & pennies.

In Kentucky/Southern IN, there are plenty of pump first stations. Some of them specify you have to pre-pay after "dark," but I'm sure if you don't fit a certain decription (see the quotations to the left), you can get by without paying until you come into the store.

It will not surprise you that I don't believe I have ever been to a gas station in my part of Maine that is NOT pump first. You just get all the gas you need and then mosey on into the store to pay your tab. I haven't heard about any drive-offs lately either.

All of the self-serve stations here are pump first, as well. I've never done it, but the temptation to just drive off gets stronger every time the prices go up.

Ditto here in Canadia. I'd never heard of a "Pay-first" gas station until I read this thread. I'm not sure how cost-driven it is, either, as we're paying CAD$0.95/L or so right now, which works out to about USD$2.91/gal.

Maybe it's just dependant on how many times a company's been burned by Pump 'n Jump. And we're all soooo honest up here :)

It must be a regional thing. Here in WI you don't hear about pay first stations much. I know one that has that because their pumps are in a bad (not very visible) location, but that's about it.

We are all Full Serve here in NJ. I suppose there are people who say they are paying cash and then drive off but I haven't seen it in the papers. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen.....

In Columbia, we're also pretty much also all pump first until it gets dark, then it's pay first.

I know though I've pumped gas, gone in to buy a soda, and the cashier was just going to charge me for the soda, and had forgotten completely about the gas. I can see it being very easy to get away with not paying for gas if that's your mindset.

The bad thing is that mostly innocent folks are harmed by the gas drive offs.

The gas stations don't make much on gas sales. Some of the gas stations make the employees (who may be in the $6.00 to $7.00 per hour range here in the mid-west) responsible for drive-offs. They may dock pay, or even write-up (eventually even terminating) employees if there are too many drive offs when the work.

So mostly, it's the person making $7.00 an hour that has to eat the loss when some @$$ decides they're too good to pay for gas.

A note along the same vein:

If you run on your check at a resturaunt, it usually comes out of your server's pocket. Don't be a dick - pay your bill.

You know, that's a good point. But one that I totally ignored when stealing gas, due to the faceless nature of not having to look at the attendent in the eye, much less having to stare at a pregnant belly. Ripping off a restaurant is known as a "Chomp and Stomp", something I could never do in good conscience. It's a big difference to have a waitress wait on you hand and foot and then stiff her, knowing that there would be hell to pay (for her) based on a table full of young punks looking for adventure. I always though that to be beyond the limits of good taste and more of a "crime" than bogarting a tank full of gas
