Anyone catch this special on CBS? Pretty good stuff, hitting most of the really iconic lines, but not so much on the really funny ones. Nothing at all from Ghostbusters, Fletch, Blazing Saddles, This Is Spinal Tap or The Princess Bride. (Nothing from Monty Python either, but I gather that only American films were eligible.)
Some of the great lines that didn't make it were nominated, such as "These go up to eleven" and "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." (People voted for "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" over those? Please.) And the coolest thing about the list of nominees: they actually nominated Roddy Piper's "...I'm all out of bubblegum." from They Live. I would SO have marked out if it had made it, but I'm happy just to know it was considered.
I might have missed it, but I can't believe that "Luke...I am your father" wasn't on the list. The most important line in one of the most popular franchises in American movie history, and it's not as good as "I'm the King of the world!"? Please.
"He is the most overrated piece of crap in the league. He bitched and whined after he got his ass beaten in New England last year, so the NFL changed the rules. Then he got his ass beaten in New England again. Every year he's the top MVP candidate. Every year he's supposed to be the best. Every year he's going to carry the Colts to the Super Bowl. And every single year he goes to New England and gets his ass beaten. And his brother's a whiny little bitch." -A friend of mine, on Peyton Manning
I hadn't planned on watching the whole thing, but I'll be damned if I didn't get glued to the show & couldn't stop.
I'll agree that "Frankly ..." should have been #1, without question. But I didn't really think that Brando's quote from The Godfather should have been #2. I would have ranked "E.T. Phone Home" in the top three.

Which Brando quote was it?
"I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." That and "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer" were the only two quotes from the Godfather trilogy.

Watching the ad right before the show started, it looked like it was going to be pretty heavy with pop-culture (the Austin Powers 'Yeah Baby!'???!) They did a nice job of mixing up the old movie quotes with more current fare. There were a slew of quotes on there that I had heard before, or said before, but never knew where they had started. It was also surprising that they used some quotes over others from certain movies - the Force Quote over "Luke, I am your father," for instance. I would have switched the order of the Top 2 (#2 and #3) Brando quotes but that's just me - the list seemed fairly representative of the 80 years of American movies.
This list also taught me that I am spawned from the only two people on the face of this planet who never, ever, ever saw Caddyshack. So I got that goin' for me, which is nice...
(edited by StegDutchie on 22.6.05 2044) "You rock, Rolfski. You are one hep cat." "Ya, ya, sock it to me."
This is the point in our program where I have to nitpick that the line is actually, "No, I am your father." But anyway.
I thought something from Casablanca would be #1, but the Gone with the Wind line was a better choice. More love needed to be given to The Godfather films.

This thread is kind of interesting in that it is a list thread about a list show. I'd take Brando in Guys and Dolls - I just dig the concept of him singing with Sinatra.
But I was bummed that "Flounder? Why Flounder? Why not?" wasn't in there.
Blazing Saddles is my personal pick for funniest movie ever made, but I can understand why a lot of the best quotes didn't make it. They either contain racial and ethnic slurs ("But we won't take the Irish!") or were presented in Authentic Frontier Gibberish. And I don't think farting could actually be considered a quotable line.
Of course, there's always "That's HEDLEY!"
"Never piss off a hawk with a blowgun" - Conan O'Brien
