ANYTHING to get him off of Monday Night Football. Maybe they'll wipe the slate clean & get rid of Al Michaels while they're at it.

Madden will be on MNF in 2005, he'll be going to SNF in 2006 when that will be the major game while MNF will go to ESPN and be where the Cardinals make their prime time appearance. And, this means 3 more Super Bowls for Madden, as he'll be on ABC's this year and NBC gets 2 Super Bowls in their deal. Also, listening to Ebersol being interviewed on WFAN this afternoon, if Michaels wants the play-by-play job, it's his, as long as he isn't insane in his contractual demands

The bigger question: What does this mean for the Madden Football video game franchise?

Can you touch a rainbow? Can you put the wind in your pocket? No! Such is Neifi!

Gameplay likely won't be affected. He'll be doing in-game commentary with whoever he partners with on TV. The franchise has been around long enough to go through the CBS-FOX transition and the FOX-ABC transition. If I recall correctly, the last time the network he worked for actually mattered in the games was ten years ago with the Fox graphics and theme music.

There was the Horse Trailer award in 2005 but I think thats about the only reference I can think of.

From EA, a couple months ago....

John Madden is under contract for the 2005-2006 season and we'll see where it goes from there," said Larry Probst, CEO of Electronic Arts. "But let's not forget that Madden is a part of the ESPN family with Monday Night Football. ... It's possible we'll continue working with John longer term."

Whether or not the positions changed since then I know not, but t'was last I heard.

I guess they could always buy the rights to use his name but use ESPN commentators from Madden 2007 on. I doubt they'd worry about losing too many sales because Madden ain't on commentary, but they might be more concerned about loss of name recognition.

I actually didn't mind Madden on MNF. He was kinda like a lovable, if slightly confused grandfather. I'll miss his ramblings.

I'd seriously doubt they would even attempt to buy Madden's name after the contract is up. EA is is the only choice for football gamers so sales won't be affected. If anything, NFL 2007 is more attractive. I'd love to see the Sunday Night Football crew (Patrick, Theismann, and Maguire) for nice change. Most people find Madden himself annoying in the game as it is. I don't mind his ramblings live, but it gets too repetitive to handle in the games. When he was with Summerall, Madden was actually a very nice needed change in tone. Even though I enjoyed Summerall, there's no denying his voice was extremely dull. Madden would ramble amusingly about nothing and sort of evened the commentary.

As for NBC, Costas and Madden? Sounds intriguing really. Michaels will hopefully find another color commentator that will click even better. Let's just hope with all these commentary changes, Dennis Miller's name doesn't pop up one of these days.

God bless the men of 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard...good luck, and come home soon.

The first time Ax McGuire and Joe "SNAAAAAAAAAP!" Theismann start bickering amongst themselves in the booth on ESPN Monday Night Football, I'll weep a little for poor Mike "I came back from illness for this!?" Patrick...and miss Madden.

Sunday nights...Madden...NBC...something just seems wrong there.
