Hey everyone. I figured I'd throw this out here and see what kind of a reaction it gets...I usually post this as a regular part of my LiveJournal, but thought "why the Hell not throw it out to the Ws." Figure it can at least spark some discussion.

Note - I make no pretenses about my reviews here and basically write them for myself. I in no way intend for them to be portrayed as gospel or the end-all be-all opinion on any given series.

DC

- Rann-Thanagar War #1: The fourth (and final) miniseries leading up to "Infinite Crisis." Again, I don't have a ton of interest in the space-faring aspect of the DCU, and this really didn't do anything to change my mind. It's alright, I guess, but my personal tastes prevent me from enjoying it all that much. Also, if you haven't read the Adam Strange miniseries and/or aren't very familiar with the background of Rann and Thanagar, prepare to be completely lost. Another nitpick: even though it's explained that Hawkman and Hawkwoman are familiar enough with the evil cult on Thanagar that's responsible for starting this war, I found it a little ridiculous that they had absolutely NO reservations about joining Adam Strange in his fight against their own people. I might continue picking it up, because considering its possible scope things could get real interesting, but I don't think (despite what a lot of others say) that this book is going to lead directly to whatever happens to spark "Infinite Crisis." Grade: B-
- JSA #73: "Black Vengeance" Part 1 of 3. Good as usual. Ties a LOT into "Day of Vengeance" and even answers a couple questions I had going into that series. Best team book out there, hands down. Grade: A
- Outsiders #23: "Lockdown". Arsenal locks the entire team within its headquarters after realizing that one of them is a plant for something pretty sinister. I continue to enjoy this book, despite the fact that I don't care much for other stuff Judd Winick's written. Grade: B
Wildstorm line
- Desolation Jones #1: "Made in England" Part 1 of 6. A new Warren Ellis series about a former British secret agent who had some experiments done on him that radically altered his physiological structure and, it's hinted at, perhaps some of his sanity as well. Great, great book, and left me wanting a whole lot more (and not for the lack of content in the issue itself). Grade: A+

Marvel

- Astonishing X-Men #10: The Danger Room has finally taken a physical form, and it's hellbent on destroying the X-Men. I've really enjoyed Whedon's run on this book, but this current story arc hasn't exactly set my world on fire. I really enjoy John Cassady's art...I'd even go so far to say that he's one of the handful of artists whom I take a great deal of interest in. Grade: B-
- District X #13: Marvel advertised this awhile ago as a stand-alone issue, and now it's a two-parter. Doesn't matter, as I still really enjoyed this issue. The vast majority of the issue focuses directly on a teen whose mutant powers have recently manifested, and as a result he's gotten himself into a bit of trouble. The only real complaint I have is the cover, which is awful. Poorly drawn, and the only thing relevant to the story is the kid's powers...even that aspect is a little screwed up, and Trevor Hairsine didn't even draw the right kid. That's a very minor complaint, though. Grade: B
- Fantastic Four #526: "Dream Fever" Part 2 of 2. People raved about the previous creative team on this book, and so far I'm incredibly disappointed with the new one. I realize that the book is supposed to be cheese, but the characters in this are so one-dimensional (especially the exchanges between The Thing and everyone else) it's irritating. Don't think I'll be picking up this title any further, unless Karl Kesel manages to make something really amazing happen. Grade: D+
- The Punisher #21: "Up is Down and Black is White" Part 3 of 6. Punisher, Punisher, Punisher! After two issues focusing on Nicky Cavella and his skull-pissing exploits, the Punisher finally goes absolutely apeshit over Cavella's defilement of his family's graves. Ennis writes great gritty stuff, and the Punisher's methods are fucked up enough to keep it continually interesting. Good story arc so far. People are worried that the MAX line is done because of Powers moving to Marvel Knights, but I'm pretty sure the book sells enough to warrant Marvel keeping the MAX label just to keep this book in its current state. Grade: A
- Punisher: The Cell: One-shot deal where Frank Castle turns himself in to seek revenge on the higher-up inmates detained in Riker's Island. Very good story, although I was confused as to whether or not it took place within the ongoing series' continuity. Grade: A-
- X-Men the End Book Two: Heroes & Martyrs #3: I am officially done with this book. Claremont writes like it's still '81, which is bad enough...unfortunately, ol' tubby doesn't have the chops he did back then to even warrant continuing with this series. Like I said, I think I kept picking up this series because I really REALLY wanted to give it a chance. I should just burn what I already have. Grade: F

NEXT WEEK
DC
- Teen Titans #24: Part 1 of a 4-part storyline crossing over into the Outsiders. I'm gonna do what I can to savor it, because I'm not buying this title in July or August. Screw you, Liefeld.
Marvel
- Daredevil #73: Great swansong for Bendis so far on this title, and I'm really looking forward to this and subsequent installments. Makes me really want to pick up the back issues, even though I've been warned he was a little uneven at times on the title.
- Hercules #2 (OF 5): First issue was surprisingly good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
- New X-Men #14: Last two issues haven't disappointed. "Year's End" Part 1 of 2, and should lead directly into the "New X-Men: Hellions" mini-series coming out in June. I'm contemplating picking it up.
- Spider-Man: Breakout #2 (OF 5): The shit's hitting the fan, and Spider-Man's gonna have to clean it up. Should be a fun issue.
- Young Avengers #4: KANG!
Not on Diamond's Distribution List for next week is Runaways #4 (currently my favorite Marvel series), although Marvel still has it up on the site for being released the 18th. Which means it's yet another classic Marvel delay. Terrific.

Well, FANTASTIC FOUR #527 (next month, natch) debuts the new creative team of J. Michael Straczynski [Amazing Spider-Man, Rising Stars, Supreme Power, Midnight Nation, Strange] and Mike McKeon [Teen Titans].

I skipped the Kesel issues. To be, NOTHING could match up to Waid & Wieringo's run...so I decided to give their run time to sink in.

I highly recommend picking up his whole run. It has been one of my consistently favorite comics for the past few years.

The uneveness is true, as it is a resule of some of Bendis' "decompression". Some issues a million cool things happen and in others not much at all. It pisses the reader off b/c you can't wait to find out. However read as a trade/back issues; I think they would read quite well.

Also Bendis leaves a lot of dangling plot lines through out his whole run which makes things a bit uneven.

Joe Quesada has hinted that House of M may resolve some of these, as will the rest of Bendis' Run.

Nice reviews btw, I love Runaways also. Newsarama has it for 5/25

Well, Decalogue runs for 3 more issues...and then it's Murdock Papers (the FINALE for Bendis & Maleev) ending in December.

And then apparantly Ed Brubaker & Michael Lark take over.

For shame. Whenever Karl writes an FF story, it should be an automatic purchase.

I still my favorite FF story of the last 5 years has been Karl's FF Annual where ben ends up in the parallel universe where the FF began in 1961.

Actually, I haven't yet. My books come every month or so from my old LCS.
